ALW has been praising Nicole since she performed Phantom in 2011. It's not news, I dont think he's misquoted. He’s been saying X (attractive) female lead in his new musical is the best talent in the world for his entire career. It’s called the ALW cycle; “Show is best version ever, how I always envisioned it. Cast is perfect, how I always intended, this version is definitive. X (female lead) is a/ is going to be a superstar (if talent show) and the future of musical theatre”. Then: the show flops/succeeds but eventually closes. And all goes quiet. His superstar new plaything is old hat and Lloyd Webber is bored. We usually never see or hear from them again with Lloyd Webber shows and they don’t become superstars. Then: show is revived. The walk back begins and the recriminations/criticisms of prior production(s) are brutal in the usual interview rounds as he promotes this brilliant new version, which is the REAL version he always planned… Oh and guess what? He’s found this incredible new talent who is going to be a superstar and is the best singer in the world, and plays the part how we always imagined… in his new revival which is how we always wanted the piece to be done Repeat for the last 40+ years. got it, thanks for the explanation!!

As someone who has seen a bunch of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals and not liked a single one of them, is this worth the treck to London to see? Will this be the one I like? I haven’t seen it, but if you didn’t like ANY if the ones you’ve seen before it seems pretty likely that you won’t like this either?

got it, thanks for the explanation!! Indeed. That was the wink ; ) ALW would never say 'one of the best' it's 't h e b e s t !'. Until.....not. In the case of NS though I think she flipped where the power lies when she turned down going to Broadway with 'Cats'. Despite his annoyance it turns out she not only did herself a favour, but a massive favour for ALW. As her Broadway debut THIS is the hit that she and he crave.

I only ask as the ones I’ve seen nobody else seemed to like either but Sunset Boulevard has rave reviews. I’ll probably enter the lottery rather than buy a full price ticket.

Great cast but the material was terrible.

Since I will be unable to get to London, can someone please tell me why Nicole and Tom are full of blood in the bows and why Tom is in bathing trunks? I know he is dead but the blood on both? If you do not want others to see please either message of use spoiler. Thanks.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I despise musical theatre in general and not a fan of ALW at all (I have seen a number of previous productions as a tag along with friends and family) but absolutely loved this. Not only because of the Jamie Lloyd effect but the score and singing were really engaging too. Well worth the trip if you can make it. I’ve already booked to see it again.

Thanks. she kills him, but it’s in darkness, apart from a quick flash of light every 10 seconds where he gets bloodier and bloodier. The last time the lights go down and up he is now gone and she has blood all over her hands, which she wipes all over herself in an “I’ve gone crazy” way

Advise: don't waste your money then. How was I meant to be know I wouldn’t like it I’m not psychic? Seems unnecessarily rude. Presumably max was answering your original question, which was whether you would like Sunset Boulevard!

If they were answering my original question then they should have replied to my original question no? Again, I’m not psychic, nor rude, just responding to an answer that came across nasty.

I think ALW is garbage, including this show - which I think is a bloated boring mess. However, Jamie Lloyd really does fix the show and it was one of the most thrilling theatre experiences I've ever had. If you don't like ALW, I'd suggest you might actually enjoy this production.

I'm confused. If you think ALW is "garbage" including this show how can you say you now like it? Surely it's still ALW in that the music has not been changed, it's just the direction of the show and what you are watching on the stage. If you had your eyes closed or were listening to a recording of it then its the same show. I'm not disputing what you are saying, just trying to understand.

Lol imagine going into a show with so much preconceived dislike, subconsciously finding things to hate over the 2 hours... but it's your money, and it'll be another seat filled- box office will like it at least!

Well, I've always loved the Norma songs - and Nicole's vocal and acting performance is stunning and among the best of all the Normas on record and including the one other Norma I've seen live (Glenn Close). I'm not saying I suddenly love all of the material now or I want to listen to the various cast recording on repeat, but I think you are discounting the importance of the direction. 'Just' direction? The show has been completely transformed - the style, tone, look, characters and character dynamics are completely different than any other production of Sunset before. Additionally, some material has been cut and changed that helps (i.e. Lady's Paying most obviously gone). So the actual experience watching the show is completely different, and does a good job at hiding the flaws of the show while bringing out its strengths. Or just taking it in a completely different direction where it needs to.

Nicole and Tom transferring with Sunset. Betty and Max unsure but unlikely. Shame about David Thaxton, his gorgeous voice soaring is a big highlight in the show for me.
