Shall we start a new tradition?
Interestingly, this time last year our Best Musical and Best Play revival hadn't been announced.
New Musical
I'm counting 9 eligible so far in this category - a busier year than last, with I'm sure more to be announced.
Confirmed: A Strange Loop, Ain't Too Proud, Great British Bake Off, Mrs Doubtfire, Next to Normal, Operation Mincemeat, The Secret Life of Bees, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Time Travellers Wife.
Rumoured: "The Witches" Musical at National Theatre
Musical Revival
Lots announced already:
Aspects of Love, Crazy For You, La Cage aux Folles, Once on this Island, La Cage aux Folles, 42nd Street, The Wizard of Oz, We Will Rock You
Best Play
Always a busy category but A Little Life, Brokeback Mountain, Dear England, Dr Semmelweis, Hamnet, The Motive and the Cue and Stranger Things: First Shadow all seem like they could be awards fodder.
Play Revival
Dancing at Lughnasa, Medea, Romeo & Juliet, Shirley Valentine, The Pillowman seem possible early contenders.
My very early predictions:
Best Musical - Next to Normal
Best Musical Revival - Crazy for You
Lead Musical Acting awards - Caissie Levy & Charlie Stemp,
Too early for Play categories for me, but I can see Stranger Things winning some technical awards. If I had to give a very early prediction I'd go with A Little Life.
What's missing that you think is in contention?
And what are your super early predictions?

I also think that there’s potential for the Donmar revival of Private Lives, which stars Stephen Mangan (a Tony nominee but has yet to have an Olivier), Rachel Stirling (a multiple Olivier nominee), and Laura Carmichael. It’s also directed by its AD, Michael Longhurst, who’ll also direct Next to Normal. He has a lot on his plate before he steps down next year.
When Winston Went to War with the Wireless seems good on paper too. It’s written by Jack Thorne, who has another new play this year, The Motive and the Cue at the NT.
The Wagatha Christie play could be up for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play. Their marketing is already winning with the banners at the Ambassadors.
As for the acting awards for dramas, hmmm…Sheridan vs. Sophie for Best Actress me thinks. As for Best Actor, we could have heavyweight contenders this year - the likes of James Norton, Mark Rylance, Ben Daniels, Steve Pemberton, Johnny Flynn, Joseph Fiennes, Stephen Mangan, etc. I’m sure we’ll have new blood and more POC contenders in the coming months.

they can apply for eligibility (in the same way as temporary venues do) for specific productions – so may decide to go for this given the clout of G&Ds and the long-term plans for it

RE musical categories. Probably over-optimistic but, as a big fan of Lynn Nottages' work, I am looking forward to the The Secret Life of Bees.
The original production ran in NYC just pre-covid. It's coming to the Almeida and, you imagine, will have been workshopped again post-NY - where it didn't do as well as some would have hoped. Not much wrong with the music though, reading reviews. General sentiment was the story needed tightening.
Fresh start. All to play for.

I wonder what is keeping Nick Hytner and the Bridge team from registering and paying the SOLT fees and be eligible members? They’ve done several acclaimed productions which would have gotten attention from SOLT voters.

For Best Entertainment or Comedy Play I'm predicting Idiots Assemble: Spitting Image The Musical (feel like this will fall under this category opposed to Best New Musical despite its title), Unbelievable, the Palladium Panto and maybe Vardy v Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial (if it doesn't fall under Best New Play).

Date and venue have been announced! Sunday, 14 April 2024, still at the Royal Albert Hall.
This season is so stacked especially in the plays category (Best Actor in a Play is going to be very competitive as well as Best New Play). Lots of musical revivals this year though my heart sank with the discussion that lots of shows are struggling (especially that Aspects of Love announced its very early closure, though nobody is surprised by that). I see many stars doing one-person plays these days, perhaps it needs a new category? Though I want to have Best Casting in a Play and Best Casting in a Musical as they are overdue.

Makes you wonder why bother.
Also, in response to posts above this - Sophie Okenedo won't even be nominated I wouldn't think, it was in the cross over of years and unless your show was produced by Sonia Freidman, you don't get noms for a show that long ago.
Would be surprise is Sheridan didn't get a BOM but again, she won't win.
Need to sit and start doing a proper list, but musicals does look like it could be properly exciting.

Hard to see past Caissie Levy for best actress, if she’s anything as good as she promises to be based on her recording of “I Miss the Mountains”. You’d think then that best musical would follow for Next to Normal.

Regarding box office, perhaps this was raised by others before, but should SOLT follow Broadway’s lead by releasing weekly box office returns of shows? At least in the core West End theatres (excluding the National, Almeida, etc.)? Then maybe another list for subsidised/nonprofits.

Having seen Guys and Dolls twice now, both immersive, and as a seasoned MT and theatre goer, it would likely win any gongs going. A staggeringly excellent night out. Definitely devalues any award.

And of course the general public watching the awards when they’re shown on ITV may very well be saying ‘what about that Guys & Dolls show I saw last year, that was great so why aren’t they getting mentioned/nominated/winning?’

Viewing figures for these awards have been on a steep downward decline, they are now about the same (600k) as "Later With Jools Holland" and I've never met anyone who watches that. |
