The hymn book in my primary school was Morning has Broken (orange cover with a yellow circle/sun IIRC) So it has stuck with me even though I have been a devout atheist for more than 35 years Come and praise was our song book. Morning has Broken was number 1 in the book

Didn't she say 'cuckoo' (one of the choices) couldn't be right 'cos it was a sound, not a bird If she lives near me she would have been correct. Morning chorus lead by the cuckoo whilst the blackbird is prolific at dusk. Guess we just assume everybody knows the hymn

I loved that boxer earlier who was so open about being unhappy with a silver medal. I think that was on of out biggest issues before probably London 2012 actually, where the attitude was for athletes and the public to think they had done a great job if they just got into a final or scraped a bronze. You have seen over the last several years the mentality change to athletes aiming to win and be the best in the world rather than seeming just to be happy to be there. That's not to say that if you get a silver or bronze or even just reach a final it's not a big achievement in many cases, but it's good to see a mentality where gold is the absolute aim. I saw that and thought 'well you should have tried bloody harder'. I know he was up against an amateur great but it was both shocking tactics and performance.

I love Michael Johnson, so I'm not complaining, but does anyone know why he commentates for the BBC and not an American broadcaster? I'd have assumed he'd be in high demand and have his pick of where to go, with the US ones offering more money, and presumably some other benefits of proximity to home. Perhaps he just likes spending time with Denise Lewis (I would too), but is there more to it that I've missed? Openly admits he was not that well liked in the team. Plus he is not that flamboyant so probably doesn't suit US tv. And is very outspoken against drug cheats And Ato Boldon has that gig tied up who is really popular. Any US of stateside views but I reckon those things come into it? But great to have him on BBC

Strange one to do the beam, unless it is just diary timings and the last event It's an easier one because it's all about balance rather than complex aerial twisting. On the BBC Beth Tweddle was saying that the most difficult part will be the dismount, but Simone Biles can simplify that if she feels she can't handle her normal dismount. Still a really hard bar no wider than your foot. Not much room for error

Rumour is that he would dance with Graziano... Oh please no, Graziano is a terrible dancer and choreographer. Sadly the rest of the current male pro line up aren't much better though, the new pro Kai is probably the best of the bunch. If it is not a silly question, how do we know the newbie is the best?

Loving the fact that in the men's high jump the two leaders were completely tied, so they decided that neither wanted to push the other into second place with a tie-breaker and they'd both have gold, thanks. Should have been told there is one medal so get out there and jump. Dina should have tried that at the start of the first round, see if there was any takers??

Timings must have been wrong. One of the things following le tour that has been slightly disappointing at the Olympics is the information given. Was that a contributing factor that surprised Boardman? That was a great ride by Roglic, thought commentary really underplayed this.

Cycling is wide open, if the race was to go one way a Belgian had a great chance. But you can't control the race with four riders. I had an attack as the likely winner outcome, with the course suggesting it may come at the last climb. Though didn't see Carapaz as that man at all. Yep shame for Jordan Chiles, don't think it would have made any difference but Russia had just shown a chink of an entry. Pressure of an Olympic final eh? Without your superstar. One of you is discussing the women’s cycling road race and the other the men’s. I’m afraid the comical mix-up in the women’s race where two of them celebrated winning gold when they crossed the line (a minute apart) plus the rather graceless comments of the GB rider in 11th place didn’t reflect well on the former. Who do you reckon for the men’s TT ? Hard to see past Ganna but the course isn’t ideal for him. As you say course not set up for him. Can I sit on the fence and say WVA or Roglic. Or Dumoulin as a bit more of an outsider

Biles is the best ever though, I don't think the adulation she gets is over the top. Generally love great athletes being great myself. It's not that Simone Biles isn't one of the greats and doesn't deserve all the praise she gets, but that everyone was treating the result as a foregone conclusion. I think this is the reason why I loved Sunday's cycling road race so much: before the race it was generally accepted that the gold would go to a Dutch rider and the silver and bronze would be a race between a few of the favourites, but then the entire race was dominated by three outsiders. I love a good underdog story, and even though two of those three ended up in the middle of the pack in the last few minutes it had the effect of spreading the attention round.
In the artistic team event it was a terrible shame for Simone Biles to have to pull out, but it also meant that Grace McCallum stepped up as the first USA gymnast in the next rotation and absolutely nailed her performance to shore up their confidence. If Biles had stayed in nobody would have cared about McCallum et al, but with Biles out any mistake from McCallum on the bars would have obliterated the team's confidence and probably ruined their chance of a medal. But they pulled together, and even with a serious penalty they ended up with a comfortable silver. That's a great story, and I think it's a far better story than the one we would have had: here's Simone Biles and here are the others whose job is to not screw up.

I was thrilled for the Russian Olympic Committee team, winning the gold in the team event for the first time as a country in their own right. I like the Russian artistic gymnasts; they've kept the tradition of routines that are beautiful to watch instead of being demonstrations of strength. They're the sort of gymnasts I grew up with. As for Simone Biles dropping out, I was unbothered. I've never been one for the sort of this-is-the-one-to-watch adulation that overshadows the rest of the event. Grace McCallum and Sunisa Lee turned in excellent performances that deserved recognition in their own right rather than the "and they turned up too" treatment that they seemed to be getting beforehand. Biles is the best ever though, I don't think the adulation she gets is over the top. Generally love great athletes being great myself. Had to go checking, the Russians have had Nellie Kim and Olga Korbut in the same team. That would have been a hell of a team to beat them. But you fooled me with Soviet Union/Russia split.

Japanese coverage isn’t it? BBC would be getting the same streams The television coverage is from the Olympic Broadcasting System. You can sometimes see the umbrellas/parasols they use to shield their camera operators from the sun. Each nation provides its own commentaries. At London 2012, there were so many things being shown that the the BBC didn't have their own commentary for everything. They could however put a few extra cameras for the broadcast. I remember they had an overhead camera for the rowing at Eaton Dorney. I'm a big fan of Matt Baker for the gymnastics and Aggers for the equestrian commentary

For me it's suffering because the BBC can only show limited footage and Eurosport isn't quite up to the job. So far I've watched a couple of things on Eurosport. The mountain biking was reasonably good but they had a poor balance between the commentary and the environmental sound so there were times when I struggled to understand what the commentators were saying underneath the sound of the helicopter. The artistic gymnastics was just a choice of unedited live feeds for each apparatus, with no commentary and loads of dead time. It might be better next time, once they have experience. But let's not forget that when Channel 4 won the contract to cover the Paralympics they did a fantastic job of it right out of the gate.
ETA: I'm watching another event now and it's better, so perhaps I just got unlucky for the first things I watched.

Can Japanese horses communicate with British horses? Certainly understand the native language so they can do their dressage moves when spoken to by the rider. Like Han Solo speaks English when Chewie talks to him? A rider is not permitted to speak to their horse when competing in dressage. Only physical aids may be used, not verbal ones. So a British rider ought to be able to control a horse from Japan & vice versa.
Not that they suddenly have to ride unknown horses, that only happens in the showjumping phase of the modern pentathalon. I'd recommend watching that for the amusement factor. I'll never forget watching it for the first time at London 2012. The mistakes were hysterical: one horse jumped out of the arena; one horse continued trying to jump a triple combination while the rider gradually slid underneath it, etc. I could only assume that some of the participants were considerably better at the other 4 sports, because I've seen considerably more competant riding at local shows. Good knowledge, knew I should have watched it before

On the official Olympics site they have biographies for all the athletes, including information about languages spoken. They also have biographies for all the horses, and I'm terribly disappointed that they didn't take the opportunity to put "Languages spoken: Horse" on every one. I would have. Can Japanese horses communicate with British horses? Certainly understand the native language so they can do their dressage moves when spoken to by the rider. Like Han Solo speaks English when Chewie talks to him?

Men’s roads race cycling - go G Men’s tennis - really want Djokovic to get a golden slam Women’s gymnastics - any event with Simone Biles Given Thomas, Geoghan Hart & Yates (S.) all crashed during the Tour de France, I can't help wondering if going for Yates (A.) as team leader might be the best bet. Still think it'll be Slovenia or Belgium though.
Ditto. He's got to be in with a pretty good shot.
In previous games I've watched the women's gymnastics but I'm probably not going to bother this time because Biles is clearly going to win everything.
Hits the deck more than Harry Kane does Thomas. Never known a cyclist crash as much

Rang my hairdresser and was relieved when they said they were still following all previous procedures. I'm going to mosey past mine and see what they're doing. The owner's getting on a bit — I believe he set up the business in the 60s — so I expect they'll be playing it safe.
In general I see this as a good guideline to which businesses deserve to keep my custom. If they're doing the absolute minimum required by law to keep customers safe where I can see them what are they likely to be like behind the scenes?
What a great phrase mosey is? Not heard this for ages. I’m going to use this several times today

Surely it's a statement of unequivocal fact, not an accusation? And that being the case, how can stating a fact be punishable? What a backwards system we have. I think the convention is to point out that what has been said is wrong, but stop short of calling it a lie. The idea being that MPs might be mistaken - in which case they're supposed to correct the record (which Johnson never does) - but are certainly too honourable to deliberately tell an untruth.
It's a convention that serves Boris Johnson particularly well.
Could you say, the prime minister has been sacked from two jobs, is he correct with this point? Anyway, if opposition could get organised this is a great attack on the government and pm. One or two a day call him out as a liar. Get suspended from the house for a day. Rinse and repeat

MPs aren't allowed to accuse each other of lying, presumably because it's redundant. Surely it's a statement of unequivocal fact, not an accusation? And that being the case, how can stating a fact be punishable? What a backwards system we have. Oy that’s British democracy you’re talking about. Sacked from at least two jobs for lying. You’d have thought you could say that

Interesting that BJ has done this to clubbers aka people who may not vote Tory. When compared to what to what football and tennis fans got away with last month. And just for the record I'm in favour of passport's and ID cards Intrigued me this post. Got me thinking. Not saying it’s wrong. It got me thinking at what seemed a strange dynamic. Football in the same bracket as tennis against the working class clubbers. With football long since the working mans game, I’m still not sure it was a majority of Tory’s at Wembley. Remember, go woke go through. More cheered the taking of the knee, eventually, than booed. And the Torys only get a majority in age groups 60+ crowd seemed younger than that. I know some right wing nutcases and the football lads alliance were involved in storming the stadium but all of that said I could not tell you if that tipped the majority to Tory supporters?? Don’t know anything about crowds at Wimbledon, though, come on Tim
