(Long joke time)
So there's this guy, lives out in the middle of nowhere in Alaska, mostly off the land. Prefers not to interact with people. But once a year in the summer he treks into town to buy stuff he can't make himself. One year he notices this guy with a wagon with a sign bearing the slogan "Problems Fixed", with a fair bit of traffic. He watches closely and sees that the products are all sorts of strange and varied knickknacks, ranging from tools to medicines. On even closer inspection he overhears that a lot of these are repeat customers. So, he gets in line and waits to talk to the wagonkeep. As he's nearing the head of the line he observes that the pattern of transaction goes as follows: The customer describes a problem they can't solve, and the merchant sells them a solution. When he gets to the head of the line he says to the merchant "Sometimes there's a bad winter or a dry summer, and I can't find anything to eat". The wagonkeep pokes around a bit and finds a little glass bottle and says "Drip one drop of this in front of your fireplace, and you'll get something to eat. Fifty dollars." He nearly comes unglued at the price, but he's got it, so he goes ahead and buys the bottle. That winter's bad. Real bad, and he can't find anything to shoot or trap, and no fish in the river, and no bark left he's willing to eat. So he decides "Better see what I paid for" and gets the glass bottle. He unstoppers it and lets a sticky green drop fall. And, where it fell, there's a weird looking fish with both eyes on the same side of its head. It doesn't look like anything he's ever caught, but he's hungry enough that it looks good to eat so he fries it up as best he can and eats it. It's pretty good. Next day, he's lucky enough to come across a hibernating bear, and he lives pretty well for a while. Summer's pretty dry. Gets dryer. Once the grasshoppers have got too well trained to the situation to catch, and every trap is empty, and the heat is setting off his powder, he heads inside and gets out the bottle. "Hope it's something else this time." Same weird-looking fish, though. Tastes about the same. Later that summer, he heads into town to trade again. Now he knows where to look it's not hard to find the wagon. When he gets to the head of the line this time he says to the merchant "I ain't really got no problems left, but what's with the fish?" The merchant replies, "Well, absinthe makes the hearth grow flounder". INRAT

It just seems crazy to open nightclubs when virus numbers are so high and the main clubbing demographic are not fully vaccinated. I feel awful for the people who run clubs, but surely we can direct some extra public funding their way for an extra month or so. I mean, the reopening already got delayed by a month. You can keep delaying and delaying but then at some point, they have to be allowed to open "normally" Nobody is forcing anyone to go to a nightclub. Edit to add: Some signs of early slowing according to the Guardian today. Lets hope rates continue to fall. Said rates slowing not falling??

France is going full on vaccine passports from august, requiring you to show them at restaurants, stores, cinemas, hospitals, trains etc. Basically a mandatory vaccination programme, I’m glad in the uk we won’t need to carry a vaccine passport to visit tesco 😂 Macron > Johnson

I've not really understood this weird "gotcha" comparison. I've never had to show my immunisation records to get in to a night club or "large event". I think people are deliberately conflating the idea of an international travel vaccine passport, which does essentially already exist, and one for regular use inside a country, which is very much a new idea and pretending it isn't is rather bonkers. I still haven't made up my mind on whether I like the idea of them or not, but to say it is nothing new is gaalighting. I sure as hell don't remember the bouncer at Oceana asking when my last tetanus booster was. I think you've hit the nail on the head there! Missed no? By some distance

I mean I suppose we'll just get used to vaccine passports as we do everything else. I know logically it's no different to a bag search or ID check, but maybe because it's medical it seems more... I don't know. I mean if you bring a bag to a venue, well that's on you. You get it searched. If a venue says "you cannot enter until you have had a specific type of medicine", it just feels a bit... I mean am I crazy? It feels a bit weird, right? I'm not saying it's outright wrong and I understand the reasoning, it just feels off. Don’t feel off. It’s a good thing. We’re in unprecedented times. It is for your benefit

I find it hilarious how Covid has brought out the worst kind of moral superiority in some people. If I didn't laugh, I'd probably cry with despair. I'm better, kinder and/or more caring than you because... A good thing? Or a hinderance?

That’s not comparable. I don’t think that’s a great post Ok. That’s my opinion though. After everyone has been offered 2 jabs and theres been time for it to be effective, we need to go back to as normal as possible IMO. I’m pro masks now, but if we continue with them once the vaccine is fully rolled out, then what? When does it end? Humans need to be exposed to pathogens to build immunity. The reason there’s an outbreak of winter vomiting virus now and the reason they are expecting flu to be awful this year is cos of lockdowns and masks! Yes, we all have a social obligation, but I draw the line at restricting my life to protect a v small number of people who have been unable to have the vaccine and a larger number who have flat out refused it. Come on Roxie, we’re better than that

My point is that Dawn was saying some ppl will die due to others selfish actions and lack of conscience - that’s not something exclusive to covid. That’s not comparable. I don’t think that’s a great post

Well, it's all the EU's fault, innit. Treating us like we're not in the EU just because we left the EU. Don't they know who we are? What is shocking is that both sides of the Brexit debacle have behaved in this partisan and infantile way. In a global emergency there is no coming together, no cooperation, no mutual concern. Just point scoring and anger. When the aliens arrive ( not long now, my contacts tell me) will the French elbow themselves to the front of the receiving party? Gonna be rubbish .. Aaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!! The aliens are coming!!!!!!!

What is so sad is that some people will die due to others' lack of conscience. That’s the same with a lot of things though. Drink driving for example. Local to me, last year a 6 year old girl was killed walking along the road cos she was hit by an allegedly drunk driver. All actions have consequences and risk is a part of being alive! Eh?

It's currently 25 degrees in my living room and thanks to my boyfriend's obsession with tech, the ceiling fan is operated by a Wi-Fi enabled switch which has stopped working and he doesn't know why. I am not impressed! If you need a new part for the fan Ruby you can say goodbye to that until Tuesday

Glorious day, I'm currently sitting outside enjoying it before it gets too hot! There will plenty of people resembling lobsters at Silverstone today I suspect! My friend is at Silverstone this weekend. He said if he gets away with a bit of sun burn this weekend he’ll be made up

I was also jealous of Glenn Close in Streetcar
Also saw her in Sunset Boulevard and she was also great, but her Blanche Dubois made a much bigger impact and I will always remember it. I wish they had done a live recording of it
I saw Glenn Close at the Public Theater, New York in Mother of the Maid. About 30 minutes in she stopped the performance. There was lots of banging, apparently set building in another part of the venue. During the small break she conducted an impromptu conversation with audience. She was great and despite the interruption, nobody else got what we got that night. Audience in the palm of her hand. Joy to see

What's becoming quite clear is that very little changes on Monday, things might be changing in Law but businesses are basically expected to keep all existing rules in place and I imagine they all will in the main. It's certainly no "freedom day" and I'm afraid I've lost all hope of there ever being one. Guttingly it seems this is as good as it gets. What did you want to do Monday that you still believe you won't be able to?

Therss going to be more chance of dying by being hit by a bus going to the theatre itself than from dying of covid because you've been in one, but if prople want to be hermits because theres a new risk added to the hundreds there already are you happily take every day without thinking, then thats up to them. Is that true?

More like unfortunate that she doesn't acknowledge it in her own immigration policies and rhetoric. She is a hypocrite in the extreme. If you're going to criticise her for enabling racism it might be wise, if you're not from an Indian-heritage family yourself, to at least acknowledge her own lived experience of racism otherwise you open yourself up to the same accusation. Be here forever if you have to list the governments mitigating factors every time you attacked them for 'stoking the fires'

Priti Patel has been subject to far more on-line racist (and misogynist) abuse than Tyrone Mings. And in fact she is only in this country because her family were expelled by a racist regime in Uganda. Unfortunate that Mings doesn't acknowledge this. More like unfortunate that she doesn't acknowledge it in her own immigration policies and rhetoric. She is a hypocrite in the extreme. I think that is it for me. It is her governments policies, they were her words.

The vile racism and hate on social media for those three young players. Something needs to be done about anonymous accounts and those openly abusing others online. In my opinion Twitter is the cess pit of the internet and should be closed down. One of the good things twitter has done. Given a voice to the England football team. This is just... well, wow.

On the whole the Welsh fans fight amongst themselves, remember seeing a fight break out between the Swansea & Cardiff fans during a Wales match at Anfield and the reaction of the stewards was priceless as they tried to figure out what was happening in the ‘home’ stand. Wouldn't stewards at Anfield be thinking Blue on Blue. Let them get on with it?

How do you characterise the Scottish fans that came down to London on masse two weeks ago? Have you ever travelled with Celtic or Rangers fans? Just observations, your post surprised me a little Did they storm the gates of Wembley? No Did they clean up Leicester Square? Yes Not sure why its a comment that would surprise someone, Scottish fans have a history over the last 40 years of being non violent and non-threatening. England fans do not, they have rioted and fought across Europe for decades. The Bigots who follow the Old Firm are the exception and not the rule. Far too many people pejoratively use "British" when they actually should say English. The English disease of hooliganism isn't a "British" disease. Agree with lots of that, just the bad bits really and if that makes it a 'British' disease. Scotland fans do have a far better reputation, but are far from innocent. Yes you are correct about sectarianism, I think it is a bigger problem than yourself.

I'll say it slower. People are saying we can't live with restrictions forever. We literally live with restrictions every day, on what we can do and say. That's how society functions. And no one will explain to me what is different about mask wearing compared to the rest. I agree, couldn't work out if you were saying that
