Lol...you guys...I am going next sat. Not sure if im going to like it or hate it. Each post so hot and cold...Kinda think ill like it tbh.... See ya there! I feel poised to like it but I'm getting the sense it isn't the groundbreaking musicals I'd hoped it would be. I remain a constant fan of Tim Minchin's work which I think is only an advantage going into this.

It does feel like a bit of a boys adventure at times I agree, but I quite liked it. I guess not everything has to be gender balanced although you'd expect JKR to go for that sort of thing. At least she made a woman Minister for Magic, and I think looking back Hermione was my overall favourite character to watch on the stage.

You shouldn't charge for a show, unless you are confident it is ready, previews aren't for making wholesale changes and really there to make small changes. To be fair, if you end up at the point where the show is in previews and you feel there's still big problems with your show, what else would you do? Until your get the thing running on a set, with effects, costumes, orchestra and an audience you're not going to know what works and what doesn't. That's the entire point of previews. AlthoughI agree that it is annoying, particularly for us as we generally attend during previews. It's cheaper because you're seeing something unfinished.

Barbara Windsor today at The Play That Goes Wrong. According to the usher they set aside a champagne on ice for her but she never came for it. Oh to live that life...

The Queens theatre was essentially the mirror image of the Gielgud theatre from the outside, and I think Cameron Mackintosh originally wanted his grand Stephen Sondheim theatre plans to be on top of or part of the redesigned Queens when that facade was to be reintroduced. It would have been quite nice I think, it's a shame the usual bureaucracy stood in the way of a good idea.

Aside from the dark content it's quite hard to get an 8 year old to sit through effectively a 4 act play. Although I'm sure there are some 8 year olds who could, depends how stagey your child is.

At the show tonight, Darius is back, and he's doing very well. Sheridan also on good form, although I've never seen this production before so don't have anything to compare it to.

Link not working for me on my phone but this is about two ex-Impossible magicians claiming plagiarism for their tricks being used in the current production. The way the response from the producers reads, I wonder if the contract they originally signed does indeed allow this, and now that it's actually happening they're causing a fuss since it's not ideal for them.

I think it's either a 7 or an 8 depending on how generous a mood I'm in.

If you choose to get the programme, it has a little runthrough of the seven books, and a glossary of characters and terms that will come up and what they're all about.

If it does alright here presumably there's no reason it won't find new investors and launch slightly late on Broadway?

17th of September. It's just our luck that an original musical of decent quality is opening on the West End and apparently there's nowhere to put it.

My non spoilery review. Attended today with a large amount of anticipation in tow. Both shows went off without a hitch (apart from a few dropped wands) and it seems to me like it's ready to open properly now, if it ever wasn't. I think I got more enjoyment from a technical level and general Potter geekery than I got enjoyment from the actual storytelling or emotional content but it's by no means an empty spectacle. The special effects are absolutely brilliant though. None of them are truly baffling but the right things are done in the right places, without too much reliance on projections. The cast are faultless, particularly Anthony Boyle as Scorpius, Noma Dumezweni as Hermione and Jamie Parker as Harry. Those three really win the audience over, even when the script isn't giving them as much as it could. I enjoyed the whole experience and I'm glad that "the Harry Potter play" didn't feel like a rip off, or a cynical attempt to do a bit more Potter.
On the logistical end I didn't check my watch for part two but part one finished at 16.45. My tickets in the end never turned up so I was issued with a handwritten ticket at the box office with little fuss. Apparently I can return for a souvenir ticket in the future for my book, which is nice. The cast were also very prompt for my rare attendance at the stage door, they must have known I was keen to get home, bless 'em.

What is the current schedule for the two of them? Thinking of heading along next Thursday and wondering who I'll get.

I'm slightly jealous, it would be interesting to see what a musical under construction looks like.

I love how they're lecturing people on what's normal in theatre. It's not normal for previews to be cancelled. It's not completely outrageous for previews to be cancelled, but most companies can put on at least some sort of show by the time the date rolls around.
Hopefully they can get things up and running in a day or two, it would be a shame for the shows reputation to suffer because of being overly ambitious on a technical level.

Can we safely assume the opening prices of Hamilton in London won't be ridiculous? Even to open at Book of Mormon prices prior to the demand being established is risky in an untested market. Although I suppose these days you can set your dynamic pricing to start low and rocket up as far as you like until all the seats are sold.

For people worried about tickets turning up in the post and when, I gave them a ring a few days ago because I'm now less than a week away and nothing yet. They advised waiting until 3 days before the show and then if still nothing phone up so they can cancel the tickets and you can pick them up at the box office.

In the second half, the usher in question just kept moving about the auditorium. There was another one who she kept changing places with for no apparent reason. Also he kept walking back and forth across the auditorium on that 'aisle.' She wasn't going to tell anyone off or anything, she just walked back and forth several times to lean against a different wall. It was very distracting in the back half of the Theatre, so for once the Bad Behaviour during the show was not caused by the audience, but by an usher. Particularly as I'm the Charing Cross theatre the back of the stalls is a bar which is out of use currently, the perfect crosswalk if the usher can be bothered walking up and down the stairs.

Side by Side by Side is absolutely hilarious, the Jonathan Groff episode is my favourite There's a great clip of them running through Groff's family farm and upsetting all the fainting goats. She also made Daniel Radcliffe seem human in a different episode.

I'm a big Tim Minchin fan in general. His musical comedy shows I've always felt were a cut above anyone else doing that sort of thing, and the Matilda blew me away as a show. I've no doubt that this might be rubbish, but his track record up to now has been stellar, so I have a lot of confidence. This is the only show I've bought expensive tickets for, even with Harry Potter I bought previews tickets.

I was stewarding round Soho for 6 hours yesterday - and it was a great atmosphere. A few issues - of course, there will always be. But it was great to see so many police out and about - all enjoying the day and being a positive, supportive presence. A very positive day - and if you want to be part of it, volunteer - you will have a great time. I might well volunteer for next year. Any particular position you'd recommend?

EDIT: Michael that video is hysterical. I remember binging OBSSESED! videos years ago- they were so good (and Nicole's was a standout) I wish he'd do more. I'm not sure how much of Seth Rudetsky I could tolerate in lengthy portions, but the videos are great.

Is there a technical term for actors being onstage as the audience file into the auditorium, going about their business or walking around prior to the show properly starting? Recent memories include Great Britain, Doctor Faustus, Everyman etc...
