Such a strong performance, so likeable, and it was such a different dynamic to see a MUCH younger Charlie who looked fresh out of uni (as alluded to in the script). So funny, and a very good actor who made the most of the more emotional moments too. If you see my previous post about last Monday's show, you'll see that I thought he stood out in the ensemble (for the right reasons, e.g. he was always in the moment), and that carried through here too. Nailed all of the big numbers vocally as well. It's a shame he's 2nd understudy as I'd recommend seeing him but finding dates might be tricky.
Aside from that, of course the show was amazing - it always is. Simon-Anthony Rhoden as brilliant as ever. I welled up a tiny bit at the end because it was just so aggressively feel good. A fab afternoon all round. My newbie friend loved it too!

He was excellent - I feel so lucky to have seen his role debut. Will post a better round up later!

Nope, scratch that, it's Jonathan Carlton's debut today. Serendipitous!

And just like that, I'm dayseating Kinky Boots on a day when Jordan Fox has two scheduled performances! 😉 My friend's coming up to visit and I suggested ages ago that we should see KB as she hasn't yet, so it's ended up happening completely accidentally.
(Queue looking fairly healthy, 10 waiting at quarter to nine).
Looking forward to seeing where this new Charlie fits in my 'ranking'.

Ooh, that sounds like some HYPE 😉 I Jordan Fox's performance at West End Live this year. Will definitely have to try and go when he's on.

Saw the new cast last night. The show is just so fun and uplifting, definitely one of my faves on the West End right now. Simon-Anthony Rhoden is just brilliant as Lola and I'm so glad he stayed on, as I loved every second he was on stage. I really enjoyed Oliver Tompsett's voice and he totally nailed Soul of a Man (somehow one of my fave musical theatre songs!). I thought his Charlie was a bit dour though, which first struck me when he went to see Harry (he looked like a bit of a stick in the mud next to Jordan Fox). It was nice to see a new take on the role (out of the other Charlies I'e seen Paul Ayres gave me fish out of water vibes, whilst David Hunter (my fave) was more hapless and the funniest in the role for me) but it took me a while to warm to. Also, I kept noticing an absolutely hilarious ensemble member going all out in the background of every scene. Turns out it was Jonathan Carlton, an understudy Charlie. Has he gone on yet? I presume he joined at the cast change? Anyway a friend of mine wants to see the show so I might see it again on Saturday. What were we saying over on the stage door thread about superfans?

I'm so confused as to why this wasn't a comedy, as it had so much potential with its campy singalong-able songs and an overblown premise. But it took itself way too seriously and (at least when I was there last night) the audience just couldn't get on board with it. It was at its best when it was a bit tongue in cheek, but it was too sincere for the majority of the time, which just didn't work. Also, the strange melding of snippets of text by Shakespeare, Chaucer, Marlowe etc. was quite odd, and although it was probably pretty clever on the page (the programme has 2 whole pages of references), on its feet it got old fast.
The cast were uniformly excellent though, with Oliver Savile and Chris Cowley being particular standouts. Such a shame, I feel bad for them as they were giving some incredible performances, but the material let them down.

Definitely echo what others are saying on here. Memphis made me a Matt Cardle fan but this isn't a role I'd have necessarily pegged him for. But time will tell I guess!

I think if we all stop for a second we can probably work out that fluffylittlechick was talking about how it's nice to see some body shape diversity on stage. Which it is.

To be honest when I went the audience was fairly well behaved and not too loud, but there were a couple of people in my peripheral vision who kept freaking out and fanning themselves overdramatically whenever Jamie(/JD) would sing anything (as in, they'd fan themselves for the duration of the song). They were on the very end of a row only a few rows from the front and were mega visible, which was more than a bit distracting. And cringey. But I suppose in the grand scheme of things it wasn't really *that* bad, and I feel a bit mean judging people for enjoying something, but then again, there are ways of doing that without attracting everyone's attention every five minutes.

Funnily enough for me Alan Burkitt was the strongest link in the cast. Loved his singing and tap solo! I also really loved him in Top Hat on tour a few years ago.

I heard Heathers might go in here (keep it in the RUG family). I'd be shocked as well, as the Savoy is an ATG house. Ha, um, slight mistake on my part... I was thinking of the Adelphi across the road! Now that *is* RUG. Doesn't make the rumour any less outlandish though.

I personally guffawed at this but I might as well tell you that I heard Heathers might go in here (keep it in the RUG family). Personally I'd be BEYOND shocked if it went into such a huge house, but everyone loves a good rumour, don't they?

Has anyone else booked for this? I'm going on the 5th July. Based on the set list I'm pretty excited! And I'm going to see Queen and Adam Lambert the night before. Needless the say the whole week is going to be pretty amazing! I normally don't really promote my blog on here but ngl I'm quite proud of this interview I just posted after chatting to Oliver Savile. Just thought I'd post it in case it was of interest.. www.talkstageytome.co.uk/2018/06/interview-oliver-savile-knights-of-rose.html

in fact the only person from his reality TV shows was Jodie Prenger, and of course she was not one of his favourites) Well Ben Forster (Superstar winner) was there and he sang loads, closing act 1 with Gethsemane even.

I was there too.
Enjoyed the set list even though there were very few surprises. For me Tyrone Huntley was the standout of the night, despite being one of the less recognisable 'names' as far as general public are concerned. His Heaven On Their Minds was stunning. Also loved the Sunset Boulevard section, which was gorgeously played by the orchestra with Ria Jones and Michael Xavier giving great performances too. And of course Beverley Knight was spectacular as well!
I must say though the lack of screens was a real issue. It was basically a radio play for me on the back of the stalls area. I'm not normally one to moan about sightlines but as this was never going to be a concert that people stood for it could maybe have been a bit better thought out.

I'm wondering if I actually saw this parodied in another team film or somewhere. If you've seen Mean Girls it may seem familiar as it was loosely based on Heathers.

Ahhh I see. What about when they say “I’m literally crying here”? Are we to assume that they’re NOT literally crying or do we take it at face value and believe it? Very confusing! And yes yes I am kidding. A bit. I do think that we have a generation of people who appear to be less resilient though. Ha! I mean, 'I'm literally crying' is probably one of my most used phrases and even I'm not sure what the distinction is really! Especially as I very rarely am LITERALLY crying Although maybe if I was in the crowd at one of these shows it'd be a different story!

As a former 'Gleek' and on going Lea Michele fan from the Spring Awakening days, I reckon I'd probably be pretty excited to be in the audience at one of these concerts too. In fact I really do hope they decide to bring the tour over here!
Tbh Burly, I can't tell if you're kidding or not, but when people say stuff like 'I'm crying' they rarely mean that they're sitting in front of their computer *actually* crying. Just like when people say 'lol' it's probably safe to assume they're not actually laughing out loud most of the time. It's more an expression like 'wow, I'm loving this'. .
Also, it is possible to cry with happiness at something, I don't think that shows a weakness of someone's character or is a good indicator of how someone deals with grief or traumatic experiences.
Given how Glee was such a big part of so many tweens' lives a few years back, I don't think it's unreasonable to get emotional experiencing two of its biggest stars singing live together.

I'm loving Carousel so far. Jessie Mueller is one of my favourite musical theatre stars, and she sounds gorgeous as Julie. As does Joshua Henry, who never disappoints as far as I'm concerned. Lindsay Mendez sounds fabulous in Mr Snow too.
Does the album sound really echoey to anyone else though? If I Loved You sounded like it was being sung under a canal bridge through my earphones.

So heartened to hear that news about Brittney Johnson's casting. I was certain the casting directors etc. would break the mould eventually! Best of luck to her.
