Bang on Mark, because of high ticket prices, I often look on here for word of mouth. Of course there are some shows I would see without question, but they are few and far between. Apart from WOM, Subject is my next criteria. Having said that, I am famous for backing none starters. I had a spare afternoon years ago and whittled my choice down to Wicked or Marguerite. I figured that with the writers, Ruthie and Julian in it, Marguerite would run longest. How wrong can you be!
I'm not so sure. I think we would have expected someone to tweet commentary 24/7 and the wailing would have reached new peaks far quicker with the aid of social media - which magnifies absolutely everything to a preposterous degree (well, to those who remember plenty of life before it, anyway).
Oh gosh, can you imagine what it would have been like if it had happened now with all of the social media nonsense that goes on nowadays?
Although having said that, had she lived for another 20 years she probably would have turned into Jackie Onassis, marrying some wealthy millionaire and spending her life swanning around on yachts spending his money. If not fading into obscurity, she would have become just another gazillionaire socialite hosting charity galas and spending too much money on plastic surgery for herself and her freeloading hanger on "rock" Paul Burrell.
Well, St Paul of Burrell was busy delivering flowers in Wrexham yesterday of all days.
I have been tempted to vent my opinion on Facebook, but realised people who know where I live took a different view to me and would probably have put my windows through.
Princess Diana died in very tragic circumstances. I am very sorry she lost her life, but enough already. It was 20 years ago, so what? Let her rest in peace.
The Royal Family have faced bigger crisis and managed them (Wallace Simpson). I think I am the only person I know, who thinks the Queen handled the aftermath of her death in a very human way. Your grandchildren have lost their mother, of course you should shield them from public gawping. Keep them as safe and secure as you can. The public outrage was just maudlin, did they expect to see William and Harry paraded for their benefit? Did the public expect to see the Queen weep in the Mall, or Prince Charles break down in Green Park? It was never going to happen, but the tabloid press were implicit in whipping up public opinion to sell their grubby papers. Just as they are doing now.
Prince George, Duke of Kent, was killed during World War II, in the crash of a military plane. He never knew his youngest child,(now) Prince Michael of Kent, was born some weeks after his death. Was his gallant death remembered 20 years later?
I guess the adverts will take come getting used to, but come on, Bake Off isn't the first show to ever have adverts. I really ain't a big deal.
Sorry to see that some didn't enjoy - but it does confuse me because, as I say, I really don't see the difference.
Of course GBBO will have adverts now it is on Ch4, but that is the difference and one of the reasons I didn't enjoy it. It spoils the flow and that last break was just revenue greedy!
Aw sorry, it was a turn off for me. Noel Fielding, I didn't believe he knew what he was talking about in his voice overs. Prue Leith just didn't ring true playing Mary Berry. I got the feeling she was having a little vomit in her mouth at times and also decided to patronise her way through. Those ad breaks, and the cheap one at the end, with just a couple of minutes programme on the return. The Sandi/Noel exchanges were a bit telegraphed. I can now miss it with a clear conscience!
Danieljohnson14 - you confuse me in this post! At one point you tell snutte he/she can call you what they like, then you tell us you punched someone in the face for calling you "bitch"!!!!
Is the location of the calling important? We need to know!!
Well, what is the world to call us, if we can't agree what we want to be called? I use the wider "we", because this board is clearly a cross section of people. Earlier in this conversation cmonfeet asked "Is there hate in their hearts when they say it?" That for me cuts to the heart of the matter. Call me a queer one way and I'll laugh, call me a queer in another way and I'll take your face off. Same with the word "gay". As people who appreciate theatre and therefore I'm sure words, we know the power of interpreting words. How many plays have we seen where our perception has been changed because of the way words are used. There are hundreds of interpretations of the simple line from Lady Bracknell in "....Earnest" for example. "A handbag" are the words, how they are vocalised is the meaning. There is of course a perfectly good word in the lexicon for one who is attracted the same sex - it is homosexual.
I blame Freddie Laker for all this shenanagins. Paying for drinks et al. When I fly BOAC on the Empire route, the steward Is always so polite and 'umble especially when the Yorkshire puddings don't rise.
Publicly, I am boycotting the new version, but of course I'll have a look!!! The three magic ingredients have gone though, Mary with Paul was good symmetry and of course Mel and Sue were an excellent combination. It will be interesting to see if Noel and Sandi can find that sense of mischief. Will Prue Leith have symmetry with Paul? I can't see it because when she has been a judge on other things, she is quite abrasive. Of course it will be more important than ever to have a group of engaging cooks. Oh, it's all to play for!!!!
Finally got to see Funny Girl last night and enjoyed the show. As so many have said, Sheridan Smith is worth the ticket price alone, but for me once you've said that you have said it all. Some great songs in there, the storyline is just paper thin though. The staging is good both dsign and what's on it. Some engaging comedy, but stage corpses which were just a bit too obvious. See Crabtree's posting above. Unlike some, I have a problem with Darius Danesh or Campbell. I thought he lacked stage presence and on the evidence of last nights offering, he seemed to text his performance in.
I'm not playing devils advocate here, I am genuinely interested to read your opinions - Given that John Wilson has created such a niche for himself and his orchestra and can and has created so many magical evenings with his music, do people feel he is playing "second fiddle" (pun intended!)when the performance is semi-staged like this?
ptetty white cast hey? Maybe one mixed race guy in the emsemble...apart from that.... Even the guy playing the Persian was white doing a terrible mel Brooke's voice. Same problems as in half a sixpence, why would the director cast in the same way after that backlash? We are in 2017 right? Man playing curly beautiful voice, one of the best I've heard for a long time....terrible actor. Goodnight
Wrong, look again, there was a black actor in the company.
