Amazing! Amazing theatre for it too! But an absolute barn! Hoping for a limited run so it sells well.

The casting breakdown went out this morning I think, running for about a month from 13 February to 10 March; press night is on 15 February. Above The Stag. Love this show!

Question for when Jennifer went on as Bobbie.... Does anyone know in the schedule where she seems different versions of herself - working, pregnant, with a baby etc, did all of those actresses still wear Bobbie's red wig to copy Rosalie's own hair even though she wasn't in the show? Or did they have dark wigs like what Jennifer wears as jenny? I have a feeling they didn’t tech that scene until half way through previews so it could well have been that scene wasn’t even part of the public show at that point.

Well personally I am delighted. This show provided a 6 year old version of myself with his first obsession and his first window into the fabulous world of musical theatre which went on to be a huge part of his life, so I hope that this will be accessible to other young children (i.e, without a £90 ticket price) and have the same effect on them.

This is Louise Dearman role right?! I mean, surely this is her gig. That's dream casting right there and it's the reason I'd go back to see a production of The King and I. If Dearman isn’t even doing stuff in town to be close to her family, I doubt she’ll do anything on tour..

Just back from seeing this. Struggling to find any positive or redeeming factor other than the fact it came down before 10pm. I love Shakespeare at even the worst of times but productions like this make me understand why a lot of people ‘don’t like shakespeare’. Uninspired direction, strange casting choices.. not one for me I’m afraid.

I could definitely see Suzie playing that role. There are so many talented West End actresses that it would be a real, real tragedy for them to stunt cast or bring someone over.

Saw this yesterday also, got lucky with the TodayTix lottery. Well - this is absolutely top quality, high-class, well executed, premium grade musical theatre isn’t it.
Stellar performances, all roles are given their chance to shine at least once and they certainly deliver - Jonny Bailey was a stand out for me personally but also loved Patti, Rosalie and, to my surprise, Mel was delightful too.
The Direction was thoughtful and the set design was modern and clever.
I’d go out on a limb and say this is technically the best musical on the West End currently, in a sense that there are no dud performances, no tired bits of direction or bad habits that can develop over a long run (i.e Wicked or Les Mis).
That being said, I don’t have the itch to go back time and time again to shows that are arguably less technically solid but provide a better, somewhat more visceral experience such as Jamie, Wicked, 42nd St. However, I cannot deny the fact that it was all kinds of wonderful and I wish it a great run with all the awards it truly deserves.

Why is this announcement taking Soooooolonnnnng? I just want to know now! If callbacks were happening last Wednesday, finals might not be for another week or so - then it’ll take a few days for agents to go back and forward with the casting directors before confirming, plus they’ll need to get some sort of press release in order.. so it’s not really taking any longer than it normally takes to cast a major West End transfer of a big Broadway show!

I saw both Sara and Katharine as Jenna on Broadway and enjoyed both performances equally - Katharine certainly has more of a household name status in the USA than here in the U.K. so I don’t think the decision is anything to do with ticket sales, more to do with opening the show with a safe pair of hands (in terms of the role and the show). She received a standing ovation after She Used To Be Mine so the audience certainly lapped her up. There is certainly nothing lacking in her vocal or acting ability, but I was hoping for a home-grown actor to open the show here (Dearman, Janson, Khadime etc).

I can’t imagine Cameron will be doing absolutely anything with a show which is still selling well.

I’d never heard the song before I heard Rachel’s version at the press event. Have to admit I’ve definitely heard Rachel sing better, and the performance didn’t particularly make me want to go and see her in the show. Maybe something to do with the acoustics in the room - as a singer myself, the argument of ‘it’s a new song for her’ doesn’t really stand with me as she will have been rehearsing this song for weeks.
Thought the group bits sounded lovely though - will definitely be visiting into the run.

Regardless of who plays Evan, I can’t get over how ridiculously perfect The Dearman is for Heidi. I can so clearly hear her singing So Big So Small in my head.

I feel very strongly about there being an alternate - seeing The King and I last week gave me some perspective on how much MT has changed over the decades. Whilst all of the roles in The King and I are no mean feat and I thought the quality of the show was one of the highest I’ve seen for a long time, the reality is that these roles and many shows of its era are justiable to be performed 8 times a week with no real difficulty by any seasoned professional - but a show like DEH and many other modern shows (ie Wicked, Dreamgirls) put so much more physical and emotional pressure on its lead roles than most ‘traditional’ shows. Therefore it’s completely justifiable to have someone on hand (not just an understudy) to take some of the pressure off. There was a debate on this board earlier this year on the subject of alternates and some people believed that if the actor can’t handle 8 shows a week they should “choose a different profession” - but the physical (including singing) and emotional commitment is different from show to show and I truly think alternates should be considered for roles like Evan to maintain quality and consistency on stage but also for the actors’ well-being.

I just can’t see them casting a blond white boy to play Evan here, regardless of how talented he is (or isn’t).

Is James still supervising? I can’t see him being happy with that... Have you heard it? A mess. Certainly showing what she can do vocally but it lacks phrasing and musicality. A borderline-ugly rendition..

They’ve been seeing people for Jenna so they’re prob not bringing anyone over for it.. unless Sara or someone will do a short run.

Ariana Grande? What's wrong with them? She has a huge fan base and will get the viewers in. She also loves the show. After seeing her incredible performance in "The Star is Born" I am voting for Gaga to play the lead in the film. She would be perfect! Yes please. She would be so true to the emotional portrayal as well. Ariana could make a great Nessa?

She’s a true professional that can go in, turn it on and get the job done. Can’t wait to see what she does next.

Last I heard, Dearman is quite happy being paid mega bucks for the odd concert and staying at home with her family the rest of the time. Happy to be proven wrong though as would love to see her in something again.

I think the real question is how can they justify charging upwards of $500 for one seat? We are looking to go in Ft Lauderdale at Christmas and we were offered $2000 seats each. That’s more than our flight itself....

Saw the show this week. Laura Pick’s delivery of Elphaba is absolutely phenomenal. Really well thought-out acting choices and a stellar voice. Not sure she has that extra star quality that we get used to seeing in a lead Elphaba but she is a great standby.
Sophie has improved a lot and is a natural on the stage but I’m still not sure she’s the best person for this paticuar job. She is a wonderful performer and I can’t wait to see her in something that suits her a little more than Glinda.
David Witts has the potential to be my least favourite Fiyero - usually the stunt castes ones can either sing well, dance well or fill out the costumes well but unfortunately it was 0/3 for me....
Rosa and the gorgeous boy playing Boq who’s name I can’t remember stood out to me. Loved their chemistry and take on the roles.
The show is overall in great shape though - a few Lainey ensemble boys pulling the focus a little but this ensemble brought a completely different feel to previous ensembles which I liked.

Was chatting with my friend the other day. What’s next for Clare? She truly is the star of this show but the role is so niche and she is in her mid thirties - she can dance incredibly there’s no doubt about that but she’s not the most exceptional singer so what could she follow this with? She surely can’t go back to the ensemble now but a girl’s gotta work? Seems a real shame that there’s nothing on (at the moment) for which she fits the bill as she is a huge talent that deserves a lead role on the west end.

I think it also has something to do with how humour is acknowledged by culture. I’ve been to see the show with 2 different British people - both of whom found the character and his scenes humorous and understood the references; neither of whom laughed out loud or applauded at the jokes. The humour was not lost on them, they simply had a more internal appreciation as opposed to an external appreciation, which could be argued as somewhat representational of the different ways humour is responded to in British vs American cultures. British humour has a tendency to be internal / applied rather than American humour which is often obvious and outward; thus the responses are likely to vary in the same way.
