I'm sorry but I'm sure there are actresses out there capable of playing Elphaba. Yes, it is a hard character to play vocally, but it's not like it is the most challenging role ever in the history of musical theatre.

I don’t think there will be a fresh Elphaba ever again for lead, this is because it takes time to build stamina for the role. It makes complete sense that they line someone up as standby with the view to take over because they develop the stamina as standby and are ready to hit the ground running as lead. Although that didn't work when they first tried it with Kerry Ellis who, after 4 months of standbying, did her first show as lead, overdid it & had to take quite a lot of shows off for the next few weeks to recover. (Though I am personally forever grateful to her as it introduced me to Cassidy Janson!)

Since Rachel Tucker left I've been hoping for the likes of Rachel John and Sabrina Aloueche. But given up hope now of ever getting a brand new Elphaba. Will be the same recycled ... #dull I would love to see Sabrina Aloueche as Elphaba I'm almost certain when Louise Dearman was cast it was between her and Sabrina Aloueche? Sure there were tweets at the time from Sabrina about how the 'best person' got the role, congratulating Louise? 🤔

But you made it sound as if Elphaba was such an exclusive character and new actresses would have to have special training or something. All roles need training. We get new Valjeans and Javerts, Phantoms and Christines, etc... once in a while, and those are more demanding parts. Anyway, sorry if I misinterpreted your post.

I just like the idea of one or both of the girls leaving at every cast change. Regardless they return or not, it just makes it more exciting for me personally. Selfish I know, but true. In this years case, I would rather keep Alice over Sophie, but if both left I wouldn't particuarly care.

I know how passionate the wicked fans are. So yeah your spot on. I think Sabrina was very close to getting the role a few years back.

Stamina? Training? There are only two big sings in it. I know she’s on stage a fair amount but It’s not exactly Brunnhilde from the Ring Cycle is it?

As time has gone on I agree with this more and more. I don't even think whoever plays Elphaba really even needs a Standby, understudies would be fine, but I get the whole liability purpose. Glinda definately doesn't need a Standby (well, most don't). I can understand why some productions don't bother with a Standby for her.

Benjamin Yates on his Fiyero debut. I LOVE it! Better than Aaron Sidwell according to my friend who has seen the tour cast. Apparently Aaron is quite rude/standoffish at stage door too.

If Ria Jones can turn up night after night for 'Sunset Boulevard' there's no reason why an Elphaba can't do the same for 'Wicked'. It's not that tough a sing, all they've got to do is waft a broomstick about for the most part, they're just lazy.

I mean I wasn't at stage door in Liverpool to see him, (I usually only bother stopping the girls, I let everyone else make their own mind up about stopping or not) but I was clearly there after the show collecting autographs and he did just knowingly look me up and down in my Wicked shirt and walked off. Also this is totally the wrong thread, but I'm ready to jump up and go if Ben Yates goes on in Sunderland. I have a friend who rushed to his debut and she said it was completely worth the stress and extra pennies.

In fact, I'd say the hardest job on 'Wicked' is whoever has to shoehorn Fiyero into those jodhpurs. A job I'm more than happy to volunteer for if they're short staffed by the way.

Rachel, Louise, Amy..they’ve all done just fine. I just said that it makes more sense for them not to go straight in if they could build stamina / develop their character as standby Why not break them in gently if it’s an option? And save their voice in the long run? I’m not sure my original post was understood. I was merely saying that it’s only the fans that care about a ‘new’ Elphaba, it is of little appeal for the production team as it’s a big risk.

Also from the producers' point of view, cast someone who has played the role before and they'll likely need less rehearsal. Costumes and wigs may still be in storage. Show business is a business and any pennies that they can save, they will!

Elphaba is also a dream role for so many women, and no one seems to get the chance to play her other than people who already hace. The same can be said for instance with the two most obvious roles for graduates or newcomers though. Katie would never let Nessa go, and Sam took ages to let Boq go.

You seem to forget that this is a full-time job for the actors involved. It's all well and good saying it'd be nice to hand the role to someone else, but when that role earns you a living, there are far more important things to consider

I am sure he is perfectly civil at stage door. The problem comes when fans have such unrealistic expectations of the "stage door experience" that they expect chats and lots of attention. Some MT performers are prepared to indulge people with this. Fine. Some are not. Also fine.

I honestly don’t get the fascination with “new” Elphaba’s!
We have 8 ladies currently green, 7 of who are new in the last 12 months (including Alexandra Grierson who still hasn’t been on). And the 8th was Alice promoted from Standby who did a handful of shows because Rachel was a machine and very rarely off in the last run.
How can that be recycling?!

Did you say "excuse me Aaron can I have your autograph?" or did you say nothing?
Lots of the cast members assume that people are just there for the leads, as many are.
He's hardly going to just approach people and give out autographs to people who haven't asked for them.
I'm not a fan of his Fiyero particularly but really... how ridiculous!

Only had the shirt on because it's actually one of the warmest peices of clothing I own for layering (I usually make a conscious effort to not wear that shirt to the show 😂) and I'd travelled 6 hours to Liverpool that day.
I wasnt angry that he didn't stop, it was more the way he looked at me and my friend before we could even ask. Was he angry we didn't stop him? I'll try to stop him when I next go because Im trying to fill my programme but it was just a bit odd. There's rushing off cause you're missing your train and then there's the way he looked at us which wasn't pleasant. I don't have high hopes of the stage door experience, an autograph in my programme and maybe a photo if I enjoyed the performance that much (but chances are if I didn't enjoy it I'm not going to go to stage door)
Edit - (Looked back at some photos and saw I was just wearing a topically green jumper so no idea what I did wrong)

In truth I agree about asking politely rather than just letting them assume you want an autograph. I stage doored the final 42nd Street cast performance and as Stuart walked out I asked him if he'd sign. He said that he doesn't usually stop. Not to be rude, but he just doesn't realise that people want to talk to him haha.

So you didn't ask him to stop.
He didn't stop.
You are complaining about it.
I really have heard it all now!
No wonder my visits to stage door are few and far between these days. Between those fans who want endless chats, the twelfth selfie of the week and (a current trend) those who think the cast should counsel them on various aspects of their life it's a miracle the performers manage to get home and have any kind of break before the performance begins the next day!

She must assume everyone was there to see Sheena and now Lulu and was surprised I wanted to see her. What a crying shame. The whole audience should be congratulating her at the stage door every night.

Although I might not stage door because it’s a matinee (not many would come out) and the trains home from Edinburgh suck. Even on Saturdays.
