Cats is the most pointless thing I have ever seen on a stage. I just don't get it and how it is still going, despite being so dated. Sorry Cats fans. A pussy allergy? I'm sure I've seen a cream for that.

Just noticed that the Evening Standard's editorial today includes praise for Anish Kapoor's design for Tristan and Isolde along with plea to ensue survival of ENO.

I also enjoyed this. Well acted and certainly an allegory - but it's a challenge teasing out the different elements. Some great lines in it (usually delivered out of the blue). "I've been taking the cat's Prozac" and (very fitting for this Board) "man cannot listen to show tunes alone"!

Yes I agree about Luidmyla Monastyrska, but was not taken so much with Leonardo Capalbo myself!

I went not that long ago (got a late cut price deal from the theatre website). Some songs are short, but some are longer.
I agree with the Monkey. The audience loved the show, the theatre/producers are doing well out of it, so it's a success in business terms. It might not be high art, but if it makes people happy for a couple of hours, that's fine with me!

Went last night. Obviously the main draw was Placcido Domingo. Reading reviews on his voice at age 75 I wondered what he would be like, but I needed not to worry – rich, beautiful and powerful enough immediately to fill the house. Hearing him sing (as the old king) about whether the king was perceived as an old man who was past it (I of course paraphrase!) was particularly touching.
The ENO chorus has rightly come in for praise recently (Olivier award, etc.), but I want to highlight the ROH chorus on this occasion. Nabucco has lots of opportunities for the chorus to shine and they did – no more so than their rendition of Va, pensiero, which certainly got a strong response from the audience.

Bearing in mind this is Disney, though, and everything they do is stage-managed to total perfection. Should be quite an evening. Indeed - am looking forward to it. Several on this board seem to be going so will be interesting to compare notes afterwards.

Well the first preview has produced the first sort of review in the Mirror - but doesn't give much away

It has gone all quiet, on the theatre that is due to open next year to be run by Hytner and Starr, it is going to be located near Tower Bridge I believe. I wonder what they going to call this? It's the London Theatre Company, it doesn't open until next Autumn. To be clear the London Theatre Company is the company, the theatre is as yet not named (unless someone else knows differently). Further, they state it will be their "first new theatre" and "we’re actively exploring other venues and hope over the next few years to be able to open a number of new independent theatres, of different scales but operating on similar principles".
I hope they don't try to call the theatre the "London Theatre" given London already has one or two other theatres (and it already is the name of a fringe theatre near New Cross).

Having caught this I simply want to echo what others have said about both the play and the performances. Two excellent performances in an important new play.

ALW may have possibly identified an interesting story and might produce a decent musical. However, it might be very hard to grab people's attention. So it might turn out to have some mild positive critical response, but not be commercial.
He could update Starlight Express - instead of trains it could be electric vehicles that rush around the stage for two and a half hours but so quietly no one can hear anything!

Agree this sounds bad! Of course, the St James Theatre is not actually in St James (there used to be a St James Theatre in St James) and is on Palace Street. But 'The Other' seems to imply an existence in relation to something else, whereas I would want a name emphasising its existence in its own right.

According to tonight's Evening Standard there will be a new biopic of Sinatra to open in 2018. Does not say which theatre, but is being taken forward by ATG. (It makes clear this is different from the thing last year at the Palladium)

Many years ago I went to a performance of Plautus' Menaechmi and, after the interval, Shakespeare's adaptation of it - The Comedy of Errors. The latter is better, but putting the two together was an interesting experience.
Of course The Comedy of Errors was itself adapted as a musical by Rodgers and Hart as The Boys from Syracuse, but I have not seen that.

I think a Marmite play requires 1* and 5* reviews. This is like that weak summer version of Marmite that came out a few years ago.
Or a Gentleman's Relish of a play?

It's really not necessary to try and make smart comments which take mine out of context. No, nobody is shocked that there is a flying carpet in Aladdin. That wasn't the point being made. It is just the opinion of some that we would rather not know how the flying is achieved. But now it would appear that, in the spirit of good will, some posters' opinions are mocked. Hm. Cheers. Calm down. No one is mocking you.

Looks like Fiona Mountford will give it a positive review "a palpable hit" "a super ....new play", given her Twitter reaction
