A few years ago I took a friend to see Northern Ballets Dracula at Bradford where my brother was conducting.
At the interval my friend stood up and in a loud voice said “I had no idea Dracula was a vampire.”

I have this single. Well, isn't it amazing what you find trawling the internet when you wake up needlessly early. Who knew The Jellicle Ball was used as the theme for the BBC World Cup Grandstand in 1982? Not me.

I would love a producer to take a risk and to bring back some older classics to the touring rosta Brigadoon Camelot The Boy Friend Bless the Bride Salad Days They are all great scores. Better than most of the things that reach the stage these days. It takes classy casting and quality productions and great marketing to persuade people to give them a go. But once people get to know older shows, they will love them. Brigadoonand Bless The Bride yes please. Loved doing them as an amateur. I’d love to see The Desert Song and The Music Man tour. Two more amateur favourites.

Distant memories of Andrew O'Connor (whatever happened to him?!) in the 1994 tour, alongside Rebecca Thornhill who I've seen in many shows since. Can't remember how much comic 'business' he did though. Andrew was a brilliant Bill and did a lot of comic stuff mostly not scripted. Loved this version. Saw it at every venue.

Took my brother who was about 12 or 13 to see the UK tour of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ar Darlington Civic Theatre. We were sat dead centre of the front row right behind the Musical Director. Throughout the show my brother kept tutting and commenting on how the MD was conducting and the mistakes the orchestra were making. I kept telling him to be quiet but he carried on. At the end of the show the MD turned around and told me everything he’d said was correct. My brother went on to be MD of English National Ballet and he has worked with that MD!
Another time I’d had a rough day at work and rushed to get home, changed and off to see “A Royal Gala” at the Theatre Royal with Fergie and Andrew so secutity was tight. At the interval I was in the foyer with friends lookinh in my bag for some chocolate. Never thinking I said - bloody gun takes up all the space - as a joke. Next thing I knew I was in a private room having my bag and person searched. I was let off with a friendly warning and tgey kept my chocolate. A few months later I was at a performance of NBT where a Royal was involved, I can’t remember who. Never thinking I said the same gun thing again and again I was bustled into a room and searched again. The guys couldn’t believe it was the second time I’d said it.

I love the music in Evita but I can't stand "Don't cry for me Argentina", I find it very dull compared to the rest of the lush score. Me to.

Not a theatre production but I was at the Sunday For Sammy charity show at Newcastle's arena. (It had Ryan Molloy from Jersey Boys on). Its normally at the City Hall. At the City Hall people stay in their seats and enjoy the show. Because it was at the Arena people were constantly up and down to the bar and toilets and not quietly. The couple in front of me were up and down at least 3 times every act. In the end the woman next to me snapped at them - fot gods sake stop getting up and down. I want to watch the show not be disturbed by you! He looked at her, laughed and left returning with drinks. Then his female accomplice began to twist because "I don't do plastic cups!" Apart from that a cracking show.

There’s a huge difference between hearing it in a top venue with a huge orchestra (something many commented on for Sunset) as opposed to the local amdram’s venue and a reduced band, I think. Not if the singing and acting are crap! A wonderfully played score can be ruined by the singing on top of it. Either way, it's not my favourite musical in the world, and it's far too long, so if they don't cast someone who can do Anthem justice, I won't be going. For me best ever version of Anthem was sung by Maurice Clarke. That version will take a hell of a lot of beating.

A very satisfying performance at today's matinee. I was very impressed by Song of the Earth. The Royal Ballet have been dancing this forever but, I think this was ENB's first attempt, and very accomplished it was too. It is one of Macmillan's greatest ballets and I think I enjoyed it more at The Coliseum than at ROH - hard to put my finger on why but it seems to fit the 'oblong' stage better than at The Garden. I thought La Sylphide was pure pleasure from beginning to end. As tonyloco has mentioned it is a delicious campfest, particularly act one, and it was danced extremely well - the corps de ballet seem better drilled at the moment than the norm at Covent Garden. Another area where ENB show up RB was in the quality of the orchestral playing. The ROH orchestra often play at the highest international level for operas but most of the time for ballets they really can't be arsed. These days I go to almost as many ballets as operas and I would say the orchestra on average plays at 60% of their potential for ballets. Orchestra conducted by my brother. One day I will get to see him in London.
