I do wonder why people are so against shows being reimagined. Theatre isn't a museum piece that is the same for all eternity. Quite. And Sunset is in no way a perfect show. I’ve never quite got over the fact that aside from the title song, the tune of which we hear all through act 1, there are only two new songs in Act 2 (AIWNSG and Too much in Love)…everything else is a reprise. I always feel like the the opening 20 minutes is wonderful and the rest is all a bit lazy. Just my opinion of course. It gets away with it by all the underscoring and ‘incidental’ music being luscious strings and atmospheric swells. Whilst they are mostly variations of the same tune they ain’t half gorgeous. This was my issue with the Watermill version…there wasn’t really enough power to ‘swell’.

I have never heard of NS. For me a star is someone who most people can recognise, specially regular theatre goers. Jamie Lloyd I know, and like sometimes. With respect, it is probably aimed at people who have. Unless one lived on a diet exclusively of Radio 3 & 4 and BBC 4 over the last ten years, and read only broadsheet newspapers (throwing the supplements away unopened) I struggle to see how one would not be aware of NS or at least the PCD? Or am I just very lowest common denominator?

Given this is supposedly going to the Savoy, the chances of a big set are zero. This is why we need details! Don’t forget the big ol’ sorority house frame set from Legally Blonde squeezed in there. Not complex, but large. We might get decent sized if money is being spent. The Watermill production that ended up at the Comedy looked okay (and almost country house creepy). It just sounded gash cos it was actor muso.

She sounded glorious. I couldn’t quite believe what I was hearing. I thought it must be studio trickery for someone to sing on their ‘break’ so consistently but no, there it was.

Front row has gone on sale today. From what I can make out, it is row B and they are still £70!

Not sure about cast or creatives. She's a great performer but this is not the role for her in my opinion. Just the wrong side of 50 for me. She undoubtedly has a phenomenal voice. She could very well smash it, but it would be a very different Sunset. We need to pity Norma; she had it all but now she’s been left behind. I do not believe that this is the case with NS. She is still, if you will, smoking hot. You still definitely would. Many lines simply wouldn’t make sense.

It is slightly less spectacular on tour. Pride rock is not as big, the stampede scene is not as frenetic or overwhelming. Whilst it is ‘the same’, it isn’t quite the same. It’s good enough though.

I look forward to all the other new revivals based on a boozy conversation after the Coronation concert. It could be worse. It could be Katy Perry with Lionel playing Max.

14 songs in her concert. Isn’t that a little on the low side? I think there’s a lot of talking too.

Hannah would absolutely smash it as Norma, but i’m not sure it would be much of a challenge for her. If Joe was cast with somebody meaty it might be worth it, but these seem like beats that Hannah has played before.

You didn’t bob down with a tape measure in the interval? Rude. 🤣🤣🤣
Pleased to hear that it is worthwhile and that JB has been appropriately cast.

Sunset has been done to death over the past five years, and not sold massively well in any of its guises…heck, not even Glenn Close could make it a sell out. I’d much rather something else was revived. That may have been due to the ticket prices, I had to pay 150 quid for a decent view. That said, it was pretty full. Not my favourite Norma, vocally, having previously seen Patti & Elaine, but her acting was superb, as expected. I’d even go to see her in a straight play version of the film. I didn’t necessarily mean just the Coliseum run; the Ria Jones tour didn’t set the box office alight, nor the Alexandra Palace thing. Glenn was magnificent.

In true Theatreboard style, I am keen to know how high the stage is as there are decent priced front row seats for the date I’m interested in and my wife is 5’2”.

I think for ALW to have another successful show, he needs to take a backseat. Focus on the music and have producers who are willing to say no or veto him. And not have Lawrence O'Connor direct it. ‘Direct’ is a bit strong isn’t it? ‘Stage’ perhaps? Block? Arrange on the stage? ‘Organise’ seems the most apt description. Fine for an arena tour of ‘JCS’ and the required broad strokes; not so great for anything requiring actual performances or depth.

There are certainly many classic moments and wonderful tunes hidden within his failures, some of them so achingly brilliant that I struggle to fathom how the surrounding shows could be gotten so wrong. Love Never Dies in particular has at least 3 absolutely tremendous songs, likewise Cinderella (plus #Justice for Vanquishing of the Sea Witch). As others have said, he just needs a strong dramaturg to shape his flights of fancy more sharply, rather than bland ‘yes men’ like Connor who just churn out the most obvious and least creative version possible.

It is sad that ‘Bad Cinderella’ is closing so soon after ‘Phantom’ on Broadway. However, it isn’t a surprise is it? Time to retire to one of his homes and just write the odd rousing jingoistic anthem. He has a fantastic body of work which is eminently revivable. Best we judge him on that. I’m still surprised he found the money for BC on Broadway given its failure over here.

The re-recorded version of GD is a bit odd isn’t it? I saw them doing it on the Coronation concert and it just seemed to have some other fella honking over it. It used to be uplifting at least.

The curtain of rain was a blanket, or maybe a sheet or ... a curtain but nothing wet... that was flapped around last night. Just been pointed out that the show I had seen was Never Forget, different show, same band. The rain curtain was very clever as it could spell out words in the rain shower. It was quite cutting edge at the time, and one of the most interesting things about ‘Never Forget’.

We watched the whole thing yesterday…really good, only spoilt by a tiny bit of implausible retconning. Appealing leads alongside old favourites in the Bridgerton timeline. Golda Rosheveul walks away with the whole thing again; a fab combo of great character writing and great character acting. It is a delight.

Just got in from this very satisfying conclusion to the Guardians trilogy. More of the same lunacy, generic Marvel structure but peppered with so much emotion and all of the feels. The introduction of the Adam Warlock character is fantastically handled and the big bad is also well done. Highly recommended! NB- It must be on the very cusp of 12A, as it is borderline horror in places and there is at least one F bomb.

They’re saying…listen to my love story and watch this modern day framing device…I’m tough rarrrrr….its rubbish being a slave, I’m actually royalty…my Dad is a sh!t…God, I’m spoilt but I love clothes…oh hello handsome, this shouldn’t be happening…be my slave…this happens…why doesn’t he fancy me…slightly political bit I don’t understand…she knows, and rather than have us executed recognises our love and buries us alive together…modern day framing device revisited. The end.

It’s sounding a bit like ‘Bat’ after they took all of the expensive bits out that they didn’t want to tour, and ‘Joseph’ when they dropped the key for Burke. Basically removing the exciting bits. I hope we’re wrong though because I love the score. For Sheridan lol. Burke could have belted the hell out of Pharoah Story (and indeed all of it) so was something of a disappointment that she was lumbered with the Sheridan direction. Thank God as time progressed Linzi reverted to singing it as written. By the time the tour made it to Bristol was almost back to the original! Of course for Sheridan…I’d blocked it out 🥴

A casual peruse of the ATG site shows me that the single seats left for the Lion King in Bristol are down to £20; and they are everywhere! Good luck bargain hunters!
