Only watched a couple of bits of the recent broadcast (as I was working, and still have it recorded from Xmas anyway). But did catch the end, and watching the curtain calls and the audience reaction really quite upset me. The rush of being in a theatre, and being part of a big audience, all standing and cheering having just watched a brilliant musical, is one of the best feelings there is, and I miss it so much and wonder if I’ll ever feel it again.

Is anyone else as disappointed with this whole thing as I am? Now whilst I do not wish to come across as being ungrateful for the fact that they are free however before I get persecuted for such a comment, let me explain. I am a theatre nerd and as such, with the exception of one or two, everything he's released I already have on DVD, so for me, he's released nothing new that I haven't already seen. I have said it many times publicly and several time on thus forum anything that's going to attach a new fan base for live theatre, I'm all for. However, if you scroll back to the start of this thread people where hoping for things like Aspect of Love, Starlight Express, Song & Dance, Stephen Ward or something about Sunset Boulevard, but nothing. Not even a making of documentary. No mention of Whistle Down the Wind or The Woman in White. And they're only available for such a limited period of time. Possibly I'm greedy but give us more. He hasn’t released anything. Universal released the ALW videos in their catalogue, just as ALW said they would in his initial announcement. Not sure where people suddenly got the idea ALW would be releasing private archive recordings of shows never previously made public. Seems a lot of people misunderstood “The Shows Must Go On” series.

Oh my! I'm so happy to see this again! I used to love your website... I had no idea who had made it, but it was an amazing resource. I have never come across anyone else who shares with me the same passion for old ALW 1970s B Sides etc! Thank you! There is a small group of us, I think, who share this passion. It was harder to research 30 years ago, before the internet really took off. I remember advertising in Record Collector magazine asking for unusual ALW discs. Got some good stuff that way Now everything can be found online in an instant.

You should preserve this somewhere! So out of date now! Think I still have the original Excel file somewhere, but am glad it’s preserved on the web archive.

That meant I had to go find it: Brought back memories of my last visit to school of rock It's a good song! Wonder if she released it as a single. Would have made a great 70s Eurovision offering if you ask me! Always felt it sounded like a bonus track for Song & Dance. All this talk of By Jeeves, and old ALW songs has brought back a lot of good memories for me. Tracking down all the old TR/ALW songs, realising how much of his shows came from his musical “bottom drawer”

Maybe I`m tottaly wrong now, but I thought there is a limited edition of By Jeeves. It is a live recording of the Scarborough Cast and there is still "Female of the species" here. It called "Deadlier than the male" and was then replaced in the US version by "Love Maze". Thanks very much for this - just found a copy of this CD on Amazon and have just ordered! Can't wait to hear "Deadlier than the Male!" It was bizarre how many versions of By Jeeves were released The Scarborough live CD, the two versions of the London studio recording, the US cast. There was even the new narration for the BBC Radio 2 broadcast. I miss those good old ALW days!

Not since, but originally it was “The Ballad of Robert and Peter”. What was that in/from?! It’s one of the old unreleased recordings that was included on the “Now and Forever” boxset. And it’s an awful thing!

There was a song I used to love on the original LP called Female of the Species. Lovely melody. Don't think it ever re-surfaced anywhere else?! Not since, but originally it was “The Ballad of Robert and Peter”.

Does anyone know if the plot concept was the same in the original Jeeves in the 70s, or completely different? It wasn’t a “show within a show”, just a straight telling of the story, which contained a few similar scenes but was on the whole very different. Some songs crossed over from one version to the other serving their original purpose. Other songs have been cut or repurposed. “Wooster Will Entertain You” came from “Jeeves Is Past His Peak”, and “The Hallo Song” was originally “Eulalie” which deals with one of the biggest differences between the shows, an axed character called Sir Roderick Spode, an Oswald Mosley-ish leader of the Black Shorts. Spode’s Anthem “S.P.O.D.E.” is my favourite ALW “fanfare”. There were more songs than appear on the Jeeves cast recording, including “Literary Men” which eventually became “Unexpected Song”.

“ Announcing the news in a recorded video message, the composer said: Universal has come up with the idea of a whole series called The Shows Must Go On which is about musicals going from stage to screen and they're going to show one of mine every Friday for the next few weeks.”
I’ve highlighted the key words.
They are as likely to release an archive recording of Sunset Boulevard as they are the long rumoured ALW/Sarah Brightman sex tape.
They have one video left in the bag, and will be “letting it out of the bag” next week.

Absolutely loved watching this concert again today. Still the best musical theatre concert I’ve ever been to.

I can see from the schedule that Channel 5 are starting their Golden Girls run on Monday with the pilot episode. If you’re new to the series don’t necessarily judge it by that one - it changed quite a lot after the pilot

He originally said there'd be 7 weeks of stuff. We've had 3, and it's safe to assume the proshot Cats will be streamed, and By Jeeves. That still leaves 2 slots. Cross your fingers that those will be something rare and exciting 🤞 I’d say one of those two will end up being Love Never Dies, given that there is an already released recording. My bet is the ALW RAH 50th birthday concert for the last of the 7

Assuming the proshot Cats is going to appear at some point. At least after that and Phantom, that's all of the 'already available' performances covered and we might then start getting some rarer stuff. While I get that they want to appeal to the masses, they must know that a lot of us have already seen these mainstream recordings numerous times. Having said that, if they captured Hannah Waddingham and Danielle Hope in Oz, I will be very happy. Or anything Sunset-related. You’re forgetting By Jeeves.

JCS seems to be done as a real sensory overload these days. I'd love to see a small scale, intimate and human version, just all about the actors and not technology. That was the Lyceum production - still the best version I’ve seen.

Years ago I’d have booked 3 or 4 performances by now, but money is tight and the subject matter doesn’t excite me, so l’ll wait and see. So steve does that mean only 1 or 2 performances now No it means I haven’t booked any. Assuming the world ever restarts again and I’m still alive, I will obviously see the show eventually. But right now I really couldn’t care less about it.

I thought I saw it as I peered over the crowd in front of the merch stand, but perhaps I was wrong. I signed up for news about it a few months back. I think I’m just impatient! They were selling the Australian recording when the show opened last year - perhaps it’s that you saw.

If, if, if... We don’t live in that society - not yet. The world is not fair, or just. People are still discriminated against. We can’t wish it into being over night. If we want it we have to fight for it. Wish I could “like” this more than once.

I’m convinced Queen Bee is Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Denise’s speaking voice was unmistakable. It’s 100% Nicola Roberts. This week’s VT was all about she she couldn’t speak french... as in Girls Aloud’s ‘Can’t Speak French’ song. It’s definitely her, I’ve spent almost 20 years listening to her sing in a daily basis. Ahhhhh!!!

I was wondering how they keep the identites secret, so it makes sense that I just read that they do the build up to the reveal with the audience then boot them out for the actual unmasking. But they clearly show the unmasked singer performing in front of the audience, so how does that work?
