Hate to say it, but I believe a lot of acting direction and details that were put to Alfie and Michael last night were lifted from John and Earl's takes on their characters. Having seen all the pairings I've come to recognise some little moves unique to each actor, and that's probably why I felt that some of Alfie and Michael's new acting seemed "added on", inauthentic and unnatural. But of course this wouldn't be an issue for first-timers, just a relatively inconsequential and slightly disappointing observation. You do realise Michael Ball was involved in the creation of this musical? Worked closely with Trevor Nunn, John Caird and the original creative team 34 years ago, and saw these characters being developed. I'm not sure you can accuse him of stealing his understudy's moves on his final night. As in he was in the original cast. But as he only left drama school the year or so before (according to Wiki) and had appeared in Godspell and Pirates of Penzance would he really of had that much 'involvement in the creation' particularly of a character he wasn't playing at the time? (Genuine question)

Just back home after a trip to the Liverpool Everyman this evening to see the second preview of the institution that is their annual rock & roll panto. This year it's 'Sleeping Beauty: Bohemian Napsody'! Really they deserve an award for that title alone! It's a brilliant cast of actor musicians they've assembled once again who treat us to a heavily adapted take on the well-known story and received a standing ovation from tonight's audience. I especially enjoyed the performances of Stephanie Hockley as Princess Rosa, Anna Soden as Fairy Poppins and the multi-roling Danny Burns who became increasingly irate about the number of characters he had to play and the speed of his costume changes required as the evening progressed! Musically we were treated to The Proclaimers, Ken Dodd (!), Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Queen to name just a few. It's two hours forty minutes of pure escapism that does everything it says on the tin but still feels as fresh as a daisy. So very tempted to see it again and also looking forward to a second helping of rock & roll panto, courtesy of Jack and the Beanstalk at Theatr Clwyd, next month. I'll be at Theatr Clwyd as usual, for Jack and the Beanstalk next month as well. Cant wait.

...but where the hell was Ken? Ken is spending some time at his brothers holiday flat in Southend. I hope for his sake he was. If he was back at Dawn's sisters house 'grouting her tiles' again, there'll be hell to pay!

..no point making a new version. Just get the old set and props out of storage. Easier! So are you saying you are guessing/assuming that this is the situation or that you know that this is happening?

Sorry, one more question about the broadcast. Do they go straight from act 1 to act 2 (as the Miss Saigon broadcast did, I tbink) or do they include the interval.

I really enjoyed the screening. Bonnie Langford, Clare Halse and Tom Lister in particular were fantastic. I thought it worked really well on the big screen; such an enjoyable treat on a gloomy Sunday afternoon. I don’t think I noticed so much when I saw it live but my friend pointed out how ridiculous/ sexist some of the song lyrics are- “Keep young and beautiful” for example. Is it meant to be satirical or it’s just of it’s time? Don’t 7 billion of us want to keep young and beautiful - I know I do! Sadly, both of those ships have sailed for me! I'm happy with keep breathing and mobile.

Did the show commence immediately at the start of the broadcast or are there interviews/trailers for the first few minutes?

Received 12 tines of chopped tomatoes and a sponsored cow for my birthday and there was me thinking no one would ever beat the year of the flavoured butter. *Rewrites birthday list for next week...*

Saw this tonight. My friends and I thought Micheal Ball was almost slurring his words, or was singing like he had false teeth in - sooo odd! Maybe he was biting his jaw down and this made the ssssss’s different? But we all turned round to each other at the same time thinking, what’s up with his voice?! I thought exactly the same at the Saturday matinee. A lot of 'sliding' up/down to words. I don't remember him doing that in Chess (which was the last time I saw him live)

I am seeing both shows on Saturday. I’m there for the matinee. This week was swapped around early on, Alfie doing 5 in a row to start the week then JOJ Friday and Saturday so I assume that is still the plan. I was happy with the swap as seen Alfie before I'm there for the matinee also.

I am confused by some of the criticism on this thread. This production is a concert and has been marketed as such. It's not billing itself as an acting masterclass. We all know Ball and Boe's style. If you buy tickets to hear them sing, which is essentially what this production is, them singing, then I can't see you have any cause for complaint when they do just that. If you want to see the production acted incredibly then head to Liverpool to see the touring production or to the theatre over the road when the fully staged version reopens. I’ll say it again. For me Killian Donnelly and Nic Greenshields were better than Alfie and Michael. Better than most of the pairings in it's lifetime probably.

Do we need a separate thread about people who are too Cr+p to Clap? It's not just rude it goes against the whole Theatre tradition and even the purpose of going to a live event. Disagree. Twice in over 30 years I've not applauded at the end of a performance because they were, to quote you, "too Cr+p to Clap." Many seem to have moved on to "standing ovation" as the primary recognition of a performance, but some of us are still traditionalists. A light round of applause, enthusiastic applause, a slow-handclap, or leaving the stage to the sound of thier own footsteps still works for us. Out of interest, which two?

Managed to bag myself an upper circle slip seat for the 2nd November matinee, which JOJ is doing fortunately. My bank holiday weekend is unlikely to get better frankly (unless someone decides to swap me a £200 stalls seat that was also available).

I am reading recipe's for trifle and I will go along with most of them (base of swiss roll, madeira cake or bought sponge fingers et al) BUT most definitely NO JELLY. The good lord gave us sherry soaked cake as a base for the confection and a good sturdy custard to hold the top together. (and god knows we all need our top holding together). Tinned Del Monte fruit cocktail always came next. A trifle is no place for the nutritious kind of fruit. The idea of a separate cream topping is one that is new to me but does raise the question of how you apply the toasted flaked almonds, glace cherries and angelica. But again I say unto thee, verily no jelly. It is the work of the devil. If you disagree with me, I suggest you address your remarks not to me but to my mother Mrs Mary Edwards of Wrexham. You will now need a medium though. She was a hard but kindly woman who I am happy to say beat the cream and me in equal measure, and as a result, I have learned to appreciate a trifle. You have been warned. All the best Mum's (and trifle makers) were from Wrexham.

Big fan of Louise's work, and love the new album...but I really dislike the arrangement of Beautiful. I'm not entirely sure why, I can't quite put my finger on it but it seriously grates. Anyway the rest of it is fantastic, and I can't wait for the gig in a few weeks Love her latest album (bit late to it sorry) particularly the version of She Used To Be Mine. Superb. She was Josh Groban's guest on his last 2 UK tours.

On Elaine Paige's radio 2 show today she paid tribute to Hal and got very emotional particularly talking about him coaching her through 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina'

Going to hijack this to take it a different direction. I have a soft spot for some choral music, in particular that of Eric Whitacre. Beautiful piece here, I wonder if (m)any are familiar with his work? I often wish there was such thing as Choral Musical Theatre. Something like this musically, with leads and a chorus integrated into a heartfelt story. Yes, there is Opera, but I'm not really to keen on the overly vibrato tone taken and I've yet to come across anything in this direction - unless someone here could point me in that direction? I first came across his music when I heard a fabulous brass band arrangement of 'Sleep' which was beautifully played by I think, Grimethorpe Band. More of his work has been similarly arranged. Started looking at You Tube and found more of his lovely choral works. Quite mesmerising on times!

For those who can't make the concerts, I've just spotted that Lea has released this live album recently - looks like the track listing is fairly similar to the setlists mentioned above. Thought some might find it enjoyable 😀 Thanks for this. Loving it!!

3) UK tour of Rent. Most of my theatre viewing had been very mainstream up to seeing this. Was blown away by the production at Theatr Clwyd and the back story.
2) Current UK tour of Les Mis. My go to musical over the last 25 years. The last 20 minutes of the 1st Act left me speechless.
1) Local AmDram production of 9 to 5a couple of years ago. It was my daughter's first performance with them as a trans woman after being a member of the youth section as a 16 year old boy. The sense of pride I had seeing her on stage doing what she loves with no fear surpassed any professional performances i have or ever will see. The society accepted her immediately and has helped her get back into society after a difficult couple of years for which I'm very grateful.

Just 2 musicals up to now, Phantom tour in Manchester and WWRY tour in Llandudno. Also Paul Carrack in concert in Llandudno which, if his show 2 years ago is anything to go by, will be brilliant.
Highly likely to do Jamie tour, again in Llandudno and hoping John Owen-Jones has another jaunt up North for one of his mini tours. Always a great night.
