Having now seen both 2:22 A Ghost Story and Opening Night, I know firmly which one I enjoyed more and would happily sit through again. A real shame ON is closing to make way for this tired old tale.

Could it go in to replace Opening Night? No because something else is going in and then Frank Skinner in August.

So there is a short filler going into Gielgud until end of July when Opening Night was meant to close and then something scheduled goes in for a run before Olivier opens December 14th. Any news on any of that? Ta! I have a hunch, and that's all it is, that Macbeth from the Donmar may go to the Gielgud in the Autumn.

Saw it tonight and absolutely loved it. So glad I caught it before it closes next month. It is a travesty that this is closing early, especially as the filler which is replacing it is so uninspiring.Have I missed something, what's the filler? To be announced next week apparently but don't get your hopes up!

I saw the matinee today and can only add to the chorus of superlatives being heaped on this show. It is simply astonishing. I have never done stage door before in my life, but I couldn't resist the chance to convey my thanks and appreciation of Sarah Snook's artistry to her when the opportunity presented itself, and to congratulate her for her well deserved Olivier win. She was utterly charming. What a tour de force!

The audience tonight was very full and it got a very good reception. I thought the music was great and not a weak link in the talented cast. Sheridan was terrific. Yes, it's bonkers in places but I was thoroughly entertained throughout.

I only just clocked that Will Close won Best Supporting Actor In A Play (for 'Dear England'), and that Luke Thompson and Zubin Varla (both for 'A Little Life') didn't. None of the footballer characters in 'Dear England' have much depth, or require much of an acting stretch. I think there was a likeability factor for Close and Thompson's characters as written, but I also thought Luke Thompson's performance had the biggest range of all the performances in 'A Little Life'. I'm really gutted for him. For me THAT was a performance that wove through the entire play with great demands. Perhaps other nominees who I didn't see were also as complex in performance. I just know that the collection of cute ticks required for Harry Kane in 'Dear England' were nothing in comparison. I agree with you. Will Close was brilliant in Dear England and gave a very entertaining turn, but for me Luke Thompson performance in A Little Life was more deserving of the Olivier. He and JN together were heartbreaking. I was even more moved whilst watching it a second time at the cinema.

The email I've received from the Bridge confirms the new extension is final and that the theatre will revert to its previous style next year.

I do find the world confusing. Most people on Twitter saying Waddingham best thing since sliced bread. Loads of people on here dragging her. Anyway. She’s clearly popular with TV producers! Well I like her a lot!

You're probably right but I wish they would show Best Supporting Actor and Actress. I really wanted to see Haydn Gwynne's son collecting her award.

Sorry but Hannah is just awful. Proof again that we just don’t know how to stage awards shows. Just hideously terrible. Her comment after Tom Francis did make me laugh though!

I'm not sure it is considering a return. I think all the recent promo was for the NT at Home.

Curious as to what will transfer from the current Broadway season. Of the musicals, I would say The Notebook and Tommy the most likely two to make it to the West End. The others I think it unlikely we see in their current productions, although The Outsiders would be nice to see transfer (and Lempicka, but with its current numbers I'd say very doubtful) For plays I imagine we could see Stereophonic at Hampstead theatre or somewhere similar. Isn't Stereophonic produced by Sonia Friedman? She'd probably take it straight into the West End.

I thought Being Alive meant 2:22. Tour finishes end of May If I was to have to make a bet, it would be this. Please, God, no. Enough. That would be too depressing. I hope they transfer The Deep Blue Sea from the Ustinov with Tamsin Greig.

Saddened by this news. Hopefully I can make it before it closes.
I wonder what they have chosen to replace it.

Amazed this hasn’t announced a closing date yet. There’s tumbleweed blowing through that box office. The theatre is exploring its options and inviting expressions of interest from filler shows, as soon as one is contracted it'll be announced as a oner. That's very disappointing to hear. I bet they'll struggle to get something decent in at short notice.

It wouldn’t really be fair to say who it was, he really is a very pleasant chap in real life and I had a lot of sympathy for his predicament but he was lucky social media hadn’t fully taken off. Say no more, Jan. 😯

Not many entries of celebrities being in a bad light. I live in the same street as a major family-friendly TV national treasure comedian noted for his calm and agreeable manner. One time years ago I saw him when his young child had laid down on their back right in the entrance to a big busy branch of Tescos and he was standing over them red-faced and screaming "GET UP ! GET UP ! GET UP !". Parents the world over will sympathise. He's got a nice house, worth about £6m. MMcI?

To be fair (not that anyone has to be fair with the DM or the Sun) they’re making it very clear that this isn’t Sheridan’s fault. They’re specifically saying or quoting people saying her performance is good. Slagging off the production/concept is exactly what most people here have been doing since it opened and indeed saying way more critical things than the press have said. Double standards? As for The Telegraph saying it should stay open after giving it two stars and calling it a “pretentious convoluted mess” is a bit rich. It’s behind the paywall so I can’t see his justification for it staying open, what’s his rationale? I'm not a fan of either publication, it is true, but the reality is that the combined readership is massive, and all the negative articles being churned out on a seemingly daily basis will harm the production's prospects. It's an avant garde show, so it was never going to be a massively commercial audience pleaser. The point I was trying to make is that, had a lesser known actress been the lead, there would not have been the endless articles saying how crap it is. I accept that Sheridan Smith's performance has garnered some pretty good notices.

The Mail and the Sun are hammering this production with all of their so called 'articles' and will probably lead to it closing early. All published because Sheridan Smith is in it. Total scumbags. P*sses me off.
At least Baz has wellied in with a bit of positivity:
And Dominic Cavendish recognises its worth in the West End landscape even if he didn't particularly care for it:

Why has the Menier lost its mojo? Everything seems to be papering and just not getting much buzz. It seems a long way off from its glory days of multiple transfers to the glittering West End.

Danny Sapani just announced to lead the cast of Between Riverside and Crazy, hot on the heels of King Lear at the Almeida.

I'm curious about the next sohoplace show. I imagine they will be announcing soon due to the limited run for Red Pitch, but nonetheless interested to see what they might do. Would love to see them take on another classic like Medea, recent shows have been more contemporary I would imagine an announcement will be coming very soon as Red Pitch is due to finish on 4th May. Also expecting some sort of announcement soon for the Harold Pinter.

This comment from the always thoughtful critic Marianka Swain, got me thinking. After describing misogny depicted, she starts off describing Myrtle then turns to Sheridan Smith: "It’s also troubling to see the company’s blithe disregard for their lead’s wellbeing, to the point where she’s lying catatonic on the floor. I hope that’s one area where life doesn’t imitate art, and that Smith has great support for this courageous – and personally cathartic – performance." I've sometimes seen shows where the 'Creatives' list includes a 'health and wellbeing' expert, or 'mental health advisor', but nothing is listed on the website for this show. I'm not suggesting this isn't taken care of in some way, for the whole cast to access (not just Smith), but it does feel like a show where signaling the care taken might be something an audience would like to know, to feel more receptive to watch. Swain's full review: www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/opening-night-review-gielgud-theatre Swain's comment is ill-informed. Wessex Grove are quite ahead of the curve in providing support, and proactively engage on their shows with Applause for Thought to support the company. Sheridan Smith said as much herself in her Front Row interview. Their company care is also endorsed in Nicola Hughes' Instagram post today.
