Seyi Omooba is suing Curve Theatre

Omooba said she had long since "forgiven" those she believed had sought to "ruin her theatre career", but added: "The theatre world needs to be told, loud and clear, that cancelling people for their Christian beliefs is illegal and wrong."

She went on: "From the outset, the theatre was offering to pay me off for terminating my acting contract, and I would not take that money. This case is about the freedom of Christians to hold our beliefs in the modern world, and about the truth of what has happened to me."


Andrea Williams, chief executive of the Christian Legal Centre, commented on plans to make a further appeal: "This is an open and shut case of discrimination against the Christian faith if there ever was one.

"Seyi was racially abused, received death threats and was hounded out of her career for a polite and temperate expression of what the Bible says about marriage. An unjust ruling that defends her sacking cannot stand and we will be taking this to the Court of Appeal."



Curve’s chief executive Chris Stafford and artistic director Nikolai Foster said:

"After two court cases, we had hoped all parties would be able to finally close the chapter on this matter and move forward.

"As always, we politely ask people to be kind and respectful across all social media when passing comment on the case."

Actor Seyi Omooba’s application to further appeal a decision over her sacking from a production of The Color Purple has been dismissed, bringing an end to a case that has been ongoing for five years.

Lord Justice Bean, in the Court of Appeal, refused Omooba’s application for permission to appeal on the grounds that the performer would likely not succeed in her case to overturn an initial employment tribunal appeal, which found her religious convictions were not the reason for her firing from a 2019 Leicester Curve production.
