The rights also went back up for amateur productions and a very good one happened recently at Mountview Academy, which usually signals the death of a transfer, much like what happened with Into The Woods. Maybe Sondheim transfers have a curse that need to be reversed...
As much as I'd love a Marianne Elliot reinvention, the chances are slim. Sunday is performed much the same almost everywhere, it is very controlled by the design of its original production possibly because of that legendary pro-shot and the specificity of the book. It should definitely have a new lease on life through a director like her.
I had the good fortune of snagging a front-row seat two days after Sunday opened on Broadway and Jake Gyllenhal and I was surprised by how moving and impactful it was for me. I had gone in pretty much not knowing much of the story and having heard a few of the songs here and there, but the cast was amazing, as was the orchestra which if I remember wasn't larger than 12 instruments. I was really disappointed for you folks across the pond that this never arrived. I can't compare productions and different directorial choices like many of you can, but Jake Gyllenhal really was incredible. The way he was able to connect to the audience playing the two different George's - there was a depth I didn't anticipate. Definitely was a special event billed as a "limited run" that seemed destined to find extended life. That it hasn't has perhaps made it seem even more special.
