Sunday in the Park with George w/ Andrew Garfield (Rumour)

Marianne Elliot is by far my favourite director. Company was great and Sunday should be even better!

I really want this to happen! I've seen the Original Broadway Cast and Chatelet production filmings of SUNDAY, but have never seen a production live. It is one of my favourite Sondheim's though. I find it so incredibly emotional, but have no idea why? I just find myself crying at the music, no matter how many times I've heard it. Garfield should be a good George, and Marianne Elliot did a fantastic job with COMPANY, so hoping she will do the same with SUNDAY. Hope they announce soon!

Yeah, my impression was all Sunday transfers are totally dead in the water because 1. Covid blew all plans up and 2. lacklustre-ish reception of it on Broadway. I thought this thread meant we had gotten an update on that rumour!

The rights also went back up for amateur productions and a very good one happened recently at Mountview Academy, which usually signals the death of a transfer, much like what happened with Into The Woods. Maybe Sondheim transfers have a curse that need to be reversed...

As much as I'd love a Marianne Elliot reinvention, the chances are slim. Sunday is performed much the same almost everywhere, it is very controlled by the design of its original production possibly because of that legendary pro-shot and the specificity of the book. It should definitely have a new lease on life through a director like her.

Is it not also controlled by the painting itself? The songs are placed in order to move the story move forward, and whilst we focus primarily on the relationship between George and Dot and THAT painting, but it also touches on Seurat's other works.

Also, wasn't the Menier Chocolate Factory production given a new lease of life, at the time, because of the digital imaging?

I get what you mean. I suppose what I meant in saying that was the very stereotypical Sunday many must think of. Like the backwall being the backdrop of the painting, everyone in position at the end and in costume keeping with the painting.

But that's very much because it is a musical adapting a literal artwork into something more so to stray from that is being unfaithful to the material.

I don't know how to "reinvent" Sunday but the 3D projection work truly focusing on that colour and light is the steps in the right direction and the Menier are totally at the forefront. Their Pacific Overtures I saw had some stunning and imaginative projection work in such a small space.

In Sunday, in that second act. I remember a production using a revolve to properly communicate the atmosphere of a party and explore the stuffy gallery. I believe it was that French production..? The second act is where I think a lot of productions truly breathe.

Sorry if I came off rude or blunt in that original post I was more focused on saying that this revival may be unlikely.

Yes it's hard to do any sort of reinvention as it's all about reproducing the painting essentially, but I did see a glorious production, in Chicago, a few hundred yards from the painting itself, and done as a traverse production with the audience both sides. A little confusing to see the painting from a different angle, and with little set, but oh it magnificent
