Fell in love with this show a little bit yesterday. That may well be because my sister and I took my niece to her first west end show at the age of 5, so seeing it through her eyes was magical. She hasn't stopped singing the songs and dancing today! She adored it! As did we. I thought the songs were excellent and have been singing along today too. Some gorgeous and sweet harmonies and melodies. The cast was incredible and Rufus' energy was perfect for Toad! It was also being filmed for a cinema release during the show.

Quite a pleasant way to spend an evening. More regional Crimbo show than Wendy's End and perhaps too many songs
3 stars

The problem is mainly the book, then the direction and finally the set (and maybe the costumes). There is a great show in there, but lay off the Fellowes!!!

Since seeing it last week I have become quite drawn to the CD. Some great songs are in there but also some quite dull ones. I was amazed at how transfixed all the kiddies were, so it must be doing something right

Now they're just being cruel...on an International level. Is it that bad? From the reviews here I was put off from a theatre visit, but think I'd do a cinema trip out of interest.

I assume you've seen The Stage @theatremonkey.com. They finally acknowledge their figures are skewed by the closure of upper levels. They must have read our earlier posts. Nice to know we have influence over the industry bible!!!

As per my post I thought it was inoffensive and okay. Some were making it out to be a disaster but to me it was nowhere near that. I think you'll enjoy the cinema trip!

I liked it, not world changing but nice enough. It was a shame seeing it in a half empty Palladium on a Saturday night as some of the atmosphere was lost.

I have just got back from watching this at my local cinema, and thought it was a very enjoyable few hours.
Yes, the piece is not going to set the world alight. It is a very gentle story, and sometimes it meanders somewhat so that you wonder where it is going (particularly in the first act), but it is engaging and I certainly was never bored.
I thought that there was some very fine music in the show (albeit a lot of it) with some truly gorgeous orchestrations. It was nice to see from the end credits that real instruments were used, and not synthesised sounds. You could certainly hear the difference in quality! “A Friend is Still A Friend” and some of the other ballads were particular standouts. Whilst I have always admired Stiles and Drewe, I have found their music to be hit and miss. I was not a fan of BETTY BLUE EYES, the last effort that I saw of theirs.
The score was not sung well all the time (I’m looking at you Denise Welch), but performances were strong, particularly from Rufus Hound who gave a very energic and charasmatic performance as Toad. I also liked the sets and lighting.
I felt that it was filmed well, and managed to capture an essence of the atmosphere that you would have got in the theatre. Well worth a look, and I hope it is released either on Blu-ray or digitally soon.

Anyone else think 'Spring' - the opener - reminded them of 'At the end of the Day' from Les Mis much?

Anyone else think 'Spring' - the opener - reminded them of 'At the end of the Day' from Les Mis much? Apart from it being a rhythmic 12/8 in a minor key, I don’t find many similarities - especially not melodic.

Anyone else think 'Spring' - the opener - reminded them of 'At the end of the Day' from Les Mis much? I think it sounds a lot like There Will Be Sun from Groundhog Day I don’t see too much similarity between these two either. One is a driving, rhythmic 12/8 in a minor key, the other a relaxed 6/8 in a major key. I guess the similarities are common time, sustained folky melodies contrasting with the driving rhythms, and orchestrally, guitars and strings. They’re also in a similar place lyrically, of course.

Maybe it is just the time signature that does it, like you say there isnt a great deal harmonically similar, but everytime I hear Spring I hear AAEOTD on top in my head.

I caught the showing at Showcase Southampton today (after seeing the show live in Southampton and London). The switched it to a smaller screen meaning I didn't get the seat I carefully chose over a week ago and got one much further to the side. It took a lot of agro to get it switched to another seat (still worse than my original choice but better than what I was given). I ended up going in after the trailers had already started and someone had used my chair as a bag shelf! Anyway on to the show. I loved seeing the show again and thought it was really well filmed, I loved the shots from the fly tower (I think that's the right way to describe it) and how it was all put together. The audio was very slightly out of sync, I'm not sure if it was all the time or it came and went but in some shots it was very noticeable and sometimes rather off-putting (I didn't mention it to the cinema as after coming to the middle of the row late I didn't want to have to go out and in again and after the response I had at the ticket issue I didn't expect a good outcome either!)
