Thing is, Baz's sources are incredibly reliable and although some of the news he's given us has not come to pass (he announced Cush Jumbo in the Donmar's Saint Joan, for instance), he is never actively wrong. But let's be real, he's a fairly well-known reporter of theatrical news; anything he's sharing is clearly something that he has been told by an official source and is sharing at a time when he is allowed (have you never noticed how many of his scoops are released at 11:30pm the night before the official announcement? They can't *all* be scrambling to announce it officially once the cat is out of the bag), he's not discreetly loitering in backgrounds and chatting with indiscreet people and listening out for secrets that he then rushes to share. I love getting the news a little early, Baz is a reliable source, but you're mad if you think he's some kind of elite investigative theatre journalist. Mr B though, I haven't a clue who he is outside the context of this board, but he's a pretty valued member of this community and most of his news does prove itself genuine in time. Sure, okay, disbelieve him if you absolutely must, but there's really no need to be a douche about it. And yeah, things fall through! Cate Blanchett in All About Eve, anyone?

@baemax - wouldn't it be great if Baz and Barnaby turned out to be one and the same?

I would genuinely love that - Baz is his respectable public face where he plays nice with embargos, Barnaby is his secret mischief-maker who's doing it for the joy of it.

I like that hypothesis. It's a shame there's no evidence to support it, but I want it to be true.

TOTALY off topic (although I could argue the entire thread is off topic as this production doesn't appear to be happening after 21 pages of excited speculation) but I cannot forget the thrill of seeing HUGE stars appear on the London stage when it was fashionable to bring film stars over for a limited engagement (usually in a play) in London's glittering WE.
It really didn't matter what they were in and some were more successful in their roles than others but I just remember sitting there and thinking OMG that's Jack Lemmon, Elizabeth Taylor, Dustin Hoffman, Lauren Bacall etc.
Bette Midler would have caused such a stir (back on topic!) but now we are reduced to someone off Game of Thrones - it just does not quite have the same appeal.
Couldn't a savvy producer persuade Meryl Streep to do a play for 3 months?

That producer back in the day was the wonderful Duncan Weldon, who now, alas, is very ill - he also brought over Dustin Hoffman to play Shylock, Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason to do Neil Simon etc etc

So it's a no then?
Have to say, I'm quite disappointed as it was the only thing I was looking forward to this year.
I'm also surprised the thread was allowed to stay open for so long, and for it to then to create so much false hope and speculation. I remember a thread last year that said the show was going into The Palladium, that thread was gone within a couple of hours, I don't really see the difference between the two of them, and why this one has been allowed to run like this for so long with no confirmation at all.

Anita Dobson has already played Dolly in a tour in 2008 which I saw in Eastbourne of all places. It was, how shall I say, not her finest hour (or two)! Darren Day played Cornelius - need I say more? Saw this tour at the Cliffs, picked up 3 last minute front row seats for a midweek evening. Got there and we were literally the only ones in - odd night!

This entire forum is based on false hope and speculation. I explained yesterday why this thread was allowed to remain so please read back a couple of pages. It’s the red text.

This entire forum is based on false hope and speculation. I explained yesterday why this thread was allowed to remain so please read back a couple of pages. It’s the red text. I think the issue with it is there has been several threads before that have been removed because they are "speculation" threads, but this one hasn't been removed when it has been confirmed it's not happening despite the speculation.

Previous threads were not removed. They were merged into the existing broadway thread because they were obviously speculation. This one was allowed because Mr B isn’t usually so absolutely definite that he starts a thread. He is a long standing member here and has been correct many times before. We took it at face value as he apparently did. Sometimes things go wrong.
Do you all want us to just shut down these discussions?

Even advanced plans sometimes fall apart.

Seriously though, if someone would like to give me a rule book to follow about when speculation should and shouldn’t be removed, plesse do that and I’ll share it with the admin team. Until then we do our best. I’m really really sorry if anyone’s hopes and dreams got shattered but... you’ll be fine.

If we removed speculation then the Wicked thread would be about five posts long.

That's different. This thread is about a production that doesn't exist. I don't understand the logic of having speculative productions removed in the past but this one is allowed to stay? That doesn't make sense to me.

That's different. This thread is about a production that doesn't exist. Whereas the Wicked thread is about a production the majority of the board wishes didn't exist

I mean,it's not a big deal, and I wasn't wanting to criticise admin or anything.
It's just the other thread disappeared as there was no confirmation and this one ran on and on, and still is (although I have no issue with it) even though it seems as if it's not happening at all.

Indeed we will. I was one who would have looked forward to seeing Miss Midler, but I was dubious anyway and I indeed will be fine. No one has died. It is not a disaster!

Witht he greatest respect and without wanting to seem pedantic the earlier threads didn’t disappear, they were moved into the Dolly thread in the International section.
