I've heard good things about the B Rep's interactive short thing "Seance." Probably the best way to go to make theatre scary. Of course some people find interactive theatre itself scary!

Good question. I have seen 'The Woman in Black' (front end row with the smoke machine right in my face - avoid!) and I did find it (enjoyably) frightening. I agree with those who find psychological creep more frightening than gore.
But beyond that? Hmm.
I've seen things that are not horror, but I found disturbing to various degrees ('Passion', 'Ada/Ava', and 'Thrill Me: Leopold and Loeb' spring to mind. I really enjoyed all three).
I've also seen horror shows that I've enjoyed but have't scared me ('Sweeney Todd', 'Little Shop of Horrors', albeit the latter is a spoof).
Carrie is obviously a horror. But, strangely, whilst I hated the film (which did scare me), I loved the musical (which didn't). I felt the film was more of a stock horror, whereas the show was almost more like a tragedy. I loved the show and found it disturbing in places (esp scenes with Carrie and her mother), but I didn't feel terror.
Now I come to think of it, I can't think of any shows that really fit your requirements. But I'm not a huge horror lover in general, so wouldn't be likely to go to American Psycho or anything.

"Séance" was terrifying for me, and I love watching horror films! I've never been to anything like that before, I thought it was very well put together and seriously contemplated leaving partway through even though it's only 15 minutes long. My nerves!
I mentioned in the other thread that "The Exorcist" is quite good, but more atmospheric than scary. I enjoyed the "American Psycho" musical but it wasn't really scary - they didn't even use gore, just red lighting.
I have a vague memory of seeing Ira Levin's "Veronica's Room" a long while back, but I can't remember if it was horror or suspense. I also saw a production of Stephen King's "Misery" which worked pretty well.
Like many have already said, it depends on the individual - I found Ghost Stories to be scary even though many have already commented that they didn't.
Having said all that, I wasn't brave enough to try Viva Forever...!

I saw Woman in Black years ago and tho it didnt exactly scare me,it is atmospheric and cleverly done. Im off to Exorcist in Birmingham Friday.
