That sounds a little like AirBerlin... They almost ruined my USA vacation in May. But they went bankrupt yesterday. Can't say I care...  I just did a serious calculation because I just couldn't get the idea of attending the last show out of my head. I came up with way more than 1000€ for a weekend trip (with 3 shows, flights, Airbnb, transport and food), so that's a clear no go for me... Oh well. So I really hope it won't take too long to bring the show back to the uk. It will be easier for me to visit for a weekend and a lot cheaper.  |

Thanks both- I think it's a case of weighing the initial savings against the higher price of the others. I'm considering using KLM or Aer Lingus anyway to fly from Cardiff and save myself the Heathrow trek anyway. I flew to the US with KLM back in May (via Amsterdam, I assume this would be the same for you too) and they were great  |

From Cardiff it'd be easier to go via Dublin, wouldn't it? You can usually pre-clear US immigration in Dublin.
Not sure if you've ever collected Avios, Emi, but if you have some then Dublin to New York is 26000 avios plus £183 in tax for economy, and you can hop from Cardiff to Dublin relatively cheaply on Flybe.

How are they as an airline? I'm considering them for my next trip but don't know anyone who has used them... Used them into Gatwick coming back from last NYC trip and they were great - I picked the option which included baggage and meals and it still worked out cheapest. New Dreamliner plane, perfectly adequate entertainment for an overnight flight and flight was on time, no problems. Definitely worth considering. I did exactly the same for my last visit in April. I genuinely couldn't fault them and I'd certainly use them again. |

I wonder if visitor numbers to the US being down has had an effect? You'd normally expect a recognisable show name to pull the tourists, even if the Broadway afficiandos were going for Dear Evan Hansen. Is it really a recognisable name though? The film was released 24 years ago and there's a huge audience who would have no idea about it (I have a feeling it's one of those films that critics think of as a classic but the average person wouldn't). Even Andy Karl admitted that there were lots of people he met who'd seen the show (and loved it) but had never heard of or seen the film. He also didn't think the audiences in New York or London were that different. Nearly everyone I've talked to at work or socially has seen it, even if it hadn't been since they were a kid. No one had not heard of it. (Almost everyone at work is under 30, for what it's worth.) |

I'm going to the final show. I was going to New York that day anyway but was going to see something else. Just booked a ticket for the final GHD show because I was at the last Old Vic performance and I'm a completist who loves this show so much!

The Phoenix seems like the only viable option for Groundhog Day as Strictly Ballroom has the Piccadilly and Tina's most likely for the Aldwych

I was at the last show yesterday. So glad I went and it was such a treat to see the show and hear the music live again. There were standing O's after Nobody Cares, Hope and if I Had My Time Again... and at the end obviously, the cast had a snow fight on stage at the end. It was all pretty emotional, lots of people really sobbing at the end. This show means a lot to a small group of people here.
Andy Karl's performance has got really slick and strong and funnier. It's fairly similar to the Old Vic version music wise, large amounts of staging is the same but there are some differences, Hope has an extra sequence and If I had My Time Again is a bit more static which I felt was a shame, though the Twirl a Whirl sequence is lovely.
I feel like the London production felt a lot more characterful and quirky. It feels like it's all been flattened a bit for Broadway (possibly to make it appeal more broadly) but I loved the show in London because of its quirkiness and real sense of character. If it comes back to London I hope it can bring that sense back with it because that really is the magic that made it feel so alive in London.
I'm so glad I went, the audience were quite mad and loved the show, it was just quite sad for everyone there because it was a room full of people who dearly love the show.

Aw I'm glad you were there charliec and have reported back. I got a bit emotional at Andy Karl's instagram post so I imagine I'd have been a MESS if I was there. If nothing else it's nice to hear it went out with an audience who loved the old 'Hog. Fingers crossed it makes it's way back 'home' where there's an audience who loves it. |

I want to know what happened to all the cute Groundhogs on the souvenir stand. Were they released into the wild or New York sewer system? Simply 86'd and left to ring handbells dressed as Santa on the corner? Packed in crates for export to London when the show moves again? Or quietly taken downstream on the Hudson with a sack and a brick? We need to know. I will give them all a good home. I will be crazy-Groundhog-Lady. |

Not a done deal, show needs work but if it goes well Groundhog Day will have to go elsewhere. |
