So glad that this wasn't snubbed with the Tony noms, even if there is still a chance it might not win any. But I hope it will give this show the boost it needs, I'd hate to see them announce closure any time soon like American Psycho did last year.

If this gets more time than Rocky then it's already a win for Three-time Nominee Andy Karl.

Andy Karl rackin' them awards up! He just won the Outer Critics Award for Actor in a Musical. Bear in mind he wasn't up against Ben Platt as he was considered for the Off-Broadway run of Dear Evan Hansen for most awards bar the Tonys, it makes Andy the favourite to win the Drama Desk and a potential spoiler for the Tony, though it will go to Ben. If anyone beats Ben, it will be Andy!

I saw this last weekend, and what a powerhouse Andy Karl is (and really, that entire cast). I saw him in Jersey Boys and Rocky and am so glad he's able to shine so brightly in this show. And speak in a standard American accent this time. Ha. I enjoyed that the musical takes a darker, existential-crisis-prompting turn moreso than the film. In the film, you laugh at and watch Bill Murray with intrigue -- on stage, you laugh at and then go along with Andy Karl's suffering. It made me afraid to go to sleep that night, but at least I'd be seeing Groundhog Day again over and over?! Sorry if a lot of this has been rehashed; I purposely stayed away from most of this thread before I realized I'd be seeing it.

The positive things said about this show, the better!

To really freak yourself out, make a clip of the Groundhog radio jingle and use it as your alarm in the morning. 😳

Ha! That is CRUEL and also, I guess they couldn't get the rights from Sonny & Cher? Or they didn't want to bother?

Ha! That is CRUEL and also, I guess they couldn't get the rights from Sonny & Cher? Or they didn't want to bother? In this interview Danny Rubin says that it didn't matter what the song was just as long as it was obnoxious to Phil and it has to be repeated a lot. Also it would be unfair to Tim Minchin's music as it doesn't fit in with his style. (skip to the final question at 27:20)

I'd wait until after the Tony Awards. I bet all their resources and focus is on the awards season in the US.

To be honest, it is such a strong season on Broadway, I am not expecting much (if anything!) for Groundhog sadly. It's best chance is Andy Karl, which I have a very strange feeling is gonna happen. He got stellar reviews, a lot of press about his injury and carrying on, I just have a strange feeling he is gonna win. But other than that it won't win Musical. It won't win Book or Score sadly either. Director, again is a tough category. Set is a lock for Comet. I could see a chance at Choreography, but its a tight race.

I think Groundhog's only chance is Andy Karl. Director and choreography will go to Comet. They released this profile of Ben Platt today in the New York Times: www.nytimes.com/2017/05/10/theater/how-ben-platt-beame-the-toast-of-broadway-dear-evan-hansen-tony-awards.htmlIt's VERY sympathetic and 'look at how hard he's working at such a young age' etc. I could see this either working in Ben's favour or against it. I suspect some voters will eat it all up and others will think 'well Andy Karl has an injury and is just getting on with it'. Very interesting.

Just how long IS this article? I like Ben, I thought he was terrific, and I think the show is great. I also follow the show on Facebook, and watch or read most of what they post. I also saw the Theatre Talk episode with Ben and his cast mates. But this article was way too long and overly indulgent. If I lost interest by the 5th scroll down the screen, I can' imagine who this is targeted to but a loyal fan base? Yes, he's remarkable and truly young for a bit show like this, but casting that aside, the same article could have been written about Alice Riley in Next to Normal. If he's too young for a role this big, then surely Glenn Close also deserves this kind of accolade for being 70 and playing a role like THAT.
I don't know..the show's PR people are obviously doing well and chugging out a lot, but this seems to be slightly over campaigning for him.

To gobble is to eat something hurriedly and noisily, therefore one can be a "gobbler". And knob is a British slang term for penis. I've always found it vaguely funny and now we all know the level at which my humour starts!

And generally do in the film/musical too. Knob is just a funny word.
Sorry Americans if we don't conform to your high levels of humour
Also I was the only one in the office who knew the answer....

Its actually quite remarkable what the reviews and seemingly Tony nominations are doing for this show. Since opening, it has steadily been rising evey single in gross, not dipping once bar around the time Andy was ill, but if it continues the way it is going, within the next two weeks it will join the $1 million dollar club, having made $926,867.65 this week compared to $823,511.85... a rise of over $100,000 in just the one week!

I saw the matinee yesterday (Sunday) and it looked to be sold out. It wasn't on TKTS when I checked at 11am. Glad it has picked up.

I'm glad for the show. (Ok, maybe a little bit selfishly annoyed that I'll probably now have to get up early and dayseat for a reasonably priced ticket in August instead of swinging by TKTS.)
