I finally managed to catch the new cast. Lily (new to me as I saw Eve last time) is such a beautiful, mature Christine, she plays it really confidently (compared to eve who was very nervous last time) and her voice is crystal clear. Dean looks perfect as the phantom but I think I've been spoilt by seeing James Gant. Deans voice didn't give me any of the power or the chills I wanted. Acting was ok, just nothing blew me away. I hope he grows into it, otherwise it will be a very boring show this year. Joe as Raoul is good, not my favourite, not my worst. Really nice to look at!! Joanna Ampil. Oh dear. I was so excited to see her. Her voice is not an opera singers voice, but I didnt mind that. But there was no comedy. It was like she thought she was playing lady Macbeth. It's Carlotta, there has to be humour, no? Adam Linstead IS Andre! Martin Ball is the best Firmin I've ever seen. Helen Hobson was like a totally different actress to the woman I saw in come from Away, amazing transformation. David as Piangi has become so much funnier than when I last saw him although he must have been ill because some of his notes were a bit weak. And Milly, the new meg is really really young looking which I think is perfect. Other comments are that there is loads of Asian representation which I noticed and enjoyed. There were a couple of fluffed lines which made me giggl. The tempos are still way too fast. It's like the conductor wants to go home! And the sound wasn't the best either, I noticed that at the book of Mormon last month too though. Maybe it's my ears! I enjoyed it though, but might wait until an understudy for Carlotta and the Phantom are on! I just watched the Phantom of the Opera last night casted by Dean and Lily. Honestly I was disappointed by Dean’s performance and the lesser emphasis put on the singing by the Phantom. A lot of boring scenes and visuals now. I was so carried away when I watched John Owen Jones’s performance back in Oct 2015 and I still remember clearly how much I was obsessed by his voice in my mind for a couple of days after the show! Does anyone know any good ones taking the title role of the Phantom of the Opera nowsdays, somewhere in the world?

I saw the Saturday matinee performance of Phantom last weekend and I have to say that it was the first time in a while that I've thoroughly enjoyed watching the show. I counted that I've seen around 7 Phantoms over the years but I have to say that Dean Chisnall is up there with my favourites. Everyone has their own expectations of what Phantom should be, as do the actors, but I would say if I had to describe it that Dean plays an emotional Phantom rather than an evil, flawed or angry Phantom. The end scene had me in tears and his voice was spectacular. Lily was heavenly compared to the last few Christine's I've seen and we were lucky to have Mikey Colbourne as Raoul, who also turned out to be one of my favourites (would love to see him as Phantom).
One interesting point was that when I visited the show last year the brochure my daughter purchased had the previous cast in it, so we took it back and got a refund. On Saturday the brochure also had the previous cast (the one we wanted but didn't get last year!). How long do they usually take to catch up as I'd love to buy one with the cast I actually saw this time!

For someone heartbroken from the news of the changes to the show with it’s closure, I absolutely loved what I saw this weekend. The show is in superb quality right now I would say. The sound was great! Much better and louder than other long running shows. Great cast, christines voice was mesmerizing and the orchestra sounded wonderful, even if smaller. I even loved that new horse set piece. Such a beautiful show still.

The 2023-2024 brochure was released around February or March this year so around half way through the cast contract. Sometimes they come out sooner but I imagine it depends on how many pictures they need to change inside based on how many people left/joined.
