The old Doyly Carte production was delightful. The first time I saw Butteriss was him playing Marcellinai in Figaro which hedid very well without going over the top. Sadly the company closed several years before I was born so I obviously never saw any of their productions.
Marcellina? Crikey! That must have been an odd production if Marcellina was played in drag.
It wasn’t odd at all. Apart from Butteriss pitching his voice high it was a very good straightforward production by a wonderful group called the Opera Factory. No other parts had a gender change. Marcellina was played as in any conventional production.

They adapted that production for TV but there Butteriss played Basilio which makes a bit more sense.
The whole TV version is on YouTube. Sung in English with dialogue rather than recit. Stands up pretty well

Huge thanks to @talisman for alerting me to this gem of a production.
It looked and sounded so good. the entire cast all appeared to be having a blast and had so much energy.
Three separate sets for each act, all with a staircase centre stage aka social climbing.
The now mandatory inclusion of the Thunder and lightning polka is towards the end of 2nd act.
My friend was a bit down but this cheered her up massively.
Totally recommend.
