Thank you, that's helpful. I was to get the most out of my night since I sold my kidney to pay for the ticket.

OK, so I have managed to avoid knowing anything about this show for as long as it's been running, know the basic storyline but haven't heard any of the music. I am one of these people who dig in their heels when everyone tells me I have to go see something. Anyhoooo, my curiosity has finally got the better of me and I've booked a ticket for Aug. Here's my question - am I better going into in with fresh ears or should I listen to the music first? Any thoughts? I'd read a synopsis, but I saw it before the cast recording even came out and didn't bother listening to any clips (unofficial or otherwise) beforehand, and I was fine. Just know that it's textually very dense, so you can't really zone out.

Great, thank you. I'm a bit of an American history nerd so I will definitely make sure I've got the book clear in my head before I go.

I went in having read the Wikipedia articles on the musical and the main protagonists and watched the Tony Awards performance and I was fine. Yes, you probably pick up a few more lyrics if you're already familiar with the songs, but I'm glad I hadn't listened to them beforehand as I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by how the songs moved the story along.

Here's my question - am I better going into in with fresh ears or should I listen to the music first? Any thoughts? Yes the lyrics are busy, but for me the whole experience was helped by not hearing a good chunk of the score. I heard; Alexander Hamilton, My Shot and Helpless- all through chance and not choice! I think if I went in knowing the score and therefore the story, I wouldn't have been so overwhelmed in Act 2 and on such a buzz when leaving. Although controversial, I would go in blind. Trust me. It'll be worth it- my mother went in knowing NOTHING and left crying, as did my first cousin when I took him! It's chunky, but not hard to follow. I instantly binge listened to the recording afterward, then fully appreciated the genius, then got a cheap return ticket a few months later. If you're going to listen to anything I'd say; Alexander Hamilton and My Shot just to get a taste. All the rest of the songs are amazing, but even better when live! If I were you I'd steer very clear of act 2. The most happens in this act, and it packs an emotional punch. When it's unknown what is coming, it hits even harder! Seeing and hearing it for the first time all at once makes for an unforgettable evening! (As you can tell I didn't listen first- despite being begged to!)

Awww thank you guys for all the advice. Despite actively avoiding the show for so long I'm actually quite looking forward to it now, I'm intrigued to see if it lives up to the hype.

Saw it yesterday. The full main cast was on and it was really a great performance. I've booked to see it again later in the year

I finally saw this last week (after moving abroad last year etc.) and I really enjoyed it. Just to say an enormous fan of In The Heights.
First of all, it works as a whole piece of theatre better than In The Heights. However, there were just no stand out songs for me. It flows brilliantly though, and tells the story amazingly (with one excruciating cheesy bit - unless that’s true, if so; I apologise).
The cast were fantastic (head to my Instagram to see who I saw); the staging was brilliant; the lighting, exceptional.
There’s just something that didn’t click 100% for me and I think it was the music. I can’t imagine playing those songs on endless repeat like I did with In The Heights (and many other musicals). I think when it comes to musicals, the music makes or breaks it for me. There is nothing broken about this musical but I could only give it 4-4.5 stars.

When will the tickets for the Christmas holidays be released? Is this date published somewhere? Will there be a performance on Sundays?

I have a ticket to see this in October - is it worth knowing the story beforehand or is it better to go in knowing nothing? And how's the view from the front of the grand circle?

Oh come on! It’s totally at odds with the style and tone of everything that has gone before. Whacky supernatural coda to all of the funky fabulousness that went before...

Well I’ll have tears in my eyes at the line “I can’t wait to see you again, it’s only a matter of time” - but the way Philippa Soo did her gasp was very subtle so I thought it was beautiful. But again I was sobbing so I think I was in the zone for a whacky supernatural coda. More than willing to acknowledge if “heavy handed” it could be a bit cringe. Maybe

Saw the show last night. Three understudies on. Waylon Jacobs was on as King George and he wasn't very good, nice voice but his comic timing was a bit off and he wasn't very funny. Aaron Lee Lambert played Mulligan/Madison, not bad but nowhere near as good as Tarinn Callender. I prefer Lambert as George Washington, not convinced by his Mulligan/Madison. Stephenson Ardern-Sodje was on as Hamilton, he did a decent enough job but looks far too young especially in part 2, not very believable as Hamilton in his later years.
The highlights for me were Rachelle Ann Go, Jason Pennycooke and Cleve September. They were excellent.
The sound was dreadful, don't know what the problem was but at times it was impossible to hear the lyrics. Difficult to know what was going on unless you knew the story in advance.

Completely agree on the difficulty to understand what was happening. I’m hoping a second visit will be more enjoyable now that I’ve read up on the story.

Well, I've seen the show a few times now. Sometimes the sound has been good and the lyrics can be heard clearly. On Tuesday however the sound was appalling. Some performers have very poor enunciation anyway, I can never fully understand what Allyson Ava Brown sings, but on Tuesday the balance was so bad that most of the time the orchestra drowned the voices of he performers.
I now have to book to see Jamael Westman once more before he leaves in November. Really hope they sort the sound problems

Oh no!!! I'm seeing this for the first time tonight (Thu) and am hoping the sound (and diction) is spot on so I know what the heck is going on. Yikes! Maybe I will read the synopsis on Wiki.

Hopefully the sound will be better when you go, but yes, I would advice you to read the synopsis on Wikipedia just in case. Enjoy!
Hope Jamael Westman is back, he really is excellent.

I've also seen the show before and the sound has been fine, but for some reason there's been a couple of occasions in which it has been difficult to hear the words. It was particularly bad on Tuesday, the music was really drowning the words.
