You do indeed only get printed tickets if there is a problem. I had my card blocked due to the Ticketmaster hack and only remembered it was the same one I used when I got to the theatre, a few questions at the box office and I got a big ticket. Unsure if I should change it with Ticketmaster before my next trip

I was there 45 minutes before last Saturday's matinee, and the line went right back to opposite the Cardinal Place tube exit. It took 10 minutes, moving forward very quickly, to get into the foyer. In the line, they checked (twice) your entire party was assembled. Nearer the doors, they asked for the booking confirmation (didn't do that last time) but not photo I.D. Bag check at the door, then ticket stubs printed in seconds just inside the door. You do indeed only get printed tickets if there is a problem. I was told that hard printed ticket are only for premium ticket holders. My theatre partner commented that that was offensive to the general population and those "regular" ticket holder that get a sales receipt for a ticket should complain and file a legal claim of discrimination against the producers.

How is that offensive? That people who pay a premium price get a more premium experience than people who don't? I mean, aside from the fact that the very existence of premium tickets is a whole problematic issue in itself? I do think your theatre partner should complain and file a legal claim of discrimination against the producers though, as long as someone has a video camera on when the lawyers laugh them out of the office.

I got a flight home from Chicago yesterday. I'm thinking of filing a legal claim against the airline because the people in first class got a crayfish salad followed by a ribeye steak and I got bland soggy pasta.

I know you're just trying to be humorous. Or at least I would hope so. I save all my tickets and in the two last year have been able to write about my forty years of theatergoing only because I had these simple paper tickets. In New York and around the US we also get free programs which have help create a rich and thrilling narrative. Premium seats provide a "better" theater-going experience. First and foremost, location. Mac sold tickets to Miss Saigon in NY in 1991 for $100 in the front mezzanine as there were 200 great seats to view a special effect of a helicopter. Crooked Garth provide private lounge area and restrooms for a premium price when he opened his theatre on 42nd Street with Ragtime. Tickets are offered for Starlight Express in Bochum that are laminated lanyards for an addition cost. A 50/50 style ticket receipt at Hamilton when you're paying above 40 quid is what I'd refer to as cheap. Better to show a SQR code on your phone as many do when we see Frozen on Broadway. SQR codes can contain video and special content for after show enjoyment as well as well as a message from the show.

This still doesn't explain how "not being given a cardboard ticket" can unironically be described as "offensive" or "discriminatory". Man, and they think it's the *millennials* who are quick to be offended by the most inconsequential things...

I've got a "proper" ticket for Hamilton - it didn't make the show any better or worse it has to be said.
Lordy I've even gone to some shows with a self printed A4 sheet of paper that was my ticket - I just don't know how I coped!!

Also I'm pretty sure the show I saw later that same day didn't even *have* tickets, 'cos now I think about it I don't remember them actually giving me anything when they ticked my name off the list.....
Also, my tickets for Hamilton on Broadway were self-printed sheets of A4 paper from Ticketmaster! At least the West End production had nice little branded slips of paper that would fit neatly into a scrapbook if I were still scrapbooking my every theatre trip.

Whilst I do like physical tickets, I am not too fussed if I don't get one, but I have a few friends that do have scrapbooks and they absolutely hate it when they don't get physical tickets at shows and will always pay extra if the option is a free print at home ticket/ticket on your phone or a 'proper' ticket printed by the theatre. And they really don't like the Hamilton tickets. LOL
So whilst I agree it's definitely not discriminating or offensive when there aren't 'proper' tickets, I also understand how for some people that can be very frustrating. The same way that some people always buy a programme whatever they see, because they like to have it for their collection. So yes, a proper ticket doesn't affect the show but it does affect the 'souvenir' that they get to take away from it.
But I also understand how with Hamilton's ticket system, this is the quickest way to get people through the door and have the tickets printed, while keeping the touts out.
I really don't understand why they haven't introduced that model for Hamilton Broadway yet, unless they get a nice cut from the Ticketmaster resell option. :-)

I got a "proper" ticket as I'd got a new card in the time between booking and the actual performance.
I was scanned on the door but the ticket didn't work - she checked my ID number, as I brought along a printed copy of the confirmation, then asked if I'd had a new card. When I said yes, it had changed over 3 months ago she pointed me to the box office who gave me a nice lovely "proper" ticket.
This also allowed me to see the cast board in the main foyer.

This makes me curious to see how there going to do the ticket system when the show tours in a few years time as most theatres like the wales millenium centre allow u to select your seat. Makes me think will they do it this way or start introducing the paperless ticket system when the show goes on tour.

That would be helpful. I'm not calling anyone dishonest. I can only go off what I know and that is we had premium seats and a stub style tickets. If you look on ticketmaster you will see numerous people who have stub style tickets and it will say pstalls or proyal so these people also have premium seats. Perhaps the person who told you was getting confused and meant the people who have the VIP packages get proper tickets? Either way it doesn't really matter I was just trying to clarify that what you were told was incorrect.

"Getting"? I think it was ridiculous right from the moment someone genuinely suggested that receiving a piece of paper instead of a piece of card counted as actual discrimination that could legitimately be handled by a lawsuit.

I would have loved a big ticket and maybe had a little moan about it, but I certainly don’t feel entitled to one or feel that I have been wronged in some way. Peoples levels of entitlement are off the scale at the moment...what is wrong with the world?
