It’s true, sales beyond Xmas / New Year are pretty terrible. This will need raves if it’s to last in that barn Not necessarily. WE WILL ROCK YOU was murdered by the critics and ran at The Dominion for over a decade. Yes, it had Queen's catalogue but TDWP was/is an iconic film that will will also prove quite a draw, especially to the hen parties (yuck). The days of huge advance sales have mostly gone unless something is a megahit which is rare. The model has changed in terms of how and when people book so I don't think they need to be too worried.

If a review is published on a certain day of the week does it have more impact compared a another? Im sure a psychological study, disertation or fag packet equation exists Big shows sim for a Thursday or Friday opening to appear in the weekend papers/online at the weekend, when people have more time to take note of such things, so a Friday release makes sense in that respect. Why they’ve dragged out the embargo though? Maybe if they are bad, they’ll have had a week of extra sales from people buying for next year?

It was always going to be sh*te on stage
I wonder why they didn’t make it a credible affair
And have costumes actually designed by Miuccia etc
Fashion brands have done this for plenty of shows and operas and even partnered with shows or sponsored them
A prestigious brand doesn’t want to be associated with the wrong thing

Daily Mail (bad) the reviewer hasn’t awarded any stars as yet.

From WOS
“ For starters, the costumes are deeply disappointing. If this were any other show, they would be fine, but the issue is that this is a show about fashion. Tens of shoddy fake Chanel jackets do not a fashion show make”
🤣🤣🤣

The Times is *** and it ends with
"Like the stage version of Pretty Woman, this show doesn’t really have a soul of its own but it’s similarly catering to an audience that probably won’t care what critics think."
which seems like a fair sumup. I don't pay for The Times but it's easy to get past a paywall these days.
I feel bad for Elton who is probably having the worst year yet.

At the end of the day, this show delivers what it says on the tin. In that sense, it’s critic proof and the hen parties will be flocking to the show. As a property, the show will be just fine.

Scathing reviews, and I can see what they mean, but if you just accept it as a carbon copy of the film with songs added, it’s a fun show. Really don’t think those planning their girls weekends or nights out in the West End will be too fussed!

That's a grim few days for Elton John, these reviews on a Friday, followed by Broadway 'Tammy Faye' closing on Sunday.
Chances of Broadway for this must have plummeted - mainly poor reviews, and a composer who didn't deliver the goods strongly enough on this and a recent Broadway flop.
Of screen-to-stage adaptations Broadway seems to have erected a barbed wire fence the West End doesn't have. 'We Will Rock You' 'Flashdance', & 'Dirty Dancing' got North American/US Tours, but didn't touch Broadway - though a new version of 'Dirty Dancing' is being worked on by the original screen writer and Lonnie Price (aiming Broadway 2025 they say).
'Pretty Woman' did hit Broadway with a big advance, and lasted a year. Like 'The Devil....' it started in Chicago but instead went straight to Broadway - directed by (as here) Jerry Mitchell.
Picking up Jerry Mitchell as the new director after Chicago (where it was apparently very unready), and with runs in Plymouth/London not bringing the plaudits, 'The Devil....' is surely as tried and tested as it's going go get - and not yet convincing.

Yeah these reviews wasn’t what I was expecting. That’s a massive flop for the team. I wonder if it means it’ll close early.

These are entirely the reviews I expected, but I am interested to see how much it doesn't matter - like, the vast majority of people who want to see a musical of the Devil Wears Prada don't care what Dominic Cavendish or Arifa Akbar thought of it!

Yeah. I imagine a lot of the audience for this won't care about reviews. It'll likely attract the tourist market too. Not saying that in a dismissive way, I want to see it for sure, but I think this show will possibly be less affected by poor reviews than others. I guess we'll wait and see.

I incorrectly listed 'We Will Rock You' with screen-to-stage adaptations in a post above; I guess I was equating it due to 'pop power' of Queen and Elton John. 'Fame' could be added to West End screen-to-stage adaptations that got a number of US Tours, but not Broadway. There are probably mre - the West End's had a few!
If only there was pop power (when that means truly memorable stand-out well crafted songs). Who would begrudge Elton John reaching into his back catalogue or obscure album tracks to bolster the score for either 'Tammy Faye' or 'The Devil Wears Prada' if it made them great? After all, 'Tiny Dancer' was a 1972 single that failed to make the UK Top 40, but (once sampled) was a number 3 hit in 2009.
Scrolling Elton John's discography I noticed 'Healing Hands' - a song I'd forgotten; and a number 1 in the UK, a number 13 hit in the USA. It's a stronger example of his gospel tinged songs than he provided for 'Tammy Faye' - and memorable either in its own right, or due to 'way back' recall of it.

I'm not surprised at the reviews but equally wouldn't be surprised if this hangs around for a few months.

There's certainly not going to be any pull quotes on the marquee...

There's certainly not going to be any pull quotes on the marquee... Radio Times loved it. 4 Stars: "This story was tailor-made for the West End Ok, can you spell 'hit'?" My parents cancelled Radio Times as a painless way to cover most of their loss of Winter Fuel Allowance. It was a decades old buying habit, and they hardly opened it - except for the puzzle page, lol.

I think Prada will end up running until 2026 mostly because I think the audience who will see it isn't going to care about the reviews, it's a frothy musical, not Ibsen!

Some of the reviews were good but this hasn’t really done well with the critics. I do hope it keeps running because the clips on Social Media are really good so I’d be surprised if it doesn’t keep running.

Sales absolutely Tank in the new year so I think it's up in the air the longevity of this show. It will probably make it to the summer at least
