They'll CGI the melting.
Even if they did CGI Judy they would have to do it very cleverly because that would want the added expense of having to also CG1 the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion dressed as Winkies in those great big overcoats with the helmets

I doubt Dorothy will be visible in the movies. One of the more clever aspects of the musical is that you don't see her, you know that she's there, but in Act 2 you're sort of seeing what is happening "off-screen" from The Wizard of Oz film so to speak.

In the stage musical you hear her and see the shadow of both Dorothy and Toto as the melting occurs.

She isn't really "present" as a character to sympathise with though. You sort of fill in the bits of The Wizard of Oz yourself while you're watching it.
But if Dorothy is actually there, then I think you'd end up either not liking her, or being really frustrated that she doesn't know what's going on.

Does the bit where Dorothy is “seen” happen in the novel? She does appear in the novel and Elphaba has conversations with her. The novel really makes it seem like everything Elphaba does is with good intention but, in an almost Shakespearean way, is misinterpreted and has the exact opposite effect to what she originally intended leading to more chaos and misunderstanding. For example, there’s a part in The Wizard of Oz book where the witch sends bees and wolves after Dorothy and her companions kill them but in Wicked Elphaba sends them to lead them to Kiamo Ko, Elphaba’s castle, but the group think that Elphaba is attacking them so kill the animals. Even the melting scene is played out in a way that Elphaba takes Dorothy to a tower to talk to her and explain that she means Dorothy no harm but it’s interpreted by the group as Elphaba trying to kill Dorothy. I think these scenes will be present in the Wicked movie as there’s a lot of things the musical cuts out that deepen the pathos of Elphaba and make her more of a misunderstood character. She truly was a good person who did good things, but the musical literally has her go “nah, f*ck it I’m evil now”

This has always been my biggest gripe with the show, making the creation of those characters fit in with the narrative to try and connect it with the film.

It's a very strange cast. I wouldn't want to see a late 30's Harry Potter either. Quite!

I wonder if they'll delve a little deeper into Elphaba's mother's affair?
Or the importance of the red shoes?
Or (possibly)give Nessarose a full song?

I think they’re mad to screw around with it. People 👏🏻 Don’t 👏🏻 Want 👏🏻 The 👏🏻 Book 👏🏻. They want the show they love and know but depicted on film. Yes of course broaden out the locations and give us more background detail but by now they must realise that this genre is risky enough to get right without deviating from what’s familiar to people. Start throwing a load of stuff into it that most folks don’t recognise and stretching it out so you don’t get your familiar conclusion… absolute madness.

Or (possibly)give Nessarose a full song? Probably — you need an original song for award nominations!

Wouldn’t it be impossible to CGI Judy in since Warner Bros own the rights and this movie is being produced by Universal?

Recent article about the decision to have two films which seems to hinge almost entirely on the need to bring down the curtain after DG. www.digitalspy.com/movies/a40492337/wickeds-movie-adaptation-split-in-two-parts/And of course they want bragging rights on being the first musical to be done in two parts. I still don’t think there’s enough in the stage version to merit two films unless they bring in loads of unwanted stuff from the book so who are they trying to kid here? The Sound of Music runs at nearly 3 hours and has never had a problem holding peoples attention. And when it was originally screened didn’t they have an intermission? Why not bring that concept back? Cinemas would make a fortune on concessions - green slushies, butterified green popcorn etc, kiddies get to have a wee wee, check phone etc then get sat down for part 2. Perfect! What’s not perfect is waiting until Christmas 2025 to see part 2 of a long drawn out effort that the Director and composer seem to think is high art.

My DVD of TSOM has the intermission, with pictures of Salzburg.
When I went to see the 30th anniversary screening of Miss Saigon we had an interval so it is possible.
Just probably not worth it in terms of being about to get people to pay for two tickets a year apart (and probably the dvd/a stream if they've forgotten what was going on in the first half!).

Also, having just read the article... how many people go to the cinema on Christmas Day? How many cinemas are actually open?

Yeah lots of big movies open on Christmas day in the states. Christmas isn't as big thing in the same way it is here, thanksgiving is the big formal family meal and get together, Christmas is a bit more chilled.

Les Miserables was released on Christmas Day in the USA. But then we didn’t get it here for another couple of weeks after. So hopefully there won’t be as big of a gap for Wicked.

She seems youngish for the role but I think she’d be brilliant. Hopefully they give Morrible her own song across one of the two movies now.

She's getting some great roles in mainstream stuff now.
Hannah is nearly 48 so you could say she is slightly on the young side especially as I'd say she could pass for a few years younger but not stupidly too young for the part.
