The Other Place is reopening next month for the latest Mischief thing. I don’t call that opening. I call this opening: THE OTHER PLACE (2001) A Russian in the Woods (Peter Whelan) The Lieutenant of Inishmore (Martin McDonagh) The Prisoners Dilemma (David Edgar)

Swan has opening pencilled in. Let’s see. Building works traditionally overrun (and cost more).

March reopening is the plan for The Swan, according to an RSC staff member last week.

They're announcing their spring season in the next couple of weeks, so it will be interesting to see if the Swan is reopening as promised - I think they said March 2023.

I'm sure the usual suspects will be writing the RSC's obituary whoever is announced as AD.

I'm sure the usual suspects will be writing the RSC's obituary whoever is announced as AD. And I’m sure the usual suspects will be saying “Let’s give her a chance” when it’s Whyman, who has been there nine years already. There are plenty of people who could rescue the RSC even amongst the quite short list of people who might be interested - Goold, Godwin, Warner, Church, Littler. But it’s not going to be any of them is it ? All’s Well has been running for a while now yet no one here seems to have seen it yet. That’s how irrelevant they’ve become.

Mischief. What on Earth is that all about. It's Whyman's baby isn't it? Didn't she kick it off? There have been a couple of good things amongst the forgettable tosh... But that kind of small scale drama is probably what the Other Place is best used for.

My instinct is that the new artistic director will 100% be from our current roster of British Theatre Artistic Directors. It won't be someone with a body of work of Shakespeare productions. I'm thinking either Nadia Fall, Daniel Evans, Indhu Rubasingham or Tamara Harvey. Two of these names are right. It’s not Erica.

Some of their best Shakespeare productions have been in the Other Place - the McKellen Macbeth, Simon Russell-Beale Richard III, Ben Kingsley Hamlet, Deborah Warner's King John, Katie Mitchell's Henry VI Part 3.

Couldn’t get there earlier. 😁

A plea to new AD when in post
Please stop calling RSC the Royal Shakespeare Community……is it not a company ?

A plea to new AD when in post Please stop calling RSC the Royal Shakespeare Community……is it not a company ? No. It isn't. Doran made it quite clear when he took over he was de-emphasising the company aspect - one of the few promises that he kept. I heard vague rumours about Daniel Evans for this job - I wouldn't be opposed to that. Incidentally, why on earth is it taking so long to appoint somebody ? It is absurd - we have had a new PM and a new Monarch installed in the time they have been deliberating.

Wouldn’t any one of those four names have needed to give notice on their current directorships though? It would be bad form to just jump ship so swiftly, wouldn’t it?

My final guess is Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey. Which wonderfully leaves Nadia Fall or Indhu Rubasingham open for the NT!

What’s the connection between them ? Can’t recall that they’ve ever worked together.

Interesting really.
As Artistic Director at Chichester Daniel Evans hasn't made the greatest impact. But then again he had big shoes to fill after Jonathan Church.
And the output Chichester has made was generally better than what the RSC has done in the last 5 years. So I can give Daniel Evans a chance.

Daniel Evans hasn't directed much Shakespeare but he has at least done some. He has acted in a good number.
Plus he knows how to put on a big crowd pleasing show which should help RSC finances if he can find the right musical.
I suspect he has a pretty decent little black book of high profile contacts who might be persuaded to do a season or two.
Tamara Harvey seems to be a new writing specialist. But has broadened her scope in her current role.
I am not hugely enthused by this as a possible leadership pair. But I am very happy to see what they could achieve.
Anything is better than 5 more years of the current mess

i think we still guess as the smoke has not wafted across the Avon until this week.
The joint appointment may work and agree it is better than the mess RSC are in. However is this going to restore company to world leading status...? Think not but at least they can call on contacts to make work unlike the last few years of third raters.
Hear Hamlet opens Swan with EW directing....maybe at last the entire community can play Elsinore in all its forms.
It will be at least a year before new AD's make any season and by then the company may be over.....dont sell your houses yet you two-if it is you who come to RSC.
Anyway-hopeful if not over the moon.
