Tom Dick & Harry New Vic (Staffs) / Alexandra Palace

So wanted to see this and not for the first time I've wished a day trip from London was easier or that they'd do a tour or transfer. Hope it has a longer life.

Caught the first performance at Ally Pally last night. Thought this was really excellent, and my dad who loves war stories was gushing about it afterwards. Much funnier than I was expecting too!

There are some serious issues with sound in that venue however - they are performing without mics, which means that even from my second row seat I struggled to hear what was being said when an actor was facing away from me. Luckily they do a great job of practically spinning in circles so even when missing words you can piece sentences together. I'm not sure they can do anything to resolve this for later in the run other than mic everyone up.

Lots of audience participation from various places in the front row on all sides, but nothing too terrible.

I saw this yesterday with one of the many ticket offers floating about and thought this was a strong play. Well worth seeing. Performed by an all male cast. Ran about 2 hours 45 minutes including interval, so a bit above the advertised run time.

But as others have said, there is one major problem and that is you will only hear about 75% of the words. I was sat on the fourth (back) row at one side, an excellent view and thankfully outside the audience interaction sections (most of the front row get to join in at different times, some with a speaking role and more actively than others). But you really have to work to piece together the dialogue. In some cases, there is amplification, but it's slightly delayed. In other cases, there isn't. Really, it isn't the most difficult play to follow, but this does also sour things.

Avoid the tiered section and the upper level. I can't imagine you would hear much at all. At this performance, they'd moved everyone towards the front, but if tickets sales take off later in the run, this might be more of a problem.

As I said, worth seeing. Nice venue too and they have water coolers available to fill your water bottles. But if it's transferring, I might be tempted to wait, with the idea the Duke of York's will be much better set for sound quality.

We all complain about West End prices, but a discounted ticket these days is often £25, compared to £28.50 back in 2005.

There's a few offers around again this week. All I can suggest is people make sure they are signed up to the mailing lists of some of the major discounters (I don't think I can share the links directly).

I'd also say if you book a cheap ticket at the back, you are almost certain to be able to move forward.
