Seems the Theatre Cafe is opening a diner in the West End with singing waiters and waitresses. Guess similar to the one on Broadway which is great fun

Didn't they try the singing waitstaff idea at the Leon takeaway/restaurant place opposite Les Mis when it first opened? I don't think it lasted long.
It'll be interesting to see what the theatre cafe does with it, since they're the sort of business that could fully commit to something like that.

Actually I am right about the singing waiters. Just found it on their IG page.

It's done in a fun way on Broadway. They suddenly burst into song and jump up on the tables. All very camp and OTT.

I find it annoying enough when someone disturbs me by asking if everything's OK with my meal. (I've eaten two thirds of it. What do you think?) I don't want someone singing at me.
Also, I know that if someone was singing at me it would be at exactly that moment I would be embarrassed by my peas making a sudden bid for freedom.

They don’t jump on *actual* tables where people are/will be eating, there’s usually platforms in between the tables that they jump onto. When I was recently in NYC though they did do a Grease medley that ended with confetti being dropped all over the diner, including into people’s food and drinks. I just found it funny, my mother not so much, she straight away asked for a new coffee!

I guess that's not quite as bad. I still think I'd find the experience very stressful though. I don't enjoy eating out even in normal restaurants.

It's not for everyone but I guess a lot of tourists will love it. I don't think London has the same crazy anything-can-happen vibe that New York does, but good luck to them!

It won't be everyone's cup of tea but I say bravo for trying something different and I have a feeling it will be very popular. I'm already thinking of going for my birthday.

It’s Ellen’s Stardust Diner in NYC that does that isn’t it? It’s great fun there, I love it! It’s not on the tables you eat on, there’s a kinda narrow stage between booths. I think most people who go there know what to expect so everyone loves it! Be interesting to see how it’s done and received here.

It will be full of precocious stagey kids with their parents eating burgers. Or worse, slightly older stagey kids in groups, eating impossible burgers before they go to the Heathers matinee.

I haven't been to Ellen's in probably a decade, despite being in New York a couple of times a year. I found the singing quite varying in terms of quality, but always loved it when Seasons of Love came on. LOL
But unfortunately it's quite pricey and the food used to be DIRE (even for a diner) so usually would just have some fries or maybe a dessert. I'll definitely give it a go here at some point, provided the prices aren't to steep.

I liked the concept of Ellens and enjoyed it on my first few trips to New York, but the service declined to the point of it being no longer worth it, and the quality of food got worse and worse (as prices went up and up).
I hope this new Theatre Cafe Diner works - although to succeed they'll need to make sure the food and service are both up to scratch, and not rely just on the gimmick. My last visit to the Cafe was a disappointment with dry cake and extremely slow (and slightly antagonistic) service.

No one's forcing you to go. And I won’t be, but that doesn’t mean I can’t pass an opinion on it. That’s what we do here 🙂

I can't help but wonder if the waiters are trained to sing that well then why are they wasting their time waiting tables? Oh wait, I think I know.

I can't help but wonder if the waiters are trained to sing that well then why are they wasting their time waiting tables? Oh wait, I think I know. It’s the classic party scenario: ”Hi I’m Jerry. What about you?” ”I’m Norbert Flume. Im an actooooor” ”Which restaurant?”

I can't help but wonder if the waiters are trained to sing that well then why are they wasting their time waiting tables? Oh wait, I think I know. Well a lot of trained actors wait tables when they don’t have theatre jobs. In the way of a diner like that they can showcase their talent while earning money for the rent. At Ellen’s they always had a „wall of fame“ of people who worked there and then got hired for Broadway shows…

I am guessing these diners are also a great place to get discovered by directors/composers/producers. It's rather unfortunate that such a small percentage of upcoming artists make it to the top and the majority just ending up waiting tables for...years, maybe even decades, waiting for their big break. Whenever I see a performer at a pub theatre or this kind of diner, I always wonder which lot they'll fall into, and I feel rather sad that despite all their talent the odds are stacked against them in this industry. Oh well.
