My minidisc recorder Sony MZ-G750 is on the blink & only records when it feels like it. With West End Live imminent my son has bought me a replacement from ebay. It is a Sony MZ-R501. The problem is that this has no microphone socket. Does anyone know if I get a new microphone with power [my current one doesn't have this] will I be able to plug into the "line in"jack & record? I have tried emailing the Sony customer care helpline only for them to say they don't exist as they are not on their current list of products.

Most smartphones have a pretty decent recording facility these days.

Thanks theatremonkey. Seems I can't use a microphone with the MzR501 so was a waste of money. Thanks also to partyentdown but unfortunately I don't have a smartphone.

If you can find a battery-powered preamplifier that might do the trick, but I've just done a quick search and most of the preamps are for studio use and require an external power supply.

Thanks Matthew. My son says he will try & fix my original one. I think the record button inside needs soldering as it is not making the connection.
