Beverly Knight gets her award. I have no idea if it's deserved for her performance, but she has been such a stalwart and sold so many tickets to so many shows, this is well earned.

I know and understand that it is because of rights issues, but it does seem odd that, in the UK, I can only see the edited highlights of the awards on ITV... whereas if I was in, say, Germany, Norway, or the USA, I am able to watch the whole Olivier Awards ceremony, (almost) live, unedited, in its entirety on YouTube. Bonkers, really.

I'd forgotten how fantastic Hannah's voice is.
That opening was so good.
And... I've been harping on for years about the announcer not putting "The" in front of the theatre name. It drove me mad.
Seems they have listened to me. 😀

I’m a little behind. Interesting Oklahoma! didn’t use Marisha Wallace for since Cain’t Say No.
Probably going against the grain here, but I’m not keen on Hannah Waddingham as host. Didn’t like the opening number. It’s annoying how everyone’s beautiful and gorgeous and in Mark Strong’s case hot.

Tammy Faye cannot be as dull as this performance, can it? No. Weird choice. But I guess Katie B. wasn't available because of the baby? She was on the front row looking heavily pregnant, she shouted 'hey y'all' into a mic at the start of the song.. But she later went up on speech to claim her award. |

Why is Book of Mormon performing? Are ticket sales poor? It’s their 10th anniversary in the West End, so another milestone. They had The Lion King perform in 2019 as part of their 20th anniversary. I guess in the future, we’ll have SIX back at the Olivier stage should it reach its 10th or more anniversary. |

Very happy for My Neighbour Totoro but very disappointed to see The Band's Visit go away empty handed when it should have won at least a couple awards (namely Actress and Score - though as mentioned earlier, the incredibly stupid parameters of that award meant it was against shows it had no business being up against - and although I didn't get to see it in the end, I get the feeling I would have wanted it to win Best Musical over Sky's Edge also, though I of course recognise that, outside of the Best Score fudgery, the actual winners were also incredibly deserving). I also thought that the speech for Prima Facie's win kind of exemplified all the reasons I didn't think it was all that good a play - it's all very well to want to start a conversation, but I think you've also got to actually have something of value to say about the topic for it to be a meaningful one. Pointing out a problem is easy, actually providing thoughts on what to do about it is hard, and the play only really does the easy bit.

Is Andrew Rannells there? It was his understudy. He wasn't a powerhouse like Rannells but the song is a dud Andrew Rannells/Jim Bakker never sang that song in the show.
'Light of The World' was sung by Billy Graham, played by Peter Caulfield, who sung it at the Oliviers.
It was an odd choice to perform, but I disagree the song is a dud. Granted it came across a bit flat at first, but the energy improved as it went on. It wasn't helped by the dark lighting they had in the background, where as in the stage show it was much more brighter and uplifting.
Very interesting that Katie Brayben was pregnant from the first day of rehearsal, so it makes no sense that the producers were apparently looking to transfer the show as fast as possible.
