Save the date! April 3, Sunday, a week before the Oliviers.
They have announced that this will be their new schedule moving forward.
The London Critics Circle Theatre Awards have proven to be the best precursor when it comes to predicting the Olivier Awards winners. The correlation between the Circle winner and the Olivier winner are close to accurate match. (Andrew Scott, Sharon D. Clarke, Patsy Ferran, Sam Tutty, etc. were some of the winners from the last seasons who won the Olivier)
The organization has announced that they will also be recognizing individuals and organizations who have risen above the challenge during the pandemic, so it will be interesting who they’ll award. I doubt it would be ALW whom the BroadwayWorld UK Awards just crowned. Perhaps Rufus Norris and NT at Home, which is worthy of recognition.
The usual categories the Circle awards (subject to change/update):
The Michael Billington Award for Best New Play
The Peter Hepple Award for Best Musical
Best Actor
Best Actress
The Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance
Best Director
Best Designer
Most Promising Playwright
The Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer [other than a playwright]
Special Award [for services to theatre]
My predictions though
The Michael Billington Award for Best New Play
Best of Enemies, Young Vic (I think the critics are more inclined to pick plays like this)
The Peter Hepple Award for Best Musical
Back to the Future the Musical, Adelphi Theatre (they did like Cinderella too, so maybe it has a chance?)
Best Actor
Ben Daniels, The Normal Heart, National Theatre (if he wins here, this would be Ben’s first Circle win. Shame the award-giving body also doesn’t have Supporting Actor/Actress categories unlike the rest)
Best Actress
Saoirse Ronan, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Almeida Theatre (I know she was snubbed at the Oliviers but they have decided months before the Olivier nominations were announced)
The Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance
Cush Jumbo, Hamlet, Young Vic (if they won’t reward any of the Almeida Maccers performers here)
Best Director
Rebecca Frecknall, Cabaret, Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre
Best Designer
Tom Scutt, Cabaret, Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre (unless Life of Pi will upset)
Most Promising Playwright
Jack Holden, Cruise, Duchess Theatre
The Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer [other than a playwright]
This is an open field. Perhaps someone from the affiliate theatres?
Special Award [for services to theatre]
I hope they recognize someone from the below-the-line/crafts categories once again. The theatre crafts and other freelancers have been greatly affected by the pandemic too.
