I'm still amazed that Spitting Image is getting to the end of its scheduled run but this isn't. Why? This finishes In a couple of weeks anyway and Aspects was scheduled to run much longer.

What is more perplexing is how they ever thought a six month run realistic, given its niche appeal. This revival will play as long as the original Stephen Ward production did, which feels about right.

Because there literally seems to be zero interest in Spitting Image and it will have managed its full run. Aspects has a decent cast and director and I thought in comparison it would have stood a better chance.

I think Aspects would have sold better if they'd announced the shorter run from the start. And if the logo/artwork/promotional material didn't look like one of those tacky Valentine's Day compilation CDs.

You're right, the artwork is cheesy looking and I'd say it certainly hasn't done the show any favours.

Spitting Image even with the puppets likely cost less to run not to mention Avalon has deeper pockets. I suspect the advance for September and October was so low for Aspect, they decided to cut their losses.

Just to point out, I really enjoyed the show, but can see it's flaws. I've loved the score for 30+ years, so loved finally seeing it performed live on stage. But the original came at a time when ALW, Michael Ball and Trevor Nunn were hot names. I'm not sure what appeal there is to a new audience this time round.

I mean I had a much better time at this than I had at probably 10 other shows I've seen so far this year.

HA!
I mean, gorgeous score, sung by stunning voices (largely), with a fabulous orchestra and a well intentioned if sometimes slightly off set? It's an operetta - treat it as such and it's a hoot!
Give me this over some of the crap we have clogging up the West End right now 😂

I finally caught up with this a couple of nights ago, I've always liked a couple of the songs but have always found the show wanting in other departments. it's a show about selfish people who live for sex - there is no love on that stage just lust. I think Jonathan Kent has done a decent job with keeping things moving along, but in truth he's just polishing a turd. Michael Ball's voice remains terrific but his acting? He's just not up to the task. And while Lara Pitt-Pulford gives it her best shot ( and gives the best performance on the stage) the performances by and large are either too broad or too wooden for me to care about anything that happens. ( Mr Bogyo's abs are impressive though) . I think this is probably the last major revival of the show for at least a decade - it hasn't aged well and clearly there isn't an audience demand for it.

So his abs got him the job?

So his abs got him the job? Yeah, wasn’t sure about this comment. I don’t think it would go down well if a reviewer suggested that a positive of a poor performance is “she had enormous boobs”… 😂

I’m not laying into for him for this (as I haven’t seen it, the tour with David Essex and the two-piano Southwark version was enough for me) but he was absolutely terrible in Moulin Rouge and I can’t imagine him becoming excellent overnight. Someone up the chain likes him, which I suppose is all that matters when it comes to casting decisions.

I genuinely do not get the hate towards him, if I'm honest.

It isn’t hate. Its apathy. It’s ‘look at all these people that could have done it a million times better’. For him to have dragged the same wet blanket with him to ‘Aspects’ has me concerned that he will have go-to status when they’re casting some really important stuff in the near future.

Could we be respectful? JB isn’t my cup of tea either but to say he got gig because of his abs is disrespectful objectification. Let’s play nicely.

I genuinely do not get the hate towards him, if I'm honest. I agree, it's grim - like, leave the poor guy alone. I don't understand in general what people gain from stating negative opinions again and again and again though. It's like - we get it, some people don't like him. I do feel the line has got blurred between genuine critique of his performance and simply slagging him off which is gross. If you do like something then I see the pleasure in talking about it a lot. If you don't, why not say it once or twice then spend time in a different thread/talking about something else?
