Best known and somewhat typecast in TV sitcoms, like Donald Sinden he was a stage actor of much greater range. I recall him in The Entertainer - I think one of the first to play the role following Olivier.

He was a revelation in the film Lilting (with Ben Whishaw) in 2014. For those of us who grew up watching him in sitcoms it was moving to see him play an old person in such a touching way.

Only time I saw him on stage was in The Exorcist which really wasn’t a great showpiece for anyones talents but I met him after one of those talk and signings events at the NT and found him perfectly charming. My main memories of him on screen were in Only When I Laugh, The Irish RM and one episode of Rising Damp (he had the same birthday as me so extra kudos for that): Rest In Peace.

Sad news, I saw him on the stage many times over the years wonderfully debonair performer.
