The Make It Beautiful Theatre Company are hosting a Shorts Festival at the White Bear Theatre which started tonight and will finish on March 12th - but doesn't run throughout. Basically there are two different plays a night this week and the same on the week starting 9th March.
Tonight's offerings were "Free" and "Thirty-Nine and Out".
"Free" was an interesting play, veering between tragicomedy with a slight hint of absurdity. A couple, who may not always have been a couple, look after a baby whilst grieving over the baby's mother and end up cleaning their house obsessively to remove the bad things in their life. Good spatial use of the (limited) stage at the venue and rapport between the odd couple well-pitched and simpatico. Staging and effects also good.
"Thirty-Nine and Out" was more of an extended sketch rather than a play but had a good number of laughs in it from the double-act of two guys having a game if cards and fearing the onset of old age now they are 39: liver spots, erectile dysfunction, skin cancer, grey chest hairs - these are some of the concerns of our even odder couple.
I'd love to tell you the name of the playwrights but the information isn't available on the or on the night. Maybe it was that prolific writer from yesteryear - Anon.
The two plays came to around 45 minutes with no interval but at £12 it hardly breaks the bank. Would love to see more but running out of time.
