Was told this was heading to a new Troubador theatre, pressing in November. Was told that in December last year so things may have shifted. Buzzkill 😐

None of the other Disney shows seem to be talking about this on their Instagram etc (as they did when Beauty And The Beast was announced for the Palladium) so I assume this isn't a direct transfer and is maybe the Arts Ed production or a new one.

It’s a new production. Troubadour Light City I believe.

I did a look up on the website and the domain isn't registered to any known entertainment company.
The lack of any official branding makes me just a little suspicious.
I would hold off on any major excitement just yet.

They had a website advertising it was coming soon and had you sign up for priority access and then nothing came of it in the end. Although, of course, we now know this was due to the Weinstein case, but still.

Are they still going with the idea Light City will open in April? I haven’t seen any evidence of construction yet, but I know it’s just a case of them fitting the theatre pieces back together.

Oh no. I’ve just signed up for news. Hope this isn’t some scam to get details.

Very excited for this! Loved the screening a few years ago. Just a really good show. Hoping they don’t go down the celebrity stunt casting route though. I will definitely be booking!

What a strange venue if this is true...

Won’t the Troubadour theatre be a bit of a schlep for many people? Certainly for occasional theatre goers. I always wanted to see Newsies, but I think my appetite was sated after it being shown in BBC2 at Christmas, although I would probably go if the prices were decent and the casting good. I do think this is a hard sell to those not regular visitors to London musicals, so it would be interesting how tickets sales go after the initial impetus dies down. Also is Disney taking over the West End? How many shows running now plus Beauty & the Beast, then Newsies!

Newbadour isn't as far out as wembley park and that seemed to get some sort of sustainable audience. If the rent for the space is cheap then so too might be tickets.

Just rewatching the live Disney recording and noted how important it will be to have a full stage. They can’t go cheap on the size of the ensemble and the set because it’s what makes the show. The score is nice enough with a few good key numbers, but the magic comes when there are twenty lads doing near balletic choreo in perfect synchronicity. Given that the role of Jack (in this version at least) doesn’t do much of it, it might get stunt cast and they’ll leave the dancing to the pro’s. Would love to see Leslie Garcia Bowman leading ‘King of New York’ with his insane tap skills.

I always thought that Disney tried to do this show in London and even did auditions but didn't find good enough dancers. So it worries me a bit that a non Disney production thinks they can/have. Will it be as good?

There's not much to it otherwise, a few nice ballads and bit of tension, but its one of those rarer newer (post 2000) musicals that allows the dance to really cut through and deliver the show. Almost like trying to cut the dancing from Cats or the chandelier from Phantom (hehe). The website says 'all new London edition' so I whilst its a newspaper reference it's also implying this will not be like the Disney edition we've seen and know. I guess the shows choreography will be designed to make it a little more accessible to UK talent.

All of the dancers that were in the numerous dance troops formed off the back of Diversity and Flawless are out there now, plus all the kids inspired by them. Casting it’ll be fine. Keeping them disciplined might be more difficult.

I am sure there are enough kids just at Arts Ed to fill the stage and that's even before you look at the rest of the MT colleges. The ensemble don't need to be pros at all and would be a great starting place for the new graduates.

I think you might be doing UK talent a disservice by your last comment. Plenty of fantastic dancers out there.

I don't think anyone who saw 42nd Street would complain about the standards of dance in the West End.

I don't think anyone who saw 42nd Street would complain about the standards of dance in the West End. Some of the dirt worst dancing I've ever seen professionally was on Broadway - Shrek, Spamalot and Little Mermaid all had some atrocious ensemble dancing. I genuinely believe our standards are better here. For all their faults, Arts Ed/Laine and the like really do churn them out at a high level.

Pity. I'd have liked a transfer of the Broadway production rather than a new one. Also, I think the Troubadour venues are ghastly.

Re: talent, I only said that because there's been mention here previously of Disney not bringing this over themselves because they couldn't find talent strong enough here for it. In terms of a unique version, Bedknobs is a Disney owned entity, yet the British producers were allowed to stage it themselves just with Disney's name attached.

As I understand it, Disney wanted an American cast, Equity refused. So Disney ran some performative open auditions to go "we've looked everywhere, the Brits just don't have what it takes". Equity told them no again so it was shelved.
