That was much harder than I thought past the first couple. Because... there are musicals like Phantom that have my heart, are beautiful, and mean a huge amount to me, but I wouldn't go and watch frequently. Then there are shows I can see over and over, like Jersey Boys, but objectively wouldn't rate higher than others in my list. And probably I'd choose differently if I did it tomorrow!

5: A Chorus Line but this is based on seeing it once in the 1970s and being blown away.
But different productions give different answers - Original Cats in my top ten, recent Cats revival in my bottom five.

It was one of my first (of many) musical obsessions :-D I'm sure lots of people have!! I have both the double CD London cast recording and a double LP of an earlier concert version. I wish I'd seen it in person, but have only watched the video of it on YouTube. It feels like there's very nearly a great musical in there - there's certainly a lot about it that fascinates me. I have a real soft spot for the huge flops that followed on the heels of the eighties mega musicals - as well as Witch Which, I'd pick out Metropolis and Bernadette (which wasn't great, but is my own personal obsession as it's the first musical I went on my own to see!) |
