Hi all, just a heads up, little known british musical from a few years back, I don't believe it did well but the cast recording is absolutely AMAZING, beautiful heartfelt lyrics, I just can't stop listening, Louise Dearman sings 'Lost in Translations' and it's stunning. If you like powerful emotional recordings then get this recording!!!

I went to see this at the Soho Theatre a few years back, Louise Dearman wasn't in it though. Nikki Davis Jones, Julie Atherton, Cynthia Evro and others. Incredible cast. Really enjoyed it.
Kerry Ellis always used to sing Lost in Translation on tour as her musical director, Craig Adams, wrote it.

I saw this at the Soho Theatre, and thought it was dreadful. The concept did absolutely nothing for me. Neither did the music. Maybe it needs a few more listens...

TBH after watching the show now, the concept album is way better. I don't rate a few of the singers that made the show but I think with better staging and direction it still could be great, I love smaller productions like this that do something new and I liked the concept that we can spend less than a minute in a space with people and judge them without knowing what is happening in their lives. Makes a change to the boring juke box musicals we keep getting hammered with.

I didn't enjoy the show at the Soho, but the cast was amazing and had it been presented as a concert, I would probably have liked it more. It was a muddle of a book, and was re-tweaked a lot during the run - I'm sure I wasn't the only one who found it incomprehensible. So I'd say the recording is worth a listen.

I watched a bit of it on digital theatre and struggled to get into it. I may give it another try.

Your memory serves you well, Julie Atherton was indeed in the show, and she got to sing what to me was the most (only?) memorable number in the score, "Lost in translation". The concept is an ok way of linking together the stories of these characters, as they all happen to share a ride in one of the lifts at Covent Garden's tube station. However, I do remember questioning if that isn't perhaps too little to actually bring the various pieces together, particularly as they were quite diverse. Personally I think it could be worth a revisit if they put together a really strong cast of new faces - plus previews at the Southwark Playhouse are typically rather gentle on the audience's wallets.

I'll be booking, as I book all Southwark Playhouse musicals, mainly because it's only £12 with my PAYG subscription. I suspect they have several hundred members who take a similar view.
It's not only great value for customers but also astute marketing when most of their productions are new or little-known.

I see pretty much all the musicals at Southwark for this reason, and they don't discriminate on booking last minute with those PAYG tickets so are perfect for a spontaneous trip (and also, Tuesday matinees are great!). Usually buy a drink at the bar too as it's pretty good pricing for London.

Good lord this was a looong 90 minutes. I mean, the lift idea is OK, but I feel like it needed more explanation as to what was going on. I had a vague idea having read the short blurb on the Southwark Playhouse website, but other than that, I didn't really understand. Walked out behind a group who also said they didn't understand.
The cast was OK, some members were better than others. I wasn't a huge fan of Luke Friend as the lead.
It got a partial standing ovation, but think that came from friends of the cast. Room was about 2/3 full.
Not one I will be recommending unfortunately.

Agree with the above. I went to see the first preview on Friday but forgot to share my thoughts.
I thought there were some good performances, and some of the songs were decent. And actually I did quite like the staging and some of the choreography. But the whole concept felt very flimsy to me. It just felt like a few random peoples stories thrown together and then at the end they’re all linked because they’re in a lift together? Really lacked any substance. It was a nice night at the theatre but wouldn’t go and again or necessarily recommend.
I did enjoy it 10 times more than it’s predecessor ‘Anyone Can Whistle’, though. This at least felt professional rather than Am Dram.
