I’m sat here completely speechless. 91 is of course a fantastic age but it’s still so heartbreaking, he seemed ageless! RIP to an incredible man, Into the Woods and Company particularly have brought me so much joy and I’ll always be grateful to Stephen Sondheim for them.

I wonder if it's not too late for West Side Story which is out in two weeks to add a tribute?
Not many people have a theatre named after them but Sondheim managed the rare honours of two theatres named him both on Broadway and in the West End.

What an incomparable loss to the musical theatre community. And what a life well lived. RIP Mr Sondheim.
What luck that he was able to see the new WSS before he passed away.

Sondheim was a genius. Goes without saying. But there’s something beyond that. It was his heart. This clip encapsulates what separates Sondheim – the music and the words, of course, but the search for further meaning, the shared experience, the possible improvements, the potential of collaboration, the JOY when everyone gets it right…
91 is not a tragedy, but this is still absolutely heartbreaking.

The person who showed that musical theatre was an art, as serious, as profound, as joyful as any other. Sondheim's shows took us into possibilities we didn't even realise existed. My life is infinitely richer because of him. Thank you, Sir.

Profoundly sad. Cannot believe this - just an icon and to echo everyone; an incredible legacy. How lucky we have been.

So sad and quite a shock to wake up to the news this morning. The music of Sondheim was, and is, a big part of my MT life. I would say I have seen more Sondheim musicals than any other composer and most multiple times. Although I never actually met him I have been in his presence many times before over the years and its amazing how the atmosphere of a room changed when he entered. Everyone was totally in awe of him. I think I will watch Gypsy tonight as it has been released on Netflix

Yes, sad news, but what a list of achievements. I do quite envy those who were old enough to have seen the first productions of those great late 60s, 1970s shows, but I count myself lucky that my early theatre-going days were in the 90s when there were a series of superb revivals: Donellan's Sweeney Todd at the National, the Mendes Company at the Donmar, the Matthias Little Night Music at the National too; plus of course UK premieres of Assassins, Into the Woods and A Sunday in the Park with George. The one I'm longing to see again is Pacific Overtures which would look great in the Olivier in my view...
