Saw the final matinee this afternoon and good lord what a complete misfire for the OAT. Me and my friends left at the interval and went and chilled in the park. When I attended, the second half was probably even worse overall, with some laughably bad direction and costumes. I stayed because I felt I was watching something momentous, one of the famous all-time terrible productions that people will discuss for years to come. This was 2022's Rent: Remixed, Behind the Iron Mask or Too Close to the Sun. I tried to document it as much as possible because it's like the ur-example of terrible musical theatre production. I couldn't believe what I was watching. If I were trying to intentionally absolutely destroy an existing successful show, this would be absolutely textbook.

I adore this show so much - everything about it. Did anyone go to the final matinee? I want to know what funny muck ups they did? The evening show was stunning. Amazing cast and such a special show.

We could run a who could think up the funniest thing they could have done in Legally Blonde Muck Up Matinee without naming a particular performer doing something.
Cast spent 20 minutes all saying their pronouns and listing every gender type they approve of!

Diverse casting yet still being true to the source material and no gimmicks. And yes they have a massive stage, but it's still a good production design

The Muny is on the theatre bucket list and IIRC 10% of the tickets are free.

Omg I thought the bump was going to say the production is going on tour or something. Thank the theatre Gods not.

I reckon on the strength it ticket sales that this will be back next year. God help us. I hope Regents Park go back to doing more classic shows - this totally missed the mark for me. Secret Garden or She Loves Me would be my picks.

It’s still never a smooth sing though is it? Being outdoors can’t help the sound balance and it did still sound screechy and wobbly in places. I just don’t think it suits an outdoor setting. It needs a lot of ‘sound management’ to smooth it out, with all those big high sings, and that is a lot harder to do outside.

That Muny production looks so much better (okay I didn't notice the sort of pun til I typed that, but leaving it). I love their Emmett! Definitely some sound issues but seemed as though that was just from being outdoors rather than dire performances. Whoever did Elle's makeup needs to sort themselves out, though, there's something very odd going on with her nose that looks like they tried something that failed, or forgot to blend, or something.

Every time I see a clip of this show, irrespective of what production it is, it just sounds like a lot of tuneless shouting with an air of desperation.

I reckon on the strength it ticket sales that this will be back next year. Really? It was being papered pretty widely in the first couple of weeks. Maybe some bizarre word of mouth based on "you have to see this.." may have picked sales up drastically afterwards - but I'd be very surprised if it returned.

A lot of performances did sell out, it seems to help that we have had some brilliant weather and I am sure that food show they had on in the park helped too.
With decent reviews and great sales, this will return, probably the first show - but it will not be the main musical next year. Bringing a show back isn’t as expensive as creating a new show.

There's no way this is coming back.
Regents Park will return to a more traditional revival next year for sure

Regents Park will return to a more traditional revival next year for sure From your mouth to God's ears🙏 I miss my annual trip to the OAT but fear whilst Timothy Shreader is AD we will have to live with these "off the wall" - sorry - reimagined productions I'm looking forward to next summer's production of Camelot set in a nuclear power plant. Even my friends (the most supportive mixed group you could imagine - like a focus group dream) has written them off as try-hards. Bit early for that IMHO (they were referring to Carousel, Legally Blonde and 101 Dalmatians. All are members, al have been going to every major production at the OAT for a long time. I want them to come good again. Be diverse. Don’t let being diverse being the point of the show. Cast it well. Stage it well. Hire quality costumes. Don’t alienate your core audience. I’ve met Timothy a few times and he is an excellent professional, but injecting one’s politics into theatre can only end badly. Keep it tight. Budget better. And don’t go chasing the “story”. Your audience is turning away from you.

I haven't seen this production but I watched the film for the first time the other day after having previously seen the Broadway proshot. I really liked the film, as I liked the musical when I saw it. One thing I have to say is that I think the musical does the Emmett/Elle relationship way better! He barely seems to be there in the film, and when he is, it's in a kind of mentor capacity rather than any kind of romantic interest. (In my opinion) In the musical it's a bit more developed, especially Chip on My Shoulder and the bit where she picks him out a suit. I thought it just felt a bit shoehorned into the film. I guess the musical is longer so they had more space to develop it though. Does anyone else agree or am I missing something about the film?

I agree, it's one of the few film-to-musical adaptations where the musical is better. They should make a film of the musical. Although Reese Witherspoon was and will always be perfection in that role 😁
