Fun evening at the ENO last night to see HMS Pinafore. Traditional staging with an updated twist resulting in a very funny production. Some of the comedy was almost slapstick with plenty of modern references. Great cast and the excellent ENO chorus who looked like they were having a lot of fun. Even had a tap routine. Les Denis, although not an opera singer, had a good stab at his role as Admiral of the Fleet.
However I don't think you can beat Sasha Regan's all mail version which is coming back to Wilton's Music Hall next April.

Not really my cup of tea.
They asked for feedback and I wrote that Les Dennis seemed a step too far - a bit too panto for *moi*.
Also that this was my only booking this season and that I'd taken out a ROH membership in response to the absence of Secret Seats - obv. it means a significant reduction in visits.
ROH is selling out evey performance atm. I can only think others are also slipping across the piazza.

The ROH may be selling out when it comes to performances but advanced sales look to be slower than pre-covid. The general public booking for booking period 2 opened this past Wednesday & every performance of every main stage production is still showing 100+ tickets available.

Les Dennis didn't work for me and the production was generally far too busy.
No sure I really like Pinafore. The tunes aren't as good as the later ones.e.g could give a toss about Buttercup and the early songs are a bit dull. Nevermind the why and wherefore and When I was a lad seem the real highpoints to me.
Saw a tremendous 4 handed production at the Kings Head Islington about 5 years ago and will see the Sasha Reagan to restore my faith.

I was slightly anxious after Iolanthe but here i thought most of the elements came together and truly worked. I can see this getting several revivals.
I also thought this was incredibly well sung and LD fitted in rather well.

Saw this last night and didn't really do it for me.
Was a bit too panto and missed a lot of the wit of the dialogue and music in lieu of cramming in topical references (flossing, Gangnam Style etc). They also added a small boy who didn't really add anything (in fact he talked over all the good bits of When I Was a Lad). I also found all the breaking of the fourth wall a bit tedious.
Some added strangeness with Alexandra Oomens as Josephine ill and so she was miming with someone else singing from the wings. During 'never mind the why and wherefore" Oomens was miming and Les Dennis was knackered and too out of breath to sing so it was just the Captain singing on stage!
Although I wanted to say that John Savournin was superb as the Captain - such a talent and he really carried the show.

Sad to have missed it as a G&S fan but really glad to hear John Savournin was good in it as have loved his performances elsewhere. I recommend looking out for Charles Court Opera which do small scale but very enjoyable shows.
