It was nice to finally see it after so long. I still prefer Les Mis though. Better story and a more epic feel. I suspect Phantom would have felt more epic had you seen it before the 'lighter' version was moved in (speaking of which, tix are now finally being released for the final weeks of the full-fat version on Broadway...and I think I will go to send it off!). |

To be fair I'm not sure what the 'lighter' version is. Just went to see it on a random tuesday evening and took away what I saw. I'm aware that its not the same show than it started (i.e. lyrics changed, scenery, etc), yet that's inevitable for a musical that's been on for thirty plus years. The Mousetrap is sort of the exception but hey. But never the less I was happy, very happy in fact. It's the type of musical that has lasted due to iconography and taking an old novel and reigniting it in a new way because the story still very much works today. |

Well, the lighter version is what you saw. I'm just saying you may have found the bigger original have had a more 'epic feel' than what is essentially a touring version shoehorned into a West End theatre (with cast members who would not have made the cut back in the show's heyday).

In fairness I think even in its heyday phantom wasn't what I'd call epic, certainly when compared to les mis.
Both amazing shows, but I wouldn't have called phantom epic.

It's entirely subjective of course and depends on what is meant by 'epic'. As a story, then yes Les Misérables is certainly more qualified to constitute 'epic' than Phantom. As a production, though? I don't think anyone can seriously compare what's playing at the Sondheim Theatre now to what's at the Majestic on Broadway and conclude that the former is more 'epic'. |

I was expecting something similar to the London situation for the sake of inserting the cheaper touring version, but this is great for the cast, crew, and front of house staff. I hope demand remains strong enough that the show keeps running in its current form. |

Time to start taking bets on the restaged version moving into the refreshed theatre after work is complete?

Happened many times before with many other shows that have announced closing dates and then extended. You don’t buy a ticket for “the final performance”, you buy a ticket for the performance on that date, which is what you’re getting. I understand the disappointment (been in same situation), but that’s just how it is. |

In an interview with NY1, Lloyd Webber described Phantom closing as "unnecessary".
This does seem really quite sad.
Rumour seems to be that the Majestic will be going through renovations with a new production of Phantom opening soon after. Rumour seems to suggest that it will be a non-replica - the article explicitly says it won't be like London.

Looks like a new cast album is coming of the closing cast.
Phantom just shared a reel on Facebook of the Broadway cast in a recording study with the title "We have something special to share tomorrow..."
Doesn't seem to be just the title song like London received as John Riddle (Raoul) is in the video.

Wow. Why would they HYPE this up so much? I am holding out hope, because the Lord tweeted this morning that something would be revealed on Friday, retweeting the original tweet. Although, probably not, given the outfits are the same in the teaser video. Meh. |

Very curious what, if anything special will be done for the shows final public performance Saturday night. I’ll be at that one (sadly couldn’t get into the invite only FINAL Sunday show), but still hoping for some speeches and things for the fans of that performance.

I know Michael Crawford is going to be in the audience; his wife mentioned it on her Insta. ALW and Sarah Brightman were given ceremonial keys to the city of NY Friday. Here comes the hype. |

Or the fans. At last nights final public performance (the FINAL show today is invite only) we stood there for over 20 mins applauding and cheering and…nothing.

Was it genuine emergency cover? I had read that Crawford hasn't performed since the end of March. Reports seem to be that he's damaged his voice, had been missing a lot of shows, but that he really wants to perform for the final performance, so has taken unofficial time off to allow his voice to heal for tonight? |

Isn't it it noteworthy that a show that's begun with a Crawford playing the title role would also end with a Crawford playing the same role 35 years later?
