OMG, this thread has gone entirely out of control! :D I am already looking forward to danb 's report on how they kayaked their way from Paddington to Coal Drops Yard, then barely made it (in full mountain-climbing gear) halfway to the top of the ridiculously steep Upper Street, only stopping once for cake at the Ottoleghi to reboot their energy levels to help them cover those final few meters to the Almeida! |

I suppose there are people whose theatre experience just involve getting in and out of taxis right outside the building but really where is the fun in that?!

One of my favourite threads for a long time.
Will contact the Almeida to see if they have space for a jet pack, don’t really want to ascend from the Angel and traverse the wasteland that is upper street.
Never really thought about it, usually just enter Almeida into Citymapper if not sure and let it choose or if going direct from home will go to H&I from Kings Cross as prefer the relatively peaceful wasteland of Upper Street.

To be fair I usually walk from Marylebone…..through Regents Park to the canal and then all the way along until you can walk no further (you literally reach a tunnel where there is no tow path) and then it’s a short threadle through a few streets and you come out at the back of the Almeida theatre. Very pretty walk and beats the tube any day.
H & I definitely closer tube station of the two. Plus I get to walk past the town hall where my daughter got married!

The road connecting Angel tube and the theatre isn't called 'upper' street for nothing? Silly me, I always thought the street was called ‘New Labour Central,’ right up my street!!! |

So I am not the only one who enjoys walking to theatres (just got home from a nice walk to Donmar and back), or more or less everywhere I can if I am being honest. I also agree that the canal walk is beautiful! (The part from Coal Drops Yard to the end of the path is my "long way to Sainsbury's" route.) Completely off-topic: you have a better association to the Islington Town Hall, though! For me it's the memory of one of the rare concerts I ever went to where I was bored out of my mind. We went to see Haken, who were pretty unknown at the time, and my friend remembers it as the best concert she's ever been to. I literally sat on the floor after some 30-ish minutes because I just didn't enjoy it at all. (The only other time I remember being bored at a concert was when we went to a festival and saw Jared Leto's so-called band. I thought they were just terrible.) |

I walk if I can but as mentioned have a bad sense of direction and memory so if i'm on my own getting lost is highly likely (i managed to get lost going from donmar to charring cross once having done the journeys dozens of times before, I am an instinct for going the wrong way hence my of over sense of pride managing to walk to the royal court from waterloo the other week {and yes I managed to get lost then too coming back}).
I always expect the almeida to be about 2 roads earlier than it is and start to panic i've missed it though even for me it would be pretty hard to miss.

I don't think the Town Hall does concerts (although it does feature in the Culture Club video for "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me") - Islington Assembly Hall is the space next door that does concerts. I remember running round in panic before I missed my train stopping people who all appeared to be tourists/english not first language who couldn't assist. Ever since gave carefully noted shops on way up to steer by on way back. |

I always prefer to walk from Angel (the Oxfam shop has an excellent selection of books and music) than from H & I. But here's the strange thing; I always enjoy the walk on my way to the theatre but resent it totally on the way back!

Ever since gave carefully noted shops on way up to steer by on way back. Left at the Starbucks, straight on past the Costa, then turn right at the Pret - generic instructions applicable on any High Street in London. |
