From What's on stage
Gypsy to be presented in concert at Alexandra Palace with seven performers as Rose
Author Alex Wood 29 September 2021
Gypsy Exclusive: Iconic musical Gypsy, with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents, will be revived for one night only early next year.
Based on Gypsy Rose Lee's memoirs, the 1959 show sees a mother cajole her daughters into a life in showbusiness. It features numbers such as "Rose's Turn", "Let Me Entertain You" and "If Momma Was Married".
The one-off concert will feature seven individuals taking on the lead role of Rose, with the performers to be revealed tomorrow at midday!
The evening will see a 26-piece orchestra play the show's original orchestrations, conducted by Alex Parker. The piece is directed by Paul Foster with choreography by Joanna Goodwin and sound design by Paul Smith.
The concert will take place on 22 February 2022 (easy to remember, it's 22.2.22).

A mystery seven individuals.... are we certain Doc and Dopey have the pipes to pull this off? 😉🤣
Alex Parker certainly is a busy boy. Brace yourselves for ticket prices again.
My money says Mazz Murray and Ria Jones will be two of the Roses...

I cannot imagine anything worse than Ria Jones as Rose.
But pretty sure she will do this, she does everything else it seems.
Who else? Will be usual suspects that Alex Parker works with
Joanna riding Janie Dee Mazz Murray Tracie Bennett Louise Dearman

I wonder how they'll decide who gets which song.... Rose does have 7 songs (just about) but only 3 really big ones.

I cannot imagine anything worse than Ria Jones as Rose. She was very good in the REX production Christmas 2019. And I say that as someone who recognises her voice has “matured” in a very particular way, it worked to her advantage in Gypsy. You should consider hopping on a train and seeing something that hasn’t been conceived for the West End Mr B! You might find something you enjoy! 😀

I'm with Mr B on Ria Jones, she ruined the sunset Blvd tour for me. She may have originated the role in workshops but there was a reason she never played it. I don't mind her voice mostly but she's not a great actress.

She was considered to be good enough to understudy Glenn Close at the Coliseum and performed it for a week or so if I remember correctly, to largely positive feedback.

I'm pretty sure she played the lead on the recent sunset boulevard tour?

I'm confused. On the Alexandra Palace website Gypsy is on 21 - not 22 - February 2022. Also the Buy Tickets button leads to an Event Not Found message.
Maybe it's been loaded on the website with the wrong date ?
UPDATE This is now on sale. Date is Monday 21 February 2022. Top price is £84 which for me is acceptable and I've booked stalls row B.

2/7 guessed then 😂
Becky Lock not old enough but I guess ok for a concert, and I did wonder about Sam Spiro.
Just all feels a bit...expected (i know I wanted a couple of these women but I wondered if they'd go for some bigger/different names?)

That's another £84 I'll be keeping hold of then! I saw Caroline O'Connor as Rose in Leicester about a decade ago, so I'll stick with the memory of her 😁

I'd much rather see Tripplet and Spiro in an actual production

How many times do you need to tell us how much you dislike Ria Jones Mr Barnaby? It's now exceedingly dull - and spectacularly unimaginative. You don't like her, fine.

Don't be deceived by Rebecca Lock's youthful looks (though it would be good if she would tell us her secret!). It's 25 years since she made her west end debut as Bertrande in Martin Guerre. I believe that the she's actually older than Tyne Daly was when she played Rose the 1989 Broadway revival. I also think that's about the right age to play Rose. The real life Rose was in her early 20s when she had her daughters - and Louise became 'Gypsy' whilst still in her teens and was headlining Minsky's in New York before she was 20. So Rose being mid 40's by the end of the show would be factually correct. Merman was 51 when she created the role and Lansbury 48 when she played it in the original London production.

Will this be filmed? I imagine most things of this nature will be filmed from now on, so that there are plentiful productions ready to release if we ever go back into lockdown.
