I want to get the 3 CD boxset & book but Amazon are quoting £50.68. - seems a bit expensive to me. This remastered release should sound brilliant in whatever format I eventually get. It remains one of my most vivid memories of hearing an album after picking up the original vinyl box set in a charity shop and while I had seen the show and had later cast cd copies hearing the concept album for the first time from those first searing cords and the wealth of artists voices made it electrifying and I have high hopes for rediscovering the album having not heard it in full for some years. It must remain one of the most accomplished, audacious and bold musical releases ever and I can only imagine the shock it must have caused at the time. Despite several search attempts couldn't locate it on Amazon UK yet. Have a feeling they will be recommending some very religious choice for the next few months.

Also tempted by this.
They re-mastered the original 1970 album in 2012, at the time of the Ben Forster arena tour though. (Which I bought). Will re-mastering it again really make any difference?
Personally I'd love to see a re-mastered/packaged 1996 Lyceum version with pics from show/spiel from creatives. Or finally a release of the Open Air version - that's never gonna happen though!

Music/Sound equipment hasn't evolved that dramatically since 2012, so unless you are playing on a super expensive player, or have amazing hearing, i can't imagine the new 're-mastered' version being that different.
In my dreams, I'd like a Pro Shot of the 1996 Lyceum production and a recording of the Open Air Theatre production with Ricardo Alfonso.

That's where I saw the price.

I often preorder , then cancel when I've found it cheaper somewhere else.

Just dug out the 2012 release of the 1970 version - spiel from ALW in notes saying it's been extensively remastered and restored. As such I fully agree with you - can't see how another re-master 8 years later will make any discernible difference. In fact I wonder if marketing team think people have forgotten about the 2012 release and they are just releasing that recording again with new packaging/inlays/interviews/pics etc. We'll see. Yes while I know the 1970 version is sacred to many, I much prefer the 1996 recording and I would also love to re-live this on DVD/BluRay. Ditto the Open Air - loved all the casts of this, but yes, Ricardo was next level as Judas.

The 1996 Lyceum recording is my go to, for JCS. The originql and film soundtrack are ok, but both Steve Balsamo and Zubin Varla are amazing. It probably helps that it was my first time seeing the show onstage.

The standard 2-disc version is £10.99. With the best will in the world, I can't see a handful of demos and alternate versions, an interview, and whatever they've put in the book adding £40-worth of value. Here's the remastered version of the title song, if you want to compare against the original or the previous remaster:
To be honest, I prefer the original 1970 mix. (I haven't heard the 2012 version.)

Did anyone pick this updated version up. The box set is now around £45 still bit steep for the book and 3rd disc extras but online reviews seem to say it's a good set
