I was so disappointed by this. I (personally) didn't feel it was a patch on the Sam Mendes and Rufus Norris productions. With one or two fleeting exceptions, I (again, personal opinion) got no real sense of the foreboding of the times and, ultimately, didn't much care about - or was interested in - any of them (Fraulein Schneider, aside). And, I know this is sacrilege in some eyes, but I thought ER's Emcee was just one dimensional. At the end of one of those earlier productions (the Norris, I think) I recall the audience being stunned by the final scene. All I thought at the end of this was "can I get to Charing Cross for the 10.34".
On the plus-side, how lovely to see a packed theatre and people enjoying live entertainment provided by such talented people. The fault here, for me, lies in the direction.

if anyone is looking for a last minute return, this afternoon will be your chance, as long as you don't mind missing Jesse Buckley

I'd love to see Emily! She's fantastic. I hope the audience appreciates how lucky they are to see her.

Adding my voice to the Emily fanclub. If I was in London today, I'd grab a return to see her.

Lots of covers on today! If anyone is there please let me know how Christopher Tendai was as Cliff and Sally Frith was as Fraulein Kost! So pleased for Sally Frith. She was excellent in the Legally Blond tour.

Finally saw Cabaret a few nights ago, nothing much to add to the positive comments apart from saying the queue for the ladies toilets was the worst I have ever seen.

Finally saw Cabaret a few nights ago, nothing much to add to the positive comments apart from saying the queue for the ladies toilets was the worst I have ever seen. Was this down in the basement? I noticed that (at least pre-show) the queue for the ladies downstairs was 30 people long, but when I wandered in search of weird performances to the upper levels the toilets had no queue at all.

The preshow entertainment did seem to wander around but were mainly basement and stalls bar based may change as covid rules adapt but were very much when I saw it there to be seen and watched with zero interaction with crowd. But follow Andrews example and do wander around before or on the extended interval it's interesting to see the different but all very good views of the staging this set up provides

I mean if they had staged strange little performances in the bathrooms I would not have been mad. Now I think about it, maybe I'm slightly disappointed that there wasn't a scantily clad drama graduate gyrating around the mens with an accordion.

I’d imagine we’d have to get a replacement casting update soon, right?

I’d imagine we’d have to get a replacement casting update soon, right? Alan Cumming If true, he'd only be in it April to July at most given he's doing that EIF show

5 stars. I'd probably give it 10 if the poll allowed! Simply exceptional.
Jessie Buckley is a star, and in this proves that she is one of the finest actresses of her generation. It's an acting performance, not a singing one (though she does hit some gorgeous notes that remind you just how well she can sing), and all the better for it. Maybe This Time is breathtaking in its simplicity (it's all just her at her finest) and the title number is a tour de force in the best possible way . I didn't think it was over-wrought at all, it fitted perfectly with her Sally. I can't get it out of my mind. If she doesn't win the Olivier then it will be a joke (and yes, I did see Sutton Foster so I am making a direct comparison).
Eddie Redmayne is fantastic, it felt to me like he was walking a tightrope the whole time in terms of the character's mental state and it just works. And there are a couple of moments in particular orchestrated by the Emcee which are horrifyingly effective and Redmayne plays them perfectly.
Anna-Jane Casey and Liza Sadovy should be battling for the Supporting Actress Olivier, as they are both exceptional. Casey looks, acts and dances like a woman half her age and she is devastating in the Act 1 finale.
The ending doesn't quite have the impact of the 2008 tour version but it comes close and it works.
The club is hugely atmospheric and the stalls seats are great. I was in Row E and it was a perfect view. Most of the numbers are staged to both sides but a couple felt more directed towards the opposite side whereas we got most of the title number. Minimal props and not a single chair in sight, but nothing else was needed. It's a great example of minimalist staging done well.
The theatre itself is stunning, though the foyer gets far too crowded in the pre-show. Sitting in the club itself is just as entertaining though so it doesn't matter once you've managed to push through to whichever bar you want. I wandered upstairs before the show and the Dress Circle toilets had no queue. Very different story at the interval but it moved quickly and seemed a better option than the stalls.
I'm intrigued to see who is following Redmayne and Buckley, as I'd definitely like to go back.

I’d imagine we’d have to get a replacement casting update soon, right? Alan Cumming I must be in a very small minority who never liked his performance as the Emcee. But I didn't really like Mendes's production. I thought this one was far superior all round.

Casey looks, acts and dances like a woman half her age I remember saying the same thing after seeing her in Annie Get Your Gun 5 years ago. She looked about 20, despite being over 40. I don't know how she does it!

Small question about seeing this - it says that you need to have a vaccination pass AND a negative test. Can proof of a negative test be just bringing the actual lateral flow test with you? Like one you've done at home and brought in?

They wanted to NHS confirmation text or email when we attended the first preview - there's no way to show when the LFT is from just by bringing the test, but you get a date on the NHS confirmation

Like one you've done at home and brought in? They only asked for the test result on Saturday but it had to be the NHS text or email. It takes 30 seconds to report the result to get the text/email.
