As much as Glenn is 'my' Norma, if it doesn't happen this year, they will need to cast someone else, before she really is too old to play it. If it rolls into 2022, give it to the next generation - Zeta-Jones, Zellweger, Pfeiffer, Kidman.
Joe and Betty's casting then depends on the age of whichever Norma they get.

Anne Hathaway for Betty Schaefer and perhaps Darren Criss or Joe Jonas as Joe? Or if they want Joe a bit older, Eddie Redmayne or Aaron Tveit? Goodness no to any of them. There is no song Anne can cry her way through without actually singing. DC or JJ or way to young. Just because he was in LM does not make Eddie a Joe. AT meh and no movie or tv profile. A very hard role because none of them will sell a movie.

Jake, Zac or Chris Pine would be good Joes. I think Matt Bomer can sing as well. Jeremy Jordan would also be sublime but no one outside of us lot has heard of him!
And I keep coming back to Anna Kendrick for Betty.

And I keep coming back to Anna Kendrick for Betty. Funnily enough some of my non musical interested mates know him from some American TV show (Super Girl?). Anyway, he does have a fantastic voice. Think he's a bit too alpha male for Joe. Although on stage they have gone with that many times (Barrowman/Alan Campbell etc). I see Joe more in the way Kevin Anderson did it. Quiet, brooding, easily led, smouldering, understated.....

I love how it's just a given that Glenn Close 'is' Norma, when there are plenty of qualified actresses out there who could easily do it and possibly sing it better. Nothing against Glenn Close. I mean, it get it, she's a name, but it's just an observation. You know, if this does go ahead, this would be a big production and maybe, just maybe, this might be the final push to finally get the movie version of Wicked off and rolling. By that stage we would have had In The Heights, then Sunset and the ball may start rolling for other movie musicals? I am firmly in the anyone-but-Glenn camp. She is SO attached to this though (it's her pushing ALW to make it; she does seem to be the driving force) I honestly don't think it will be made unless it's her. Well, unless another 10 years pass which isn't inconceivable.

I think I’m on my own when it comes to not being enamoured with the recent Close production when I saw it in London.
I watched a video of her on YouTube from the Broadway run the other day and her voice was terrible. I went back to the first time I heard her as Norma in that birthday concert and she sounded much better. However, on closer listening it was a very carefully vocally staged arrangement.
Give it to Zeta-Jones, I think she’s underrated, I think she has the vocal chops but also those eyes for Norma would be great.
I normally want older actresses cast in shows but a major point of Sunset is Norma’s thrown on the scrap heap young. Patti however will never be too old for Norma for me.
I just want that Lu Pone, Merman belt.
I know it’s a great acting role but I think it needs a power vocal.
And whoever said Cher I would pay to see her chew the scenery up and I would pay hundredssssss.
I also think Midler, even though I didn’t like her Dolly, would have been a great Norma.

Quiet, brooding, easily led..... Ah yes, I forgot he was in Supergirl. And Smash of course. I reckon Jeremy could do quiet and brooding. He loves a cardigan, after all. And as for easily led...well, don't tempt me 😂 he's too young to play opposite Glenn though. We're gonna need a hot guy in his 40s. Which brings us back to the Jake/Bradley Cooper/James Marsden type. All of whom I would happily spend 2 hours with.

Definitely not on your own, I am passionately in this camp. I found Close very weak and for me personally, all the acting in the world couldn't make up for the painful vocal. I also totally see Norma as a power vocal role. CZJ would be my top (realistic) choice. One of the few Hollywood names who can sing and act! Patti will indeed never be too old and is iconic (she IS Norma for me, 1993 at the Adelphi was incredible) though it would be a cold day in hell before her and ALW ever worked together again. Cher is an interesting one and also I think would inject something new and different so is also a great shout :-)

I would say that Norma can't just be a power belter though, she needs a fragility and vulnerability to her, like she could just shatter any moment even though she thinks she's a force of nature. So that's where Glenn works for me, you can hear the cracks (yes, weak singing compared to other Broadway stars, and normally I'm a fan of vocals above all else, but for some reason Glenn's Norma just 'works' for me).

Without Glenn Close attached to it, it will never get made. Its as simple as that.

Looking at old videos I saw Diahann Carroll, what would people think of Kerry Washington?
Idina Menzel is 50 next month and would be a household name? Would she?

Don't think either of them are big enough names. If we aren't going Glenn, and it would somehow still happen without her, I vote Zeta-Jones. She feels the most natural fit.

Completely agree on Zeta-Jones she would be great. Does she not get offers or is she just selective? Loved her since Darling Buds of May days.

I get the vibe she's very selective with what she does (and being married to Michael Douglas AND having an Oscar for one of the most successful movie musicals of all time means you haven't got to work much)
Zeta-Jones and Kidman would be my vote for Phyllis and Sally in Dominic Cooke's follies movie (not trying to derail the thread!)

Hugh Jackman would have been right 10-15 years ago but is now too old. Neil Patrick Harris?

I just thought of someone who is box office, good actor, age appropriate and can sing. Jake Gyllenhall.

Im mystified as to why so many think she’d be a good choice. It’s nearly 20 years since Chicago. Yes she was great in it but she’s done nothing of note since. She’s not box office, and I suspect that’s the reason why she’s selling coffee and her own line of homewares tat on QVC.

That Chicago performance is so burned into my memory! She was also fabulous in A Little Night Music on Broadway as Desirée. But that was 10 years or so ago now too. I think she certainly has the look and ability. To me, she's much more appropriate casting than 74 year old Glenn Close at this stage...
